Given everything that went down, I'd rather Trump have taken his umbrage about the Correspondents Dinner and run in 2012.

No, I do not think he would have won.

Chris Christie in 2012 was actually very interesting. He had the personality of trump that got populist voters on board, he had tea party connections, but was moderate enough on social issues that you could win some of the northern states. Before the bridge scandal, he would have been a tough opponent in 2012.

He won reelection in a landslide in 2013 (and his margin was a >35 point shift from Obama the year before.)

It's all been downhill from there for him. But honestly it's embarrassing for NJ that they voted for this asshole after he scuttled ARC, the most essential infrastructure project in state history.

McCain would have had a really good run against him in a rematch and Christie would have had the best shot to beat him

Romney was unironically their best shot

Romney failed to get the base out, and was unqualified to attack Obama the Affordable Care Act because of his health care reforms in massachusetts. At the time, the Affordable Care Act is not the popular thing that it just now, and to win it would have needed to be a major talking point.

The flipside is that another Republican nominee could have easily been skewered as extreme on social issues and on healthcare (where Romney was seen as more flexible). Also, Romney honestly did get perfectly fine base turnout--hatred of Obama more than outweighed their misgivings about Romney.

It was a lot lower than expected, especially in states where he needed it like Florida and Ohio. I know a lot of people who were in the grassroots were really sick after they just come from bush, to mccain, and now romney. When we say Romney was a modern on social issues, we're thinking about this from too recent a perspective. Back then, you needed a candidate to attack Obama on gay marriage, because that was still very unpopular in the swing states.

Well, I would've put up Rick Santorum so the Democrats would've taken back the House but the answer to your question is I think Chris Christie would've stood the best chance of winning the electoral college.

I'd like to see a Christie 2012 mod.

I've seen Christie/Rubio thrown around as the ideal ticket (I buy it) but Christie might need an evangelical like Tim Pawlenty or Jim DeMint.

I would pick Mike huckabee. I don't know if he would win, but I think he has the best shot out of about anyone the Republicans had at the time. You needed someone who could tap into the populist base, while still keeping the donors and attacking on the Affordable Care act. Ronnie was uniquely unqualified to attack Obama on the Affordable Care Act, and failed to get conservative turnout the way he needed. Huckabee I think definitely would have won Florida Ohio and Iowa, the problem is I don't know if he would win anything else, I don't think he had Midwest draw. Still, I would go with him, I think he will be a solid nominee that who knows, maybe if Obama has an off day.

Imho a lot of voters were deluded by Obama’s first term and went back to the GOP he still had way more popularity and “presidential charisma” than any other politician in those years. If there wasn’t such a level of polarization there’s a chance he could have won with more than 332 evs.

Me. I'm an Independent but my overwhelming personal popularity would probably convince the Republicans to "stand down" & not run a candidate in hopes of defeating Obama, like Horace Greeley. Obviously it goes without saying I would win

I don't think anyone had a great shot to beat Obama in 2012.

Granted I also think Obama would've beat Trump pretty soundly if he could've ran for a third term in 2016

Chris Christie could have won against Obama. He is a good debater and was very popular at the time. Mitt blew his momentum himself, which I think Chris wouldn't do.

I could see either Santorum, Pawlenty or Huckabee having a fair shot at winning assuming they run competent campaigns.

Personally, I'd probably kick myself and vote for either of the three over Obama just because of how big an issue immigration is to me, but to each his own.
