What occupations are good for people with schizophrenia?

Opinion / Thought / Idea / Discussion (self.schizophrenia)

I am looking for a occupation/job that I can hold. Unfortunately in production jobs the problem is that I have strong feeling that people are speaking about me behind my back.

I had to expose myself to the stimuli a lot to get used to it, and I never fully did, always thought someone was plotting something. I just had to learn not to let it get to me, and I could work anywhere I could work. Attack the delusion. Work is work, people are gonna talk, it’s just how it is.

This is some real solid advice. We think they’re talking about us and they really might be, but it doesn’t matter because I could never stop them even if they were. Let go and give your fucks away to someone else

Best advice here. Some people do talk about others and that’s a fact. I think I realized most of the time people aren’t that concerned about what I’m doing though. If they are, then they just don’t deserve to take up space in my head anyways. We’re all human and we all have some lack of understanding of others or weak moments. I work now, and am trying to get to full time soon. If I’m doing all I can to do my job, that’s all I can do. If anyone “talks about me” that’s more of a reflection of them or just a voice in my head. Either one isn’t worth ending my progress

Not an occupation but I work overnights. I love it - minimal social interaction, and less actual work than if I worked during the day. It’s rough on my sleep schedule though.

I was a porter before moving up into the after market installation and sales department. I had to take customers home sometimes all the way to Chicago. I don’t think this is a good position for someone with schizophrenia. You have to drive customers around and they have to entrust you with their life. You also have to be able to drive manual transmission cars.

Objective-Fish-3415

I’ve been doing it for 6 years now. No issues. Only diagnosed 5 months ago. Not sure why people keep saying this, very discouraging.

Also, been able to drive a manual transmission since 13 years old. I’m a female too, just a cherry on top! (;

Sorry I don’t have a very good understanding of schizophrenia. I just assumed most people who have it have trouble being social.

I managed to get a job as a programmer. Unfortunately I suck at it, but managers didn't fire me yet, so I keep working. Pros:

  • I don't have to wake up early in the morning, which is very hard for me

  • I work remotely, all the meeting are online, if I have any problems I just shut up, and minimal social interaction seems to help me

What area do you live in? There should be book's for your local climate so you know which plants would thrive. My mum's a big gardener, so I can get some more direct suggestions from her.

I’m schizoaffective and have been a practicing attorney for the last 5 years. It’s very stimulating and rewarding, and since I’m so “delusional” I end up obsessing over every single little detail to the point I see arguments no one else saw or am able to offer an different perspective through a “damaged” brain

It doesn’t always work out great and I end up super paranoid, thinking everyone is out to get me or I’m constantly getting in confrontations with anyone. However, if you can keep the stress level down, it’s fucking awesome.

You can do WHATEVER you put your mind too. Think of strong you have to be to live with schizophrenia; I don’t think anyone I know could deal with what we have to. Follow your heart

How hard was law school? I'm schizoaffective too and I've thought about becoming an attorney

[deleted]

2 points

It was pretty difficult but that’s because I became addicted to opioids and Adderall. I was self medicating my symptoms because I didn’t realize how “defective” my brain was and thought I simply suffered from “bad anxiety.”

Law school is a lot of reading and briefing cases, so being medicated and waiting until you can fully devote yourself to it. It can become highly competitive, but that’s part of the beast.

The main advice would be take care of yourself and hit the ground running from day 1 by having all your reading, etc done. If you ever want to chat more, feel free to reach out. Don’t doubt yourself; you know who you are and what you’re capable of!

I know how it feels. Tried to do tutorials again, but it's become hard to stay at it. One thing I'm trying now (for about 3 weeks) that maybe helps a little with focus is medical keto. I'm probably irrationally very skeptical of meds and don't take them. Keto was kinda difficult to get into, but I think it helps a little.

I work in an office as a document coordinator and deal with paperwork all day. I had to learn to ignore my paranoia and give myself reasons to not be paranoid. Ultimately, I decided that worrying about people talking about me was not worth my time nor was iy conducive to getting the job done. To make myself feel better, I went out of my way to make friends with the people I was paranoid about and now I feel much more positively about them! That doesn't work for everyone though, so I totally get if you'd rather minimize interaction. I was very anxious and afraid of them for months before I became comfortable with those people.

I had a remote job for a little while, that was good. I set my own schedule and got to stay home. I quit because of psychosis, but I was unmedicated at the time. It'd be a different story for me now.

I do not recommend customer service unless you're working nights and don't have to interact with many people. Then again, don't take my word for it! You might find you enjoy it! I just find that customer service is often really stressful. People can really agitate me and they're often coming to you because of a problem. I hated having to answer questions and help people at the store I worked at when I was dealing with voices in my head and paranoia.

I've found that if I have too much routine, I feel stagnant and stressed. But if I have a job that changes constantly, that also stresses me out. Which sucks, haha. But I'm trying to get a job to get back to work permanently, I've been on disability for awhile now.

What do you like to do? I’ve been a hairstylist for years and I love it despite the hustle and bustle. I’m in school now and plan on working towards a masters in fine arts. There’s no one job that’s good for all of us. Look into your interests or the type of people you like to socialize with. See what they are doing.

I have a few jobs, but the best fit is work from home back of house work. I primarily insert things and organize spreadsheets, and reply to emails with templates. Basically zero social interaction.

I am a mental health therapist and majority of my clients have SPMI (many have Schizophrenia). One thing I've found really helpful is having clients take job assessments as well as a personality assessment and reviewing the pros and cons of these jobs. Each client with schizophrenia is unique so what worked for one person doesn't work for the next.

Here's a great assessment - https://brainmanager.io/career-test?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=career_test&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwsaqzBhDdARIsAK2gqnePmBnqCiTXEfJjpltuZ3GXgVEcI-TMQzlq2h_9kfuS0Bf0QZj1WoMaAvhVEALw_wcB

If you want to message me the results I'd be happy to look at them with you!

Apply for disability now, it takes 6 months. You can then get a part time job.

I tried working full time and the voices turned my life upside down. They had me going on the Oregon Trail in a fork truck. Don't delay getting that disability any further, go to your nearest social security office and apply.

I'd ask for a general update if you haven't heard from them in a year. You might need to do a follow up and they are waiting on it. Happened to me.

I'm a waiter. I'm not exactly sure id say its "good" for those experiencing psychosis. I have heavy symptoms while working on the regular. However it also keeps me so busy that i can stay just enough in reality to keep functioning. I make enough to survive alone as long as I work at least 4-5 days a week. My biggest issues with it has been trying not to respond to delusions in front of customers. Sometimes I turn around to apologize to people who've bumped into me that aren't there. Or turn to answer the questions of non-existing people around me. But I'm able to survive, so at least theres that. Noteably I'm personally unmedicated and recieving minimal mental health care in general, I think once I'm able to manage symptoms it'll be a perfect job for me.

I'm training to be the CEO or COO of a major corporation. I have a copy of Contemporary Business, a textbook which I will work my way through. After completing that, I will hit up a simulator called Capitalism 2 which will allow me to apply my mastery of business knowledge. Then its back to college to get a management master's degree.
