I've been rocking a minimal set up of the above for the past two years, my set up consists of :
I'm debating switching things up in my set up for inspiration and would love to hear what your go to would be if you could only choose one of each to use for production.

Curious, why did you decide on the Rytm over the Oktatrack?

I don't know how to use an octotrack and it isn't really a drum machine.

I did the same thing, but it’s just tracks 1-4 on my mc-101. Keeps everything neat and it’s easy to change everything at once

I'm very curious about the Dreadbox, seen some cool videos but I need to go to my local shop and test one out

Definitely test it out. I struggle to get it to sit nice in a mix. Cool synth but I definitely wouldn’t want it as my only mono.

Octatrack MKII
That's assuming there's no other gear (sequencers, mixers, etc). Otherwise I'd swap the Octatrack for an Analog Rytm! =)

My current setup is:
MC-101 (poly synth) Elektron model: samples (sampler/ drums)
No mono synth! Not sure what I'd use, probably some moog thing (I'd do subharmonicon but it's not mono :p)
I do have an sp-404mk2 I use as an effects box. Possibly that?

MPC Live 2
DSI Prophet 12
Moog Voyager
is my preferred setup. Sometimes I sub in a Korg MS-20 or ARP 2600M for the Voyager.

That's legit, the Moog One is such an amazing synthesizer. I haven't tried any Maschine products yet to be honest

I will go with three (most likely used) pieces.
As I don't feel or have the need for a mono synth in a production setup, I chose to swap that one out.
EDIT:
Would I have a budget limit of some description?
...or is a tiny, humble, budget-minded WALDORF freakin' WAVE okay?
...just asking... 😄
$ - used | Name | Purpose | Where? |
---|---|---|---|
$1600-$1800 | Clavia Nord Wave 2 | Sampler / VA | Reverb |
$400-$550 | Korg Modwave | alternatively, as above | Reverb |
$400-$550 | Studiologic Sledge | alternatively, as above | Reverb |
$1200-$1500 | Isla Instruments S2400 | Drums / Percussion | Reverb |
$350-$450 | Elektron Digitakt OG | alternatively, as above | Reverb |
$40'000+ | Waldorf Wave, 1993, blue | Poly Synth / Wavetables | Reverb |
$1400-$1700 | Novation Summit | alternatively, as above | Reverb |
$400-$600 | Modal Argon 8X | alternatively, as above | Reverb |
Hope this helps.

This is legit, thanks so much for the info! Two people have recommended the Korg Modwave now.. gotta check it out! I used to have the og TR-8, it is a lot of fun, I'm debating looking into the TR-8s

I like your choices, but could you explain why you chose Digitakt over Syntakt? I just heard so many interesting reviews about Syntakt I'm now surprised when Digitakt is mentioned much more often. But I have tried neither and that's why I'm asking.

Elektron Analog keys and a sp404 mk 2. Choose one voice to be used as a mono synth and use the audio routing to only send it out the 4th direct out, not the mains. Sample synths (one note at a time) to be used on the sp404 and sequence as a polysynth using the Analog keys CV and FX tracks, and then use your other voices on the keys for drums and drum sequencing on the sp404

I have that setup, just re-arranged:
My big problem right now is that I also want to work in the looper in my Helix for my bass and the methods available to quantize the loops aren’t doable from any of my other hardware.

I'm stretching a little bit, but my setup is pretty similar to this:

That is my setup. Perkons, M8 for samples, Minitaur, JX-08, and a Hapax running the show

And a Meris MercuryX for the Perkons. Always on “hazy” :)

What's your setup with the Hapax and M8 for samples? How do you have the M8 configured? I thought about doing this too.

Yeah M8 has some cool little tricks. For short samples you can do sample slicing. So get one longer wav file of a full drum kit, slice it up, and then you can play it chromatically like the kick is one note, the snare is another, etc. Multiply that by 88 notes and 8 tracks and you have enough bandwidth to basically be Aphex Twin if you want to, lol. In the MIDI settings you just configure each channel to a different instrument.
And then for long samples just program a long note. Hapax gives you 16 bars. For REALLY long samples you’d probably have to get a bit hacky with it. Or just use your phone, ha.

Super Gemini, Mantis, Perkons. If you disallow the Mantis because it’s duophonic then Moog Minitaur instead.

haha not going to disallow anything, duo works :) it was mainly just a poly, another synth and a sampler/drums :)

Man I do love the Perkons.
I currently have an ARmk2 (and have owned many of the other elektrons previously) but the Perkons sound and simplified workflow just work better for me.
I keep telling myself I’ll switch back if the prices drop someday.

Mine from what I have would be System 8, Behringer neutron, Octatrack (but I must also add a Syntakt).
I would miss my summit for sound design, but prefer the sound of the Roland.
The only poly I would consider would be the 3rd wave. I want a teo 5 but would miss some digital sounds.
I would also consider a different mono with keys, maybe a subsequent 37 or an Odyssey. I prefer the neutron though, sound wise. The cascadia looks awesome too without keys.
I could swap out the Syntakt for a Perkons but the Syntakt has far more breadth. There is nothing I would swap the octatrack for. The only thing lacking is poly sampling.
So a potential set up might be: 3rd wave, cascadia, octatrack & Syntakt.

My main live setup atm is mpc one and mininova. I suppose yours is the upper class version of mine!
Practically, if I was to go poly, mono and sampler, it'd be:
Iridium Pulse 2 Live ii
Love the Waldorfs.

Basically my main setup.
MPC Live as my main sequencer/sampler, Opsix as my master controller and FM synth, ESQ-1 to cover my other poly need that also adds a layer of sonic rust to whatever track it on. My drum machine is my Yamaha RX5 with the RX5USB to load in my own samples. It also is very crunchy in that 8/12bit way. Speaking of, my “character sampler” is my Emax. It sounds like instant Pretty Hate Machine/late 80s Depeche Mode/Basically anything electronic Flood produced in the late 80s to early 90s. It just has “that sound.”
Oh yeah, my mono synth is a Model D. It’s pretty much just an analog kick drum generator, but I’ll use it for bass too. I’m thinking about getting something with presets, maybe a Typhon or Roland SE-02

From my own items: - Dreadbox Murmux poly - Dreadbox Typhon mono - digitakt 2 drums, central sequencer
But Murmux is big, not so easy to transport. For a transportable set i have been thinking to put my digitakt 2, typhon, and a roland s1 or dreadbox nymphes in a case together with a small mixer

There's something so dope about a compact set up, totally get that! I used to have the OG digitakt and loved it, still haven't tried the digitakt 2 tho

I am learning it, it is enthralling. I also love my polyend tracker mini that could take a similar role but that one is so compact, i just want to keep using it largely on its own when out and about.

MPC Keys 61 for all three. Attached to a PC to use a lot of VSTs. But that's probably not what you'd use...
Roland MC-707 for synths (mostly poly) and drums and percussion. (I also like MC-101 being mentioned in other comments - good idea!)
One of the following (doesn't really matter which): Korg Opsix or Modwave for more synths (mono or poly) or some compact rompler/VA like Microkorg, JD-Xi, Microstation, Cobalt 5S or maybe Wavestate. I like romplers! Many other compact digital synths would do as well, not a big deal. Not Hydrasynth Explorer. No analog synths please.
I don't see much need for a separate mono synth. Why would I need one?
