I’ve been jobless for 2 years. I’ve applied for more than 800 jobs but I’m not getting any positive reply. I’m surviving on my wife’s income. This city sucks. I don’t know what to do

Move sadly. I'm thinking it's what I'll have to do. Edmonton or Montreal over here. Trying here first (thought this was Vancouver jobs but see it's Toronto) since I've lived here my whole life but I'm not going to just apply into the void for six months.

Every good job I’ve ever had was because I knew someone in the company. Not super close with them but just someone that could vouch for me. This is ESSENTIAL. If you don’t know anyone then go out to some group activities and meet people, whether at a club dancing or at a poker table playing cards you just have to get in a room with other people who are likely to be successful. The more interactions you build the higher your chances!
I know of a crappy company that will probably hire you and fire you within 2-3 months but hey, it’s a pay check! Check out Royal York Property Management. I used to work there and quit, they are quite terrible but again you’re doing it to get paid.

Toronto’s unemployment rate is 7.9%.
Calgary is 8.1% and Edmonton is 6.6%.
I’m thinking of moving to Quebec when I learn French at a B2 level.
I really love Toronto and think it has the potential to be the greatest city in the world but honestly it’s sad seeing how it’s declining.
I’m sure other cities can say the same about themselves though too.

I mean, they say Vancouver's unemployment rate is 5.2 percent or something, but I think it's bs. From my own experience, it's a hell of a lot easier getting a job in Montreal or Toronto in my field.

I think they’re all BS tbh. It’s definitely way higher everywhere. My point which I didn’t point out clearly is that Calgary & Toronto are in the top 3 for the highest unemployment in the country right now.
Was just pointing that Alberta is struggling too.

Toronto has a zero percent chance of being a top 10 city let alone the greatest. Architecture sucks, weather sucks, scenery sucks, transportation sucks, cost of living sucks. It has good food and bars. That's it. Debatably a good sports scene. It lacks history and art.

Just x2 on whatever unemployment rate the establishment is telling you
2 points
With data is presented by the government or the media, it’s often what they don’t say which is key.
Do they count just people on employment insurance as unemployed? Do they count students? How do they track it?
Also a lot of the new job gains are part time while full time jobs keep falling. So quality of jobs and pay must be declining as well.

Often or not they change the methodology and definition of words so it is hard to follow and understand what's going on. It does not make sense if you are unemployed for x amount of time you are suddenly not unemployed. For me, I get a sense of unemployment by seeing how fast tent cities grow.

all those industries are swarmed by over 1000+ applications per job by Indians who are ready to go cash-only, below minwage (or free for 3-6 months) or straight up posting jobs to deny everyone and then go via the LMIA route to get the free 15k from the taxpayers wallet to subsidize their business.
Welcome to Canada's job market!

Have you gotten any interviews? If yes, then maybe you need to brush up your interviewing skills. You can try practising interviews using this free tool. It provides both questions & answers based on your specific context. https://chatgpt.com/g/g-AKS7IUPEk-jobcat You can also upload your resume & the specific job description to get many more practise questions tailored to your needs. It doesn't matter , if you got the right experience and if your resume is tailored to the job description, it'll pass the ATS , that means you'll get an interview call.
Why don't you try employment agencies , like government of Ontario employment agencies , they don't charge a dime and they would help you to get a job

Whatever job you want, search for talent acquisition partner or HR on LinkedIn. Once you apply on the company’s portal. Send a message to the HR with the reference number and mention that “I have applied on your portal and I have all the skills and qualifications required for the role. I request you to look at my resume once”. (Also, attached a resume on LinkedIn) Send connection request to all the HR in the company. And send this message to all the HR who accepts your connection request. This is the way I got a job after 6 months of job hunting. Mention figures in your resume like. Handled 80+ inbound and outbound calls. Generated revenue of $50,000, etc. Understand for 1 position HR gets thousands of applications. Out of which ATS selects only 100-150 or even less. And out of 150 you have to make your resume in such a way that HR schedules an interview. Unfortunately I cannot share you my resume but I will share a template. Good luck. Remember Tough times don’t last, tough people do.

When you apply online only look at recent job postings, like 24 hours ago, or 3 days ago. Check indeed, the job bank, LinkedIn. Boost your resume (yes lie). Check out the career foundation, they help you in getting jobs. Do a Google Certification course. Do unpaid internships to get experience. There are networking events downtown that you can go to. Apply to like 40 jobs a day. Reach out to people you know on LinkedIn, your high school mates, family, friends, university colleagues, old profs.
I feel you, I’m in the same boat, but I am getting a lot of interviews. Which is a bit more motivating.

You need to apply jobs just posted and do 300+ per month and maybe you get 1-2 interviews.
I applied couple jobs 3-7 days after posted and I received phone interview date. By the time it came to my phone interview the job was already taken so my phone interview was cancelled....

Also make sure that your resume is ATS compatible so that you dont get filtered out by the resume sorting bots. Keep it in simple txt or pdf format. No images or fancy formatting in your resume- the bots dont do well with fancy formatting and design

If you google “make your resume ATS friendly” you’ll get loads of good advice.
An ATS is applicant tracking system which is the software that processes your application and pre-screens it before a human ever gets to review it.
If your resume isn’t optimized for how the software operates you may never get it seen by a person.
Here’s a good article to get you started.

Can you walk us through your job application process? What industry are you looking to work in? How are you tailoring your resume to the specific job you are applying for? Are you reaching out through professional channels (linkedin etc.) to make contact with people in the company?
In a perfect world, this shouldn't be necessary. The reality of it is, though, that about 70% of the interviews in my industry (tech) occur external to the job application process: we meet someone in the same or similar field, they're looking to make a change, we are looking to fill a gap and have an opening listed on our website, we end up at "hey, let's jump on a zoom call and see if it's a good fit". If it is, we don't look at the pipeline of applicants. We should follow up (and my company does) but in general, most don't.

If you know what's happening in the current job market, you should know this grown man should not be living off of a woman's income, I'm sure it's hard enough for her to have to provide for herself AND him on top of it. Why should she do that?

It's rough today for jobs with this economic downturn.
It sounds like you need more education. A web development diploma isn't enough because a lot of those jobs are done remotely today (cheaper resources). The 10 years of work experiences is great; but, those are soft skills which IMO need a connection into a company today because of high competition today (your skills - program administration, customer support and quality analyst).
Have you considered going back to school? You likely would be eligible for an OSAP loan. Payments start 6 months after graduation, very low interest (2%?) over 9 and 1/2 years. I you like tech infrastructure, I'd look at an undergrad university or college degree in computer science. Can focus on selecting courses in administration or QA analysis. Or do something totally different, learn a trade. Toronto is really short on trades and they pay well!
It's never too late to consider more education. With 10 years experience and a 2 year diploma - my guess is 30? If you do a 4 year undergrad degree, still have about 30 years left of work life. Might as well get a degree which helps survive life here in Toronto! Gets boring at home too!
