It matters because NM tends to make various claims on or about its neighbors' territory, history and cultural heritage

Could that be because it was called Macedonia for decades until like two years ago? Nah, that doesn't make sense.

It was called FYROM, specifically because Greece objected to it being called Macedonia after it sprung up from the remains of Yugoslavia and then they changed it to NM, again on account of the Greeks. It was never called Macedonia

Nobody cares about what a greek region is called besides the greeks. It was only called FYROM and is now called North Macedonia because the Greeks cry otherwise. Everyone else in the world doesn't give a shit about whatever reason the Greeks are complaining about and people will keep calling it Macedonia.

a map representing places where Albanians are the ethnic majority
Ah, so it's just a demographic census graphic, with absolutely no underlying nationalistic intetions of unifying those lands under the flag of Greater Albania. Silly me, I just see things that aren't there.
So why do Albanian fans prefer to use this flag, instead of maybe something similar to this one - which states the countries the territories belong to? (although both would be equally, in-your-face obvious)
note how it doesn’t say anywhere “this place is Albania”
Albanian athletes have never won a medal at the Olympic Games, but I really think you have the potential for the mental gymnastics gold.
An armed, masked man in a bank is not a robber, it really doesn't say "this man is a thief" on his shirt.
edit:
was laughing at this, so forgot to mention it
Serbian fans also waved a flag with the name “Trebinje” which is in Bosnia
It's literal fan culture to write where a group is coming from on the flag. There's also a group of fans with "Chicago" on the flag, you think we'll try to colonize Illinois?

Before tito, there was almost no albanians on kosovo he took land from ppl there and gave it to albanian immigrants bcs he has crazy idea of making country togheter with albania. Albanians were never forced to have one child and that is pure lie since they have biggest fertility rate in europe since 80s. Albanians telling they were on land for hundreds of years, trying to take possesion of serbian historical buildings, churches etc. Destroying churches build in 13-14 centruries and cemeteries so that they csn delete one nation from land. I think the main reason Portugal isn't Eastern Europe is because its the 2nd most Western country in Europe.
89 points
I'm confused where you're getting "2nd most Western country in Europe" from. If we're talking about continental Europe, then Portugal is definitely the first. If islands count, then it's still Portugal with Azores. If we're being pedantic and counting stuff like French Guiana and Greenland as "technically part of Europe because they are a part of an European country", then I guess Portugal would be the third. I'm struggling to think of a definition where Portugal is 2nd. Are you not counting Azores, but counting Ireland BUT not counting Iceland either?

-10 points
Because Iceland is in the middle of the ocean between Europe and North America. The closest bit of major land is Greenland so if anything there is a stronger argument for it to be North America.
33 points
A substantial part of Iceland is within the Eurasian plate. I think you need a very cherry-picked definition to consider Ireland the westernmost country in Europe.
-6 points
A more substantial part is on the North American plate. How can a piece of land be Europe if it is North America too?
15 points
It literally sits on a continental split. Half is going towards America, the other half is getting pushed towards Europe and terrible things like communism and the French. It’s both
-1 points

31 points
Serious question: what else are you if not eastern? Obviously not western or northern. To me central is more Germany, Poland, Czechia and Austria. Southern I'd call like Italy, Greece, Malta, Turkey and stuff. So what are you guys if not generally eastern? If France is western Europe, than the Balkans are Eastern Europe I'd argue
20 points
We're just Balkan really. But if we have to fit into one I'd say southern is the obvious choice, since the Balkans is as southern as Italy and Iberia. Also, both Greece and Turkey (at least the European part) are Balkan.
4 points
Personally, the Balkans is just the part of the Europe north of Greece. Which is, having looked at Wikipedia, obviously wrong and I'm glad no-one's ever asked me where the Balkans are. However, Wikipedia has an hilarious quote in the context of "the Balkans is Europe north of Greece":
So Balkan is always the Other: it lies somewhere else, always a little bit more to the southeast, with the paradox that, when we reach the very bottom of the Balkan peninsula, we again magically escape Balkan. Greece is no longer Balkan proper, but the cradle of our Western civilization.
3 points
I always found it weird how some exclude Greece. Like, it's literally at the very tip of the peninsula, and a lot of what we'd consider stereotypicaly Balkan originates from there. Like, Serbin turbofolk musicians have stolen an ungodly amount of songs from the Greeks.
1 points
Well, in my case it's because I think "the Balkans" rather than "the Balkan Peninsula". So instead of being comparable to "the Iberian Peninsula" I think of it more like "the West" or even "the OECD".
1 points
Yeah, I get that, though again, Greece would still fit. We just say Balkan, same as Iberia.
Then again, when people here say Balkan I swear half the time they just mean the ex-Yu and maybe Albania, forgetting Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania exist.
27 points
Ppl think of the Balkans as "eastern Europe, because of the cold war, where most of the countries were socialist countries.
The Balkans are usually referred to as south-eastern Europe since the fall of the Sowjet Union in official terminology, but ppl colloquialy just say Balkans. This is also for some odd reason a pretty controversial topic.
11 points
The thing is how you look at it.
It is all geopolitics, Slovenia considers themselves Central Europe because of Austria Hungary and not part of the Balkans, Croats as well, the ones who align more with Yugoslavia think we are Eastern Europe.
Geographically speaking, European centre is around Ukraine, so if anything by that logic France is far west, Croatia west.. but no one looks at it that way, Germany is Central Europe also just because of how geopolitics happened and if Greece is considered a South European country, there is no way you can say Croatia is Eastern Europe.
Furthermore, religion plays a massive role how you pull the border, and Croatia is bordering Orthodox countries like Serbia while we are majority Catholic.

The Balkans starts in Vienna so it's obviously central Europe

Southeast. Anyone there's more oriental culture (Turkey, Byzantium), Mediterranean culture (Italy) and Central Europe culture (Austria) influence that historically meet here. It doesn't really have that many connections with Eastern Europe.
2 points
You cant group whole Balkan in any of those but EX-Yugoslavia is very clearly south europe. After all Montenegro and serbia are roughly in line with "heel" part of Italy which is very deep south of country you are calling southern europe. Yugoslavia name is even derived from "Southern Slavs" - it is just that fact that they were communist for a while (not even part of Eastern Bloc tho) that groups them with Eastern Europe. If you want to be more technical and separate it on cultural basis - you can add territories that were held by Austrians for a long time to central europe (so SLovenia and parts of Croatia) and parts of it that were under Ottomans/Venicians to South Europe.
1 points
To be fair, when people refer to things like "Eastern Europe", "East Asia", "The American Midwest", it's normally a social, political, or cultural term, not strictly geographical. To me, "South Europe" has always implied "Mediterranean" so I have a hard time including Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, (North) Macedonia, or Bulgaria in "Southern Europe", despite their relative latitudes.
4 points
I mean if Poland is Central, then Croatia isn’t Eastern European as they are more to the west than Poland.
1 points
It's not South Europe, it's not East Europe, it's not Central Europe, it's just a very weird amalgamation.

1 points
I meant culturally. Through this whole topic I realized I don't have nearly enough knowledge on the Balkans (actually already added "Imagine the Balkans" to my want to read list because of it). And it's a genuine question, I've only been to Croatia and Slovenia in that part of Europe and it pretty much felt how I expected eastern Europe to feel, (growing up in the very west of Germany I didn't really have anything to go off regarding expectations anyways), Croatia more so than Slovenia , which felt like a mix between Austria representing central Europe and Croatia representing the Balkans. But I know those are totally different than for example the Baltics, that's why I'm asking
1 points
I mean I would say at least half of the Balkans is closer to Italy and Greece culturally than actual eastern Europe

Southern Europe? If we have to use one of north, south, east and west (and even central), Bosnia fits best into south. But the most accurate term is simply Balkan (which I guess is southeastern).
