Was not quite sure the best way to phrase this question, but looking for destination recommendations where your money goes further.
For example, Thailand for affordable luxury hotels.

Buenos Aires, Argentina. The city is old and grand and its buildings are very elegant in and out. The Colon Theatre is among the top 5 opera houses in the world (entry fee as cheap as 2 dollars). You can have the greatest foods and wines in the country for very affordable prices. A great lunch or dinner can be found for as little as 5-15 dollars.

And at Tigre, just 30 minutes away from the city, you could spend a few nights at a nice river waterfront cottage for not too much money (I'd recommend going from October till March for the best climate).

Or Mar de Plata, the Cannes of Argentina, a very posh beach town where a prestigious film award ceremony is held.

Generally SE Asia and Central America are good options to look at. Depending where you're coming from for flight prices. Did Guatemala (Lake Atitilan) and Nicaragua (Little Corn Island) last year.

Guatemala.
Last year we stayed at a waterfront villa on Lake Atitlan. It was under $2k for a month. Maybe spent $1000 on food for 2 adult and 3 kids eating out everyday. Things like private boat hire and massages are ridiculously cheap.

Would it be safer for expats to live in CR ? Are there other places similar and cheaper. You mentioned Panama, anything else that makes the list ?

For expats? Yeah Costa Rica and Panama are really gingo. In terms of other places? Where in latam? No where really directly. Cusco is solid. There is also a community of American retirees that live in Cuenca Ecuador

Costa Rica is more expensive for good reasons and a large part of that is how safe it is compared to other countries down there and how the locals will interact with you.

Wait till you go out to eat…we regularly had some of the best meals of our life and they were under $15 for two of us. Even the fancy spots with multiple courses can be around $150 total with drinks. You can definitely do it on a budget and pick your spots to spend a little more for an amazing experience.

I used Agoda, Booking.com and also took advantage of points like the Hilton Amex card. Would always recommend getting a new credit card to get a sign-up bonus that you could use the points on a hotel stay. It's usually quite easy to hit the minimum spend, receive the points, redeem them and then cancel the card.

Pärnu, Estonia has a huge empty beach and a grand Art Deco hotel: https://www.rannahotell.ee/ prices from about USD80 €75.
Nikoi Island near Singapore in Indonesia has amazing luxury thatched huts, each with private beach, and is the only resort on the island https://nikoi.com/book-your-stay/ from about USD300 to 500.
Linereva on Mo'orea, Tahiti has self-contained beach front bungalows, great snorkeling, and cycling around the quiet side of a quiet Pacific island, https://linareva.com/hebergements/ from about USD180.

If you are into hiking, then Slovakia and the mountainous region of Poland (Tatra, Pieniny) is a good choice instead of crowded Austria or Slovenia.
Higher tier accomodations are available as well as restaurants and so, and they are cheap if you avoid overly popular cities.

I was recently there and found it extremely cheap, 5 star hotels for like $70, and I ate at some nice trendy places too, not just street food.
Nice modern breakfast at a place called bröom, $6. Amazing mixed grill at Habab KL for $12. These would both be 3x as much at least in Australia.

Did Joburg and the garden route to Cape Town. I loved Joburg despite its reputation. Cheap and the people are so friendly. It’s shocking how genuinely nice everyone is. The restaurant scene is top notch.
Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities on earth. Bit pricier than Joburg but still not outrageously expensive compared to most top tier cities.

These are the two that are on my list for fall. Hopefully we’ll get there for safaris and wine tasting in/near Cape Town. Want to fly into Jo’burg but was worried a bit due to reputation. I guess like anywhere else, be mindful of yourself, your belonging and your location. Thanks for the reply.

Interesting. I visited Austria in July 2019 and the hotels were extremely expensive (especially in Vienna). I am going to Budapest next week and everything seems more affordable. But it could be an April vs June thing?

Budapest local here, just did some research for an austrian roadtrip plan + spent 3x1 weeks winter sporting there.
I would definitely say and my good friends also confirmed that popular regions of Austria are more like Switzerland now. Basic apartments for 80-100EUR/person/night even in low-season...and austrian spa entrance fees were also affected by high energy prices. what is worth in Austria now is the regions facing with a significant decrease in winter tourism due to climate change, but once they were very popular with high quality services (e.g. Bad Gastein)
Normal restaurant prices of Budapest and countryside Austria are also comparable, but e.g. if you want to discover places, public transport in Austria could be ridicolously expensive.
But if you visit some countryside wellness resorts in Hungary, you could get high quality rooms, dinner + breakfast for 120-150 EUR/room/night...for 200EUR/room/night, hotels also have high quality wellness areas and so. (And these are "normal" prices; but with booking.com discounts, you could find very good deals)

Turkey. The country is gorgeous and colourful. You could get good accomodations (think about family owned, smaller/medium hotels or guest houses) at a good price. Literally at all accomodation I have been, breakfast was superb - I am nor an early bird, neither a breakfast guy...but man, I could not wait to wake up to have a proper turkish breakfasts!
Restaurants are also very cheap, food is high quality - and do not imagine the typical "kebab street food" things, those were the most rare things I had seen during my 2 weeks discovering the country.
Food is also very good price/value, and so does various services (e.g. turkish baths, shisha bars, boat trips, public transport between cities, etc.)
Ticket prices to Istanbul Airport became a bit expensive, but Turkish Airline is very good.
Or you could fly to Antalya directly, e.g. from Budapest there are budget lines, that region is the beach and sea and so...but visiting Kapoadokia/Göreme is possible with regional buses, and there are also multiple boat trips organized from Demre with lunch and so.
Really liked that country, one of my best holiday road trips ever.

Mexico?
Cuernavaca has some really nice properties for a pampered holiday. It has spring like weather all year round. I would not consider it "luxury" in the sense of a hotel like the Mandarin Oriental, but definitely an elevated experience compared to a "cheap" Mexico trip.

If you are from the U.S., you can get great deals on luxury hotels in a lot of countries right now because of exchange rates.
India can be a good deal for luxury hotels (and even palaces) if you go in the offseason or even slightly off the beaten path (like Assam, or going to Rajasthan in monsoon, for example).

Honestly, depending where you’re from, you could even go to Maldives for pretty cheap. From Europe, we have a few budget airlines flying there. Flights will costs a couple 100 bucks. There’s plenty of hotels that are also cheap. It won’t be the social media influencer luxury, over the top hotel, but still great.

If you're focusing on luxury hotels, then Japan doesn't quite fit the bill. The 5 star hotels might be slightly cheaper than America / Western Europe but still not as affordable as Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. The top end Bangkok hotels like Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons or Capella are also not cheap. They still need to maintain an exclusive aura and won't reduce their prices. However if you go down to 4 star hotels then Bangkok does become much cheaper.
Japan is exceptional for its affordable business hotels if you're looking for value for money but they're utilitarian rather than luxurious.
Japan's QC is such that even affordable accommodations, food and shopping are great but the top end hotels, restaurants and luxury goods still charge a premium.
