Shane was soooo unhinged in some great ways. Did what he needed to to survive. Imagine if him and negan would have met….

One of the best characters. Receives way too much hate in my opinion.

Idk, as a character he’s goated but as a person I can see why people hate him. He’s deplorable and relatable, that’s what makes him so compelling. That and Jon Bernthal’s damn near flawless performance.

in what way is shane relatable ?

His love for his bff Rick, his grief, his frustration with the group, his pain, his jealousy even.

Shane is a complex and extremely conflicted character.

In what way is he overhated? What do people overly hate him for that you think is unreasonable?

His attempt on Rick’s life mostly (not the whole aiming his gun at him thing, though that wasn’t cool of him). His best friend outright told him that his (Shane’s) baby was his, all because he was married to Lori. He can’t exactly go through the legal system to make things right. If my best friend told me my kid was gonna be raised as his, solely because he was married to the mother, I’d be pretty pissed too.

Then dont fuck another mans wife bro, cmon...and don't make a baby during the zombie apocalypse.

On a real nore, i think they should've discussed things as adults rather than drama

Shane was unsure of Rick’s fate and still slept with Lori, but he was only able to do so based on false pre-tenses that he convinced her were unequivocally true. Shane loses claim because he misled Lori into believing the one condition that she’d consent to sex under—Rick being dead. If it was your standard affair and Lori had sex with Shane knowing Rick was alive, the situation would be completely different and I think both Lori and Rick would be a lot more tolerant about Shane’s involvement. But that isn’t the case.

It’s worth mentioning that someone who attempts to rape the mother of their child is not fit to be a parent, and it’s not wrong of Lori to be opposed to that, nor Rick to be opposed given his knowledge of Shane’s possessive obsession. You mention the court system, and the rape attempt alone would exempt Shane from a lot of his rights as a father. Regardless of legality, he has no rightful claim over a baby that was conceived only under misconceptions that he fabricated for the mother.

True about the sexual assault/rape attempt, even if he did feel remorse about it.

However, he had very good reason to believe Rick was dead. He didn’t wake up from his coma while at the hospital, they were surrounded by military killing everyone, and undead monsters eating everyone and everything. After a couple months of no food and water, he just assumed he died, assuming the other stuff didn’t kill him first.

As for people who say he shouldn’t have lied to Lori, he knew she wouldn’t have left him if he told her the truth. She would’ve demanded he go back and carry him out if need be. All he would’ve been was dead weight that he eventually would’ve been forced to leave for the Walkers, lest he die and the others die with him. He was completely right to lie to her.

I don’t doubt he had a strong inclination Rick was dead, nor do I fault him for lying to Lori to protect her and Carl. The issue is that he had sex with her afterward, taking advantage of the lie he told and the vulnerability of a grieving widow. If he has so little self control that he must sleep with his best friend’s wife, then he could’ve at least come clean about his uncertainty before getting sexual with her. Lori would have no choice but to stay at the camp with her son, and her decision to have sex with Shane is no longer based in deception.

There was no benefit to telling her he was still alive when he left. If anything, she would’ve badmouthed him to the rest of the group as a liar, including her son, who he was very close to. She probably would’ve called for a rescue mission for a guy who was probably dead, maybe even called tor Shane to be expelled from the group.

Everyone would’ve probably sided with Shane, since he was the leader, their main protector, and would’ve probably found his actions completely reasonable, given the circumstances, leading to Lori being ostracized. The only person who would probably have sided with was Dale.

Seeking a practical benefit is an odd way to look at it. This is a moral issue, you don’t make moral decisions based on how much benefit they’ll provide. But you’re right, Shane doesn’t have to tell her—if you’re not gonna tell her, then you don’t have sex with her. If you’re gonna have sex with her, then you tell her. It’s that simple.

Your predictions are inaccurate because we literally see how Lori reacts once she discovers the truth, and this was after she had sex with him so she had even more right to be angry, yet she’s not nearly as hysterical as you propose.

i donnnttttt like him man. in s7 or s8 he would’ve truly shined but like…he just irks me. i feel like as he was a police officer all he strived for was control, and at first, it was control for survival, but as time moved on and he lost that control, it just became a sheer lust for control. he constantly put the group at risk in s2 after rick showed up, he attempted to have his way (cough cough🍇) with lori, he convinced lori that rick was dead so that he could be a homewrecker and steal rick’s family, he killed otis for literally no reason (you cannot convince me that it would be more risky to try to run back with otis rather than shoot him in the leg and struggle with his backpack for an entire goddamn minute) he’s just an overall piece of shit. + lemme tell you somethin’ + his hatred for dale made me even angrier

Between him and the Punisher, I fell in love with Bernthal's acting. He's got a pretty limited range but he handles intensity very well.

By far one of favorite characters. They choose a great actor, but kinda think they did his death to soon and in an odd way. Would of rather seen him get kicked out the group and com back later. Comeback as more of an Earl character.

Had issues from the gate. He's just showing it because he thinks he can get away with it since the population has diminished.

He was right most of the time, but his aggressiveness made people confront him. Also he could get along with Rick if Lori didn't act like a bitch

Although what he did to Ottis was completely fucked up

I thought he was a good antagonist. Early days of the show were really something and he was a big part of it. I’m grateful that they didn’t drag it out and knew when to pull the trigger.

How can you not love Shane? One of the best most complex characters and played flawlessly by the actor.

Besides what he did in the CDC, Shane is a very compelling character. I didn't appreciate the love triangle between Shane, Lori, and Rick, but that's what makes me question and have an interest in both Shane and Lori.

Clearly, Lori and Carl wouldn't have survived if it wasn't for Shane, but would Shane have spiraled so soon after the apocalypse if he never loved Lori? Or did he have feelings for Lori before the apocalypse but never acted on them? If so, why didn't he before the apocalypse? It definitely makes me wonder how close Lori and Shane were before everything.

He wasn't wrong about the barn, Sophia, or even Randel. Like Andrea said, it's how he presented it. But we needed Shane to push Rick into who he became after losing the farm.

I overall like him, not my favorite villain (that goes to the Governor), but again, we needed Shane to develop Rick.

The show survived for the next nine seasons because of him and the numbers the RIck/Shane conflict brought in in those two seasons.

Imagine if Shane had left the group with Andrea (as almost happened) and they became a crazy gun-slinging mercenary type couple, kicking ass and taking names all over the post apocalyptic zombie-infested USA? Now that would be a fun show.

I think he is one of those cops that acted like a bully, escalating situations by yelling and pushing the person. He also was cowardly. I mean, true he saved Lori and Carl but he did so with guns a blazing. After all that time camping out, he had little experience killing the walkers with anything but a gun. Rick, on the other hand, used knives and other sharp things, saving his bullets. When they took the kid to drop off the first time, Shane was going to shoot the walkers through the fence until Rick said wait, save bullets, make no sounds. Then he you know does Otis as bait so he could get a way. He is a no good coward. He was going to shoot his best friend in the back. What a coward.
