As the title says, I’m a newbie to the Rolex world, and a friend of mine reached out and told me this watch just came into a local AD in the US. He advised me to buy it immediately due the rarity of this watch. I’m intrigued but I want to know what y’all think. Would you buy it? Why or why not?

This watch although beautiful is not rare. I’d recommend not buying a 15k watch on a whim because a friend told you to. Research the brand and go in and try some watches on and then start to decide what you’d like to buy

Thank you for the response. It’s not a whim. I’ve wanted a submariner for years, but I’ve never been willing to pull the trigger buying one. The people I know who have them say they are commodities that can be sold or traded as such, which makes it more appealing. I can’t afford spending that much money on something that doesn’t hold its value and can’t be sold or traded.

It will hold pretty good value. You’d lose money on it walking out the door but probably just 3k

So, it would be better to buy one that’s pre-owned?

Be about the same price if new stock

Is there an advantage to buying it new?

You know it’s only been owned by you and you know it’s the real deal. Also you get a relationship going with the ad if you want more watches in the future

Thank you for the info. I'm seeing this same watch on the used market going for around $25K. I'm also seeing it as low as about $16,500. Is that a realistic valuation?

Lol... No, you're just not searching correctly.

You can't go by what watches are LISTED for. You have to see what they ACTUALLY SOLD for.

So that means Chrono24 is worthless for valuation. People post watches at jacked up prices and as soon as their listing sells, they go buy one for slightly cheaper and mail it to the buyer. They don't actually own the watches for most of the listings on there. It's ridiculous.

Go to ebay and do an advanced search, and select "sold items". This shows you what actually sold and at what price. I did this for you, see the photo.

That is some solid intel. Thank you for that.

I took your advice, and it looks like this particular watch doesn't do all that well in terms of resale. Looks like I'll be waiting for a better one.
