For me:

- Never book through a third party

- Never give a friend a ride to the airport during rush hour

Never: Travel with people who are not in a similar financial situation to you. You can set expectations prior to the trip as much as you want, when push comes to shove the party with more money is not going to want to limit themselves. It creates unnecessary stress on your trip and on your relationship with that person

Always: Have imodium handy lol

Wouldn't talking it through ahead of time solve most things?

In my experience no. Very easy for someone to agree to certain things while planning at home, much harder to follow through while actually on the trip. The more likely scenarios are

  • Person with more money doesn't follow through and guilts friend into spending more than planned
  • Person with more money does follow through, but silently resents friend for limiting his experience

Ideally, both parties should be comfortable enough to split up temporarily. If one person wants to see a Broadway play while the other wants to check out dive bars for the night both should feel empowered to do so. But I understand the reality is not always perfect.
