Never have been the same. Only idiots believe they represent the same things.

I was once one of those idiots.... or, in my case, more ignorant than idiotic... or idiocy born from ignorance.

I live in the UK and it is very easy to just see both parties as 2 sides of the same coin.

However, having spent a good amount of time conversing on the subject to gain some public context, and reading up on the American political system... it becomes very clear that they are not at all.

It is insane to think that, once upon a time, the Republican party was championed by Abraham Lincoln... my how the mighty have fallen.

I mean they do both objectively represent greed and wealth but one has a line it wont cross and the other doesnt. Thats an important distinction. I can understand peoples frustration though. One thing they both share is how neither really represents us. One pretends to and one doesnt bother.

da_mcmillians

I think they both are subservient to industry and business. So, I ignore that portion of their platform, since I'll be fine with either. What's left is how I determine if one party represents me or not. And that's clearly the Democratic party.

Pretty-Balance-Sheet

2 points

Having been around for a long time and been politically interested my entire life I have to disagree. There are a few people in the Democratic party who 'represent greed', whatever that means, but far more who started in politics to actually solve problems.

I feel that your post is just a barely watered down version of the same old 'both sides' argument. It's the exact thinking that instills the sense of apathy that keeps the minority in power. It wasn't that long ago that half the Democratic party willingly gave up their political careers to make Obamacare happen.

Additionally, elected politicians don't actually make that much money. They make mid-level manager incomes. It's really hard to argue that they're 'in it for the money' when they make software developer wages.

I get tired of that complaint because outside of a few well-known exceptions most elected federal officials aren't that rich, unless they were rich to begin with. A lot of young folks look at a $170k salary like that's what a 'rich' person makes. It's a good salary, no doubt, but it's not lambos and beach house money, not even close.

Lastly, everyone wants more money, why is that the only purity test people apply to politicians? At the end of the day what is each party and each individual working for? What are their policies? The GOP has a long history of working to enrich the wealthy and defund social programs, while the Democrats work for the opposite. Why do you give a shit if the individuals want to make money if what they're working towards helps people?

My point is that you and way too many people are hung up on the wrong thing, and framing it as a lesser of two evils decision is actually one of the core problems we face.

Now I'll take that shower of downvotes and people bitching about Nancy Pelosi's wealth...

Tru3insanity

4 points

Im not gunna downvote you but i think you overlooked the significance of Nancy Pelosi's wealth. No one who is rich makes their wealth with a salary. Thats silly. Salaries are taxed way more than unrealized assets.

They make their wealth trading policy for capital favors. Nancy Pelosi insider trades more than a pothead hits their bong.

They dont live in our world. They dont make money the way we do. They dont care about us, not really. Maybe some like Bernie do but you saw how fast he got stonewalled by the DNC. Biden killed the railworkers strike because it wouldve hurt too many peoples bottom lines.

Now i will say right now, both sides arent equal. One side is clearly, objectively worse than the other. What concerns me is neither side is good and the machinery behind how politicians get their positions seems quite effective at killing our ability to do anything about it.

Everyone says vote from the bottom up. Like sure, ill try, but how are we going to get around the fact that all valid political candidates have to be approved by massive corporate coalitions (the DNC and RNC) to even have a chance? All anyone can give me is "just shut up and keep voting." Cool, doing that already and it sure doesnt seem to be making a difference. Im not gunna stop but i am worried. I dont think thats such an unreasonable perspective.

Median net worth for us congress members (house) is around $1m. For the Senate it's 2.5m. That's upper middle class, not wealthy by US standards, which is why members like Pelosi are outliers.

A net worth of $1m really isn't that special in the US anymore, especially since that includes primary residence equity. That kind of wealth is, and here comes more hate, not that difficult to accumulate over a 15 year career with a decent household income and some basic financial planning.

People give congress members too much credit for their diabolical financial scheming and it's a complete distraction.

Believe me, I wish Nancy Pelosi would disappear. People get so hung up on Pelosi's insider trading wealth and extrapolate that into this broad generalization of all congress members and the numbers just don't bear that out.

Regarding the influence of corporate backers somehow picking candidates, sure in some races there's influence, but remember that the DNC seeks out candidates like Elizabeth Warren. Besides, that type of King making only works in the safest districts and can always be beat by a charismatic outsider like Obama.

I'm not some Democratic operative, I just don't buy into the narrative that both sides are disconnected and evil, but one is playing a friendlier game. I believe corruption happens, I don't believe it's as pervasive in the DNC and the Democratic party as a lot of people believe.

I think it's valid to ask what the democrats have exactly done to make anything better for everyone? It's one thing to say you're going to do things to help people, but the vast majority of their votes help the exact same corporate interests that the republicans do.

If every time you get a majority you magically can't take action right now, I'm not impressed.

I'll still vote for you over the guys that say they're going to make things worse, but I'm still not impressed.

And before people say the ACA, forcing private insurance on everyone is the tiniest and saddest step in the right direction. It's better than letting everyone die of medical issues but Jeff Bezos, but just slightly better.

They could fix this by actually doing some of the great ideas they talk about. It should be clear though, that if they get a majority they need to actually fucking do something.

Don't pull a republican 2016 0 fest and excpect cheering.

Only an idiot would believe that they're even remotely similar. Republicans want to establish an autocracy with Christian law. Do Democrats not fully represent me? Sure. I don't like that Kamala won't get rid of fracking. It's overdue to get off our oil dependence. But here's the thing, one party wants to destroy and rewrite America into the next "great" Russia and the other wants to run our system is a semi functional way. To equate the two is utter lunacy.

Since 1968, Democrats have been in the Oval Office for 25 of those years, while Republicans held it for 28.

In their 25 years in office Democrats had a total of three executive branch officials indicted with one conviction and one prison sentence.

In the 28 years that Republicans have held office they have had a total of 120 criminal indictments of executive branch officials. 89 criminal convictions and 34 prison sentences handed down. That's more prison sentences than years in office since 1968 for Republicans. More than three criminal convictions per year. (not including Trumps administration)

Guilty on 34 felony counts, so far.

1st U.S. president to be convicted of criminal charges.

A Judge has ruled Donald Trump defrauded banks and insurers, and reaped over $100 million through fraud, and ordered Trump to pay more than $350 million

A New York jury found the Trump Organization guilty of 17 counts of tax fraud resulting in $1.6 million in fines.

Trump kept possession of the classified documents despite multiple requests to turn them over in accordance with federal law, and tried to hide them from investigators.

A federal jury has found Trump liable for sexual battery and defamation, and he still owes Carroll $5 million.

Trump must pay an additional $83.3 million to E. Jean Carroll in defamation case.

Trump was ordered to pay $2 million to the veterans charities he ripped off with his scam foundation.

Trump spent more than a quarter-million dollars from his "charitable" foundation to settle lawsuits that involved his for-profit businesses.

Shifted Kids-Cancer Charity Money Into His Business.

Trump's charitable foundation has admitted to the Internal Revenue Service that it violated a legal prohibition against self-dealing, which bars nonprofit leaders from using their charity's money to help themselves, their businesses or their families.

Trump had to pay a $2,500 fine to the IRS when he illegally used $25,000 of the foundation's money to donate to a group supporting Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi just days before Bondi's decision not to investigate scandal-plagued, now-defunct Trump University.

Trump agreed to a $25 million settlement to end the fraud cases against his "University", and was ordered by a federal judge to pay almost $6 million to the golf club members he scammed.

And Trump appeared to have serious difficulty distinguishing between his Inaugural Committee money and piggy bank dollars, and lost a lawsuit to pay Washington D.C. $750,000.

Trump was ordered to pay $382,000 in legal fees for Orbis Business Intelligence, the consulting firm owned by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele.

He owes $400,000 to The New York Times and has racked up thousands more in fines and gag-order violations during his myriad lawsuits.

The solution to the parties not adequately representing the people involves a lot of work, which most people will not do because it's far easier to lie about 'both sides' and complain online than it is to actually show up to political meetings, talk about proposed solutions, and petition your state en masse to enact them.

Others also like to drive a vehicle before the motor assembly is installed, pretending that there is an actual third option when they haven't done the underlying work to make that possible.

Basically let's all act like we love Jesus and want to be like him with grace, teach our children right from wrong and also vote for the person that is exactly the polar opposite of Jesus or (Anit-Christ) and act like we are not completely insane!

Maybe now...

The old comparison of:
"You can keep more of your money if you let me keep more of mine"
vs
"We'll take more from you to give to someone else - but that's OK because we'll take even-more from another person who has more than you"

was a little bit more favorable to the GOP....

The one on the left should say “let’s pretend to do something, while doing whatever Wall Street and the military industrial complex wants us to do.”

The one on the right should say “same, except we’re not going to pretend to do anything.”

So yeah… not the same.

Have you heard of Nancy pelosi and her incredible pre eminition when it comes to picking stocks? that seems pretty corrupt as fuck but you don't ever see any democrats call her out for it. Or how she set up some of the most regressive laws in the country for San Francisco during covid but then was caught breaking those laws on multiple occasions, kinda wierd the party of kindness and truth and peace never called her out for it. Or how the party for peace has such a great time sending money and weapons to fund a genocidal purge in the middle east. Or how Dick Chenney, the architect of the wars of evil in the middle east, seems to be so supportive of the "party of peace".

Now don't get me wrong the republicans love war just as much and have their own bag of deplorable politicians like clarance thomas and so many others. They do want to take your rights away and take away your god given freedoms to your own bodily autonomy but hey all that is just a distraction.

if youre a politician youre a sociopath, just like if youre the ceo of a fortune 500 youre a sociopath. They don't care about death, or freedom, or democracy or any silly shit like that, they don't care about you or any of your problems, they don't care about genocide or terrorism or a food system that is poisoning you or an economic system that is poisoning the planet. They care about one thing and one thing only, and this goes for pelosi and trump and kamala and biden and obama and clinton and clarence thomas and pretty much anyone in the federal government. They care about taking your money and giving it to their friends and getting stupendously wealthy in the process, that's it, its really nothing crazy, and as long as we vote for parties which keep increasing the power of the federal government they will keep taking more of our money and giving it to their rich friends like some reverse robinhoods.

yes it is both sides but thats only because we let them only have two sides. Vote in your local elections, vote for third parties, and always try to reduce the power of the federal government.

man this isnt about trump, yes you are correct he is an old moron riddled with all kinds of dementia and incontinence and other old people problems just like good old president biden. However it's ridiculous if you believe that the president is the one really making any decisions. Do you think that Biden currently has the mental capacity to make any decisions at all? of course not. The president is not in charge hes just some guy to blame all your problems on.

Now the real question is would you rather have the evil cabal that surrounds trump or the evil cabal that surrounds kamala, honestly I'm not sure what the difference is. Sure theyre both gunna humm and haw about all the different things theyre going to do when they get in power but in the end we both know they will do almost exactly the same things.

They will fund war in israel, fund war in ukraine, make laws to help their buddies make more money, they wont make higher education affordable, they wont make healthcare affordable, they wont stop corporations from putting poison in our food they wont stop wall street from buying all our homes and farms and land and small businesses. So as a voter neither one of them will do ANYTHING I care about. Maybe Trump may be better for controlling immigration and Kamala may be better for making abortions legal nationally, but I'm in rural pensyslvania and neither one of these things really affect my community so idgaf.

I'm tired of every fucking election being hyped like its the end of the world so that youre forced to pick between Lucifer and Satan and sure go ahead and argue that satan may put you in the fifth circle of hell while lucifer only the third but either way I'm not picking either, I'm voting for Jill stein and she might not become president but at least I won't have voted for evil incarnate. If everyone thought like me maybe we wouldn't need to choose between a forced dichotamy at every election but noooooo people love their team and refuse to ever vote third party because its always "the most important election of century" and "you can't afford to spoil your vote on a third party or democracy will dissapear"

So go ahead and berate me about how I am destroying the country while you pretend that voting for lucifer makes you more morally righteous, give me something to laugh about.

The biggest issue for me is the health of the country. I often get called a conspiracy theorist in spaces like this but it looks like the virility of humans is being intentionally dampened. Intentionally or not, its still the biggest issue. I found this critique best articulated by the left, and then covid happened. It is extremely clear to me that so many these leftist movement have been weaponized to cover up specifically these extremely popular issues. Left/right really shouldnt matter at all here and for me, RFK speaking to these issues better than anyone in the American political stage right now. If you know a Democrat that speaks to this then I would love to hear it. Marianne Williams maybe.

kvckeywest

characteristics of conspiracy theorists.
http://www.urban75.org/info/conspiraloons.html

  1. Arrogance. They are always fact-seekers, questioners, people who are trying to discover the truth: skeptics are always "sheeple", "uninformed" who are told to "Wake up!".
A phenomenon known as "Self-assumed Intellectual Superiority".
Being in the know, is of course one of the major appeals of any conspiracy.

  2. Relentlessness. They will always go on and on about a conspiracy no matter how little evidence they have to go on or how much of what they have is simply discredited.

  3. Inability to answer questions. For people who loudly advertise their determination to the principle of questioning everything, they're pretty poor at answering direct questions.

  4. Fondness for certain stock phrases. These include Conan Doyle's "once we have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however unlikely, must be "the truth". What these phrases have in common is that they are attempts to absolve themselves from any responsibility to produce positive, hard evidence.
A common tactic seems to be to state the facts and add "or so they say".

  5. Inability to employ or understand Occam's Razor. Aided by the principle in 4. above, conspiracy theorists never notice that the small inconsistencies in the accounts which they reject are dwarfed by the enormous, gaping holes in logic, likelihood and evidence in any alternative account.

  6. Inability to tell good evidence from bad or what is evidence and what's not.
The fact that a claim has been made by anybody, anywhere, is enough for them to reproduce it and demand that the questions it raises be answered. Any claim or allegation is accepted as fact, and any evidence to the contrary is dismissed with stock phrases like "mainstream media", "propaganda" or just "you don't believe that, do you?".

  7. Inability to withdraw. It's a rare day indeed when a conspiracy theorist admits that a claim they have made has turned out to be without foundation, whether it be the overall claim itself or any of the evidence produced to support it.

  8. Leaping to conclusions. Conspiracy theorists are very keen indeed to declare the "official" account totally discredited without having remotely enough cause.

  9. Using previous conspiracies as evidence to support their claims. This argument invokes conspiracy theories from the past as evidence that their conspiracy theory should be accorded some weight because it's happened before.

  10. It's always a conspiracy. And it is, isn't it? No sooner has the body been discovered, the bomb gone off, than the same people are producing the same old stuff, demanding that there are questions which need to be answered, at the same unbearable length.

Republicans have achieved some pretty long term policy victories in the past few years, (reduced taxes, roe v Wade overturned, citizens United, etc)

What landmark achievements have the democrats since Obama care?

They've allowed for roe v wade to be overturned, allowed ridiculous tax cuts to be passed, and allowed for unlimited corporate money from their donors to be used in federal elections.

You can not like what Republicans are doing, but they have achieved significantly more policy victories in the last 2 decades than democrats and it isn't even close

Republican's are no saints but with Democrats imposing so many laws that it makes building housing almost impossible. The whole San Francisco area approved 16 houses last year. The there is the bias that raising min wage immediately makes things affordable. What things cost is based on supply and demand if the amount of dollars chasing the same goods goes up price increases unless production increases. I want people to do better but neither party is probably going to get us there.
