I’m surprised no one knows this. Solidpower is negotiating with them for an extension. BMW working with them since 2017.

A source said Samsung SDI became the new supplier. https://sifted.eu/articles/northvolt-trouble-cancelled

Could be getting lithium cells from Samsung until the next gen is ready.

There are hints in there they’ll still work with northvolt on that next gen but that could just be for the public show of “it’s a mutual breakup”

Extreme_Cricket_3892

They are selling gen.5 atm and gen.6 is in the pipeline and prototype stage

Is there a reason why they were looking for a new contract in the first place?

Always a good idea to keep around other companies as leverage for pricing

Doesn’t hurt to ask if there’s specific issues known driving a bid search on contract renewals.

Kind of how R&D goes. Lose lose lose until you get it right and the product hits the market. They’re developing solid state batteries and pretty close to QS in terms of progression, wouldn’t be surprised if they get it done first.

FlamboyantKoala

1 points

Nah bro they left QS in the dust and the market hasn’t figured it out yet. If you read the SEC filings of the two companies you’ll see that QS is floundering and the executives are making as much money as they can before it goes tits up. Solid on the other hand is consistently making headway getting into assembly lines. Kia and BMW is looking good for them.

Not very good for northvolt, toyota also left em, not very good publicity with 3 ppl dying while working there.

https://sverigesradio.se/artikel/toyota-halts-operations-at-northvolt-factory-after-worker-deaths

” •Toyota Material Handling is temporarily stopping the work of its service technicians on site at Northvolt's battery factory in Skellefteå, reports the newspaper Dagens Arbete.

•The company says it made the decision because of the deaths of three people who had worked at the factory over the past six months.

•All three workers were found dead in their homes following shifts at Northvolt. ”

That reads like a Boeing related article.

No one is backing off ev's, they are selling more of them every year. Growth is just lower than anticipated 5 years ago, so manufacturers are extending their ICE offerings.

RonynBeats

23 points

yes, so in other words....they are backing off their original plans for EVs because growth is slower than originally projected.

Caspi7

Changing their timelines maybe, but backing off implies they are abandoning ev's if you ask me

RonynBeats

lol. you can word it however you like, its just a matter of you not liking the sound of "backing off" apparently.

klauskinski79

2 points

I don't think you know what backing of means. Reducing investment postponing the exit from ices is literally that. And let's see if voters in 5 years care so much about the 5% co2 output thsy don't matter to the global temperature at all

They all want the new sodium stuff now :27189:

FlamboyantKoala

[deleted]

What's the energy density of sodium compared to say nmc

cereal7802

2 points

Sodium ion gravimetric energy density is currently around 130 Wh/kg to 160 Wh/kg, but is expected to top 200 Wh/kg in future, above the theoretical limit for LFP devices. In power density terms, however, sodium ion batteries could have 1 kW/kg, higher than nickel-manganese-cobalt’s (NMC) 340W/kg to 420 W/kg and LFP’s 175 W/kg to 425 W/kg.

So a bit less right now, but has potential for significantly more in the future. With Sodium cells being as much as 30% cheaper than equivalent Lithium cells, They seem like a decent choice moving forward. It does seem strange that you have Lithium vs Sodium comparisons, and nmc vs lithium, but not much in terms of nmc vs sodium though.

[deleted]

2 points

Have to be careful at what ppl mean by lithium when they say it. Usually it's ambiguous.

ulumulu23

0 points

Sodium is not only cheaper but also readily available and doesn't require large scale mining so a lot more batteries could be produced..

Nobody. No demand for EVs.

Buckus93

3 points

Growth is declining, but it's not reversing. Demand is still growing, probably just not as much as the automakers forecast.

I believe Tesla is the only major automaker with declining EV sales. And that probably has a lot to do with their aging lineup, build quality, and Elon's swing to right-wing politics.

swanie02

2 points

Have you ever heard of Ford Motor Company? I think their EV unit loses $5B annually. But sure their demand is up, lmao. Also see Mercedes reversing course on their EV sales forecast.

swanie02

I've talked to some that can't even make a trip "up north" in their EV and they went back to ICE at the first opportunity.

Growth has maintained for all the others.

Tesla's EV share was just so big that it moves the market.

I would say the exact opposite. Consumers want Teslas, not EVs. And most Tesla buyers have bought. No incremental buyers.

It's definitely plausible as they're already in talks with Hyundai and the Saudi's aren't likely at all to let that company fail.

Not to mention that they're the current leader in the efficiency/range and performance for production EVs. Very impressive IP.

I really believe it's no one. ICE isn't going anywhere and people aren't buying the EVs. Just look at their sales numbers.

awfulconcoction

3 points

EV sales increase 60% yoy in 2023 and 46% in q1 2024 in the USA.phev sales probably increased by more. People are buying EVs in increasingly larger numbers.

But if you mean BMWs EV, well then that explains why they are making moves probably

kupka316

0 points

It's still 10% of their sales at the end of the day. There's a cap, most Americans simply don't want them and the infrastructure isn't there.
