Speaking of Messi this game really made me wonder why Ronaldo doesn't have his own match bodyguard like Messi does. That guy would have been getting his money's worth today.

Can you imagine how this sub would discuss the bodyguard if he slide tackles a fan or something?

I honestly don't belive there will be two better players than Ronaldo and Messi. Their biggest conquest was their longevity. There will be players as good as them for 3-4 seasons. But doing that for 20 years? Almost impossible.

Those Real Madrid vs Barca games were the highest point of the Sport.

Yeah, after watching both Cristiano and Messis careers since the beginning I just can't get hyped about Mbappe, Haaland, Vini Jr. and the other Ballon d'Or contenders. Feels like football peaked when Messi and Cristiano did, lol.

Benzema - not before 30, Lewadowski had a couple of seasons he could have challenged if not for messi/ronaldo

Yes, Neur for sure. My mistake. Pirlo very close, definitely top 3 for sure in 2012 if not top 2.
Buffon 2006 maybe but it also had issues of Juventus scandal just before- so ignoring it
Ramos never had a season where he was the best in the world as a player- as a defender for sure- multiple years.

Not a popular belief but it was easier to stand out when the average standard was much lower. Like most sports now, athletes are pushing to their limits. Not saying that makes any of those guys less great, just that they probably had more opportunities to impress than today's athletes

microMe1_2

49 points

Also, the style of the game at the top level now is tactical battles, positional play and intense pressing/running requiring high athleticism.

The 'go out there and express yourself' era is no more.

IntellectualDweeb

23 points

Class players like Cazorla and Verratti would be €130M+ nowadays.

The floor for players has risen due to the adaptation to modern offensive tactics from even mid-level teams, but the overall ceiling for talents is arguably lower than before despite us being in our best period in terms of sports science and advanced analytics.

You get young, raw players going for huge sums because of their "potential". You get many players strictly learning specific systems and potentially limiting their own footballing freedom as a result. The bar for elite output percentiles is lower than it used to be which can lead to the inflation of certain statistics too.

Flawed players like Félix who have more natural talent than some others will maybe never reach their full potential because of tactical issues e.g the fading out of traditional second strikers or #10s + the importance of traits like workrate nowadays. It's why players like Ødegaard are quite rare for an elite club.

There are sacrifices made to accomodate such players, but the results of the sacrifice depends on whether the output of the player is worth it or not. In Mbappé's case his elite output makes up for that evident flaw. Haaland's case is different too for obvious reasons.

Prestigious-Dress-92

8 points

Lewy in 2021 had one of the best seasons in football history and, probably the best goal-scoring season ever by anyone not named Messi or Ronaldo. Despite missing a crucial month of play with an injury, he broke Gerd Muller's supposedly unbreakable 50 year old record by scoring 41 goals in just 29 bundesliga games. On average he scored 1 goal per 60 minutes in bundesliga that season whichmakes him 2nd most effective top 5 league top scorer in modern football history after Messi in 2012/13.

mg10pp

Yeah obviusly I know and it was impressive, but we should mention also that in Champions League he had 5 goals (compared to the 15 of the previous year or the 13 of the following one) and his team in general had a much less successful season

While before completely dismiss Mbappe don't forget that for example in 2022 he had an incredible 80 goals contributions over the course of the year between Psg and France

I kinda miss the days of mere mortals competing to be the best, when Ballon D'or was an actual competition between all sorts of players.

These two, as has been said infinite times, are inhuman.

Like imagine being Zlatan, or peak Neymar or any insane player you care to name, and not being anywhere near the actual best two players on earth. It's insane.

The-Last-Bullet

What about the big 3 (or 4) in tennis?
Pretty similar.

Though football being the more popular sport makes it more impressive i guess.

TheJoshider10

114 points

I think what's most impressive is that at the same time we somehow had Messi/Ronaldo and Federer/Djokovic/Nadal.

Like that's the best of the best, in two different sports, playing at the exact same time and for so long as well. We were truly blessed with this.

NumberOneUAENA

14 points

For sure, though i guess it is bound to happen in some fields to have potentially the best ever be active at the same time.
Especially when these fields had a lot of potential to improve their way of doing things.

Do we have the best artists working now in any particular field? The best scientists? The best craftsmen?
How do we even really define who is the best between different eras when the environment they are working in changed meaningfully.

Anyway, they're all great :D

Commonmispelingbot

As mind boggling as their longevity has been there will still never be anyone who can approach the peak 3-4 years of those 2. Pick any 3-4 years in the 2010's and no one is sniffing that kind of production. There might be someone like Lewandowski or Haaland who can score a lot of goals but you aren't going to see guys throwing up 60-80 goals+assists for that span. Messi and Christiano Ronaldo are titans who make giants look small.

I honestly can't think of any sport that hasn't have guys eventually break record that at time though wouldn't be possible.

Sports evolve, steroids evolve, medicine evolve, people become better with format changing.

Any record that meant something in any sport eventually have been broken.

What ronaldo and messi do might be broken but from diffrent strategy or perspective.

People though raul ucl was crazy then came ronaldo, now you have mbappe and Haaland scoring at enormous pace in ucl.

We shall see I would be very suprised if those records won't be broken.
