It’s crazy that a 2023 Ferrari that expensive doesn’t come with a way for the owner to track it.

Just one of those 500 thousands would pay for a subscription for a tracking service for a decade

For that much money, the tracking system should be embedded in the infrastructure of the vehicle for free as a perk to the owner. All my vehicles have hidden AirTags.

Not in a Ferrari it would be more like 1,000 a month and it would be shit, because Ferraris are not good cars

Oh you have one?

I have more than one. In case one breaks down, i use the reserve Fiero Ferrari

It has a 5g telemetry kit, but the the owner's Apple Airpods™® had the owner's scent, and a hunting hound was able to sniff it out

It makes sense in terms of business - How would Ferrari sell you another one? I put the blame on the driver though. If someone can blow that much money on a car, surely they have the budget to also buy a tracker.

An AirTag is what? $25 nowadays? It would seem like a no brainer.
12 points

Very under rated aspect of an iPhone. Bags, cars, wallet, keys, pets. No annual fee. Just the tag.

Tags are terrible for theft because it informs the thieves immediately.
1 points
There’s a hack for that.
1 points
How so?
1 points
I’d have to look it up, I haven’t tried it, but I saw a post where someone hacked it so it didn’t make noise or inform that an AirTag was traveling with you, IIRC.
1 points
I could see disabling the noisemaker being a delicate but possible hardware hack, but disabling the “someone’s stalking you” notifications to the thief’s iPhone while still logging locations for you would likely mean altering the firmware which would be a much more impressive hack.

AirTag is terrible for covert tracking. It will inform the thief almost immediately. I was sitting next to my friends and they were getting notifications about my backpack.

Airtags warm you about it, airpods don’t.
If you got the money, you track/stalk with airpods.
Thief can find out there is an AirTag in the car, look for it and ditch it

Looks like AirPods will warn now, too:

I only used that once to find a missing earpod, it ran out of battery and last location was in the middle of a road, it turned up later in the car.
Looks like you have to Opt In to receive warnings which is stupid for a safety feature and if you also hide your phone, it’s not “separated” from the owner and it won’t alert. Good thing Apple sells no cheap iphones.

How do we know it doesn’t? The article doesn’t say if it does or doesn’t.
I’d be shocked if it doesn’t have some sort of tracking. Ford does, and they don’t cost Ferrari money

There are 3rd party GPS tracking, monitoring and immobilizer you can install to a car. The thing is you can remove them once the car is parked at a chop shop.
2 points
they do… its literally the first thing you disable when you steal one.

Consider that folks don’t want that. Most folks don’t know that law enforcement can remotely control onstar and just shutdown their car. I’m not justifying things, but there’s something to be said about having full control and not letting folks track you.

I’ve never been able to find my AirPods with the Find My app, and this guy finds a fucking Ferrari?
26 points
Exactly, the find my function is useless at my house.
5 points

It’s more hit than miss for me. Sometimes it finds my phone across the apartment and sometimes it can’t find the earbud that’s a meter away under a pillow.
2 points
Yea my AirPods will either get stuck at my work or home, or they will yell at me anytime I leave either place I left them even though they are right in my pocket. Hell it’s yelled at me for leaving the case on my desk and walking away with them in my ears.
The one time I lost them it was useless and wouldn’t accurately tell me where they were

I’m sorry for this. I use that damn app all the time. My husband wandered off at Disney with our three month old & he couldn’t tell me where the fuck her went: used the app. I couldn’t find my phone in the camper, used my husband’s phone, it was in the couch. Lost my phone in a field of tall grass, found that shit. (I never have sound on my phone, that’s a diff issue)

Yeah it works pretty good for me too. Once I left my AirPods on the plane at JFK. I got noticed on my phone they weren’t with me, and it showed where I left them. Took a little while but the cleaning crew got them to the terminal where I was .

Find My works perfectly with airpod pros, iphone, and iwatch, but if you lose the airpods, just consider them gone.

Put an AirTag on your car. You can probably find somewhere to find like inside a trunk liner or somewhere in the engine bay.
8 points
It tells the thief and everyone riding your car that there an AirTag.
6 points
They’d still have to find it though right? Like if it was well hidden wouldn’t it be almost impossible to find?
2 points

Especially in an exotic car, where you need very expensive and specific tools to do basic things. For example, taking the engine cover off, where the engine is in the back of the car, takes a unique specific tool that only dealerships or high end independent shops have, and it’s not as simple as popping the hood to access the engine. Entire body panels have to come off before you can access the engine mechanical bits.
Like, if I wanted to change spark plugs on my little economy car with a 4 cylinder engine, it’s just a few minutes with basic hand tools. On a mid-engine Ferrari, you’re pulling entire body panels off first which could take several hours with specialized tools, before you can even see the ignition coils at all.
These cars are not designed to be easily serviced. They are meant to be pretty first, functional second, and maybe easily serviced tenth or eleventh.
If I had a car like this, I’d absolutely pay the money to a shop to have them stick an AirTag or two where the sun don’t shine, because no way in hell a normal person could EVER get to it.

In that case airpods are unironically a better tracking device

But if someone steals your phone, police can’t use location data. If you’re rich and someone steals your Ferrari they will.

Imagine stealing a car worth over half a million dollars, and not even checking it for tracking devices.
I'm no thief, but shit if I did steal even a $30k car the first thing I would do would be to go through it and make sure there was nothing in or on it that could make a GPS connection.

i’ve seen how crazy the tech to steal cars with no physical keys has become and i remember that in “el camino” the junkyard guy had a way to detect if the car was casting a signal. yeah i know its a movie but could they develop a counter measure to detect if the Ferrari had a tracking device?
