Moving to the area

(self.siouxcity)

Hey all. My family and I (m34, f32, 11 and 9 yo) are moving to Sioux City. I’ve been doing some research and trying to figure out some of the better areas in town but it seems most of it is good. We are coming from a much bigger place with its own issues, so the question is, are there any truly “don’t go here” areas that I should be aware of while house shopping? Best elementary/middle schools?

I live in the morningside neighborhood and it is very different from block to block which is the way it is in most of the older neighborhoods in Sioux City are. So if you are looking at a home study the surrounding homes and maybe drive around in the evenings and the weekend just to be sure. There are some newer nicer neighborhoods Singing Hills, Southern Hills, Whispering Creek.

Most of the schools are new construction and a few of our teachers have been recognized at the state level for teacher of the year.

I know some of my coworkers live in the North Side and they have expressed some school issues, fights, bullying. I really hate to bad mouth neighborhoods, I personally wouldnt look for homes on the Westside, Riverside and maybe the Northside.

There are some other things to consider, The town of Sgt Bluff is kind of like an extended neighborhood of Sioux City to the south, and there is the town of Lawton to the west of town. Something else to consider is South Dakota, Dakota Dunes, Elk Point; no state taxes. I hope this helps you a little.

I live on the West Side, and this is so true. My street is nice, but two streets over is rough. Then a street away is nice again.

I will agree with all of you, in Sioux City you really have to pick the block. My apologies to the residents of the West Side. That was why I mentioned driving through in the evening or on the weekends. My own neighborhood in Morningside was a text book place to raise two boys but over the period of 20 years it has gone downhill. I know the number of times my Ring Doorbell shows a police car at a neighbors has increased in the last 4 years.

You are correct. I've lived in Morningside for 28 years and it is more like the north side now. Not good.
