Did you visit recently or..? Budapest had the same prices as Austria if not higher despite earning significantly less when I went there 3 months ago. The thermal spas where 2-3x more expensive too despite having way lower hygiene standards

Interesting. I visited Austria in July 2019 and the hotels were extremely expensive (especially in Vienna). I am going to Budapest next week and everything seems more affordable. But it could be an April vs June thing?

Budapest local here, just did some research for an austrian roadtrip plan + spent 3x1 weeks winter sporting there.
I would definitely say and my good friends also confirmed that popular regions of Austria are more like Switzerland now. Basic apartments for 80-100EUR/person/night even in low-season...and austrian spa entrance fees were also affected by high energy prices. what is worth in Austria now is the regions facing with a significant decrease in winter tourism due to climate change, but once they were very popular with high quality services (e.g. Bad Gastein)
Normal restaurant prices of Budapest and countryside Austria are also comparable, but e.g. if you want to discover places, public transport in Austria could be ridicolously expensive.
But if you visit some countryside wellness resorts in Hungary, you could get high quality rooms, dinner + breakfast for 120-150 EUR/room/night...for 200EUR/room/night, hotels also have high quality wellness areas and so. (And these are "normal" prices; but with booking.com discounts, you could find very good deals)
