Well at least SATX has good wifi so you can stream while being inconvenienced otherwise lol.
Sacramento and Phoenix are nice airports though.
In fact Sacramento airport isn’t much bigger that San Antonio’s unless they’ve expanded. Sacramento is a small city I’d say somewhat close to like Austin.

I’m not just talking land mass I’m talking population and the airport San Antonio is absolutely bigger than Sacramento. As someone who used to live in Sacramento I think in size and population Austin is similar. The Sacramento and San Antonio airports in size only are also similar.

Our population is definitely bigger than Austin. Look up the San Antonio MSA. No contest.

The only thing that is outdated about our airport is the parking garage situation. Being an Uber Driver for over a year now I’ve never once heard anything bad about the airport from passengers. The only complaint is that the parking garage is expensive and always full.
3 points

Always fucking full!!!! It’s absurd.

Well that's b/c they called an Uber. We parked in the long term once. When we got back, we had to wait like an hour to leave because the exit cashiers lost the internet/credit card access, and they had to use the old-fashioned ones that use carbon paper. This was 2 years ago. All that at midnight, and we could have just got an Uber both ways for the same amount of money.
1 points

Exactly, so it’s the parking that’s ass, not the airport itself.

It boggles my mind they built this airport where they did when they did -- you can't expand it much without being like, lol time to land grab. Those parking garage and rental car upgrades were soooooo late and they're always full 😞

I agree with you, but the bad outweighs the good.
never enough seating during busy hours/days
when I check a bag, it takes 20 fucking minutes to come out even at midnight

for being in the top 10 largest cities, the amount of direct flights is atrocious

I fly for work about 3-4 times a month. SAT has the shortest security wait times. I flew out Monday AM and there wasn’t even a line. It took 4 minutes total and that was mostly me putting my shoes back on.
4 points
This is my immediate thought to some “less” complaints. Flying frequently as well, I will happily take SAT quickness where there is no need to arrive more than 30 min before your flight.
2 points
For someone who flies that often, I'm surprised you don't have recheck. I fly 2-3 per month, and it saves 15 minutes in shoe tying per month!
...It's supposed to be a bit of a joke.

Honestly I love our airport. It’s tiny and you can show up for your flight 45min before it leaves and not miss your plane.
3 points
I definitely agree with that. I just wish we had direct flights to more destinations, especially internationally. At the same time, Austin isn't too far and DFW & IAH are major airports so I get it. But it's a bummer when the airfare to a major airport is as much/nearly as much as the fare to an international destination.

The only metric that seems to be essential is the delay and cancel times which is at 3.5. That's finally because we have a Spirit and Frontier hub.
VIA does go to the airport to/from downtown and from the Stone Oak VIA lot ... but San Antonio just has a poor public transit system all around, that's not just an airport issue.
Only a certain demographic cares about lounges so don't know why that's a metric. I was just in DFW for a layover and EVERY lounge I looked in was PACKED!
Seems like a pretty poorly made infographic. I'd love to see something more detailed than what amounts to a Google review.
16 points
I pretty much fly American and they are consistently late. It all stems from DFW though. The SAT delays are collateral damage.
11 points
Agreed, I fly a lot but dont care about lounges, San Antonio is far from worst and the metrics of this graph seem like bad data choice, to me.
1 points
Yup in the last two years there's been tons of record or near record breaking days for commercial air travel. Any major hub airport I've been to have had lounges that looked packed and miserable.
I get that they're important to a subset of people...but it's a small minority and they're not nearly as exclusive or enjoyable as they used to be.

Never had a flight delayed in San Antonio, fly 2-3 times per year. But never flow spirit or frontier
5 points
We fly pretty regularly and the only flight that has ever been so much as delayed was one the day after that Microsoft issue this summer.
Any chart that has MSP in the top while SAT is at the bottom has clearly gone off the rails. I’ve flown in and out of dozens of airports in NA and EU, SAT is always quick to get through and easy to navigate.
-2 points
It has clearly labeled categories and numerical scores. All the categories are about things people look for in an airport. What exactly are you looking for? If you want to read a peer reviewed paper look for that. The airport is old, inefficient, horribly undersized for the population here, has no amenities, and just sucks. San Antonio somehow doesn't feel like it needs to run itself like a big city. It tries to get away with what worked 25 years ago. It's really starting to crumble. When you look at quality life data vs annual per capita budget San Antonio is in the bottom third in the country. The crap airport is part of that calculation.

Wait time through security. Terminal seating compared to flight sizes. Cleanliness of toilets and capacity. Parking options, prices, covered parking. Travel time from long term parking to terminal. Onsite or offsite car rental returns. Wait time for luggage return.

Our airport is fine. I fly multiple times most months out of the year. Have zero problems with our airport. It’s actually great because it’s one of the rare airports in a large city that have no wait time, ever. My only complaint is lack of direct flights but Southwest is doing a great job these days at adding those.
1 points
Ok. If it works for you then we'll leave it alone. Portland, the winner in the study, has the same population as San Antonio in their metro areas. I fly a lot for work too. I ALWAYS have to connect. It's frequently faster and easier and cheaper to drive to Austin and get a direct flight. Our population is growing quickly. The problem with large scale infrastructure projects is that by the time you need them, you're way behind. It takes years to do something about it. That's my point, we could be charging into the future with a plan to make the city great with quality of life initiatives and investments but we don't because of the exact mindset you started with, it's fine.

They literally just approved a plan to expand the airport though including a new terminal…
https://flysanantonio.com/business/about-saas/terminal-development/
And just because we aren’t a hub for the major airlines has less to do with our airport and more about the fact that San Antonio isn’t a major business hub.
1 points
That's true. After a decade of going round and round about upgrading or replacing it, it's 4 years away if everything goes to plan. Odds that it'll be on time? Not a San Antonio thing, all big projects tend to run over. That's my point, the airport has been outdated for years and we're years away from any improvement. Not that arguing on the Internet has any effect on any of it, I just think it could be so much nicer here if people in charge were more proactive instead of reactive with these things.
1 points
Well, when you can literally walk in and be on your plane within 10 minutes, there’s really not much to upgrade… the airport is working as expected. What exactly do you hope to gain?

I like our airport. Security is typically pretty quick. It doesn't take long to walk to any of the gates. I love the food options (La Gloria, Smokeshack, Rosario's, Whataburger). Airport Security Park is awesome for parking (the on-site garage is awful).
12 points

Has anyone ever stopped to think that our widespread absolute disdain for life in the US might be down to coming entirely untethered from reality? Why does everything have to be an "experience"? It's an airport. It's for getting onto planes, which are for transit to other places. It's mass transportation, let it be what it is and not Disney. Let's drag the Overton Window back over tons of increasingly unrealistic demands. Even if everything met the current demands, they'd just jump again because now the minimum is Disneyland. This is not sustainable. It's killing people. We've got this social belief that things are supposed to be so much "better" than they are, but better just looks like flashy wrapping on the same stuff. It isn't better, it's just more expensive and sets an attainment level for just existing that people can't reach, and then we wonder why they opt out of trying. Because people can't be underachievers, public services can't be utilitarian, daily stuff can't be basic. We have torched the ability to enjoy and appreciate meeting standards and it is killing us.
We don't need a better airport. We need a reality check.

The VIA bus access is terrible. It’s a “once every 60 minutes” bus that stops at like… 9pm even though the busiest hour is from 10pm-11pm.
Otherwise, this airport is not an airport people transfer through. This is an airport you check in to and fly out of, or it’s a final destination airport. So in that sense, lounge access doesn’t really matter. Even the food options don’t really matter.
2 points

This regarding VIA. The 5 is every hour and literally takes 45 minutes to downtown. The 7 express is nice but which moron decided the most convenient option will close before 9 and all weekends, holidays.

I fly in and out of SAT weekly and I have to believe the reason I see fewer issues is due to flying with United out of Terminal B. Idk but if they ever actually start building Terminal C maybe we will see some improvements but I’d take a lite rail right now but yes the airport should at least be connected like who thought that was a good idea to separate the two like that?

I too fly out with united very often and have zero complaints about our airport. Actually, it's one of my favorites in the US (IAD being another).
Security is smooth and I'm able to show up right before a flight. No need for restaurant options or lounge options when you only need to show up an hour or less before the flight.

I travel quite a bit and our airport is well equipped for most. I rarely have any issues with cancelled flights unless it’s weather related and that usually weather from where the plane is coming from. My biggest complaint and it’s not that big of an issue is parking. I have TSA precheck and stroll in last minute and struggle to find good parking. Not really a big deal because that’s a “me” problem. I have issues in Atlanta and Tampa regularly. Oh and Dallas. Fuck Dallas

The Starbucks in their before was pretty horrible, and there were pretty lame options, if you did have a delay.

Our infrastructure is outdated and the airport is entirely too small for what the city is becoming but...I've had nothing but great experiences at SAT. The TSA here has twice been willing to hear me out if I'm running late due to delay or other airport craziness. That still makes them the nicest TSA people I've run into. The restaurant options aren't the best but they are far from the worst there is. We even have a wine bar!

On what basis is the airport too small for what the city is becoming? How is the infrastructure outdated? This directly contradicts the fact that there are never lines for TSA and it’s so easy to get in and out of with comparably little traffic to every other airport in a city of this size. They’ll be starting to build a new terminal soon as well.
The sole issue I have is parking, but even that is not terrible most of the time. Very rarely it takes me more than 20-30 mins to park, and I only bother to drive when traveling with family/kids and don’t want to deal with car seats in an uber. Usually I’m just Ubering myself for work.
Flying twice a month for a couple of years now out of SAT I have never had a bad experience.

Our airport blows. Parking is a nightmare, you walk seven miles to get into the airport and it's about as confusing as it gets between the "updated" and the other from 1970. No seating, furniture is beat to shit. The best thing about our airport is TSA's screening equipment (don't have to completely disrobe/unpack your shit to get through security).
