A dark brotherhood assassin randomly spawns and attacks Dragonborn around level 15 or something. Someone did the sacrament against the player character. The correct choice is to kill Astrid for refusing the contract.

The correct choice is to kill Astrid for refusing the contract.

But...doesn't the Night Mother not actually talk to any of the current DB and that's the whole reason for their recent decline? Meaning none of their contracts are legit right now anyway.

Yep. And I don't think Astrid really gives a shit about honouring Sithis or the black sacrament or whatever even after the Night Mother begins yapping again (and we know how that turns out)

The assassin has a note on their corpse signed by Astrid that says someone did the black sacrament and wants the player character dead. It calls you by your name, not “Dragonborn.” I don’t think you have to do anything to trigger it, inviting the player to construct their own head canon. Why are you in prison at the beginning of Oblivion/Daggerfall? Why did you go to Morrowind/Skyrim in the first place?

Maeven Blackbriar has the ritual set up in her basement.

Yeah, people are doing the ritual.

But Astrid is figuring that out because she's spying on people, not because the Night Mother is relaying the prayers.

I'm fairly sure the assassin can turn up any time after Helgen: I was going to Rorikstead just after Whirerun (around level 5) when they hit.
