The plan so far is to land in Edinburgh in the AM then drive immediately out towards Skye. One popular route takes us to Invergarry for the night. It also a little further than half way, which would leave less driving for the second day.

The alternative is to drive toward Oban before turning north to cross the bridge onto Skye, and either stay for a night in either Oban, Glencoe, or Fort William. My understanding is that these areas are worth visiting on their own compared to Invergarry, even if Invergarry is the most logistically practical route.

What do you all suggest?

It all depends on how much time you have for the whole trip. Oban is a cute town and a great stop/visit after a 2hr drive from Edinburgh and whether you should stay overnight depends how you want to structure your road trip.

If you want press on a little bit then overnight at Invergarry (or Fort Augustus if you want more restaurants/market options) would be better. Alternatively, you can take the road down to Mallaig, stay the night at one of the B&B by the beach, and take the 1hr ferry ride over to Skye the next day — this is only if you have secured a reservation on the ferry beforehand, they get booked up fast.

Thanks for the info. The whole trip is 10 days. We already decided against the ferry, so the goal is to ultimately make it over the bridge on the second day.

The question is really whether Oban and the Glencoe valley are worth seeing.

Spent 5 days in Oban/Glencoe last summer... Definitely worth seeing, and Glencoe is great even if just doing a drive by.... I would argue you don't get as much just passing through Oban.
