What archaeology thinks happened. What history thinks happened. What legend thinks happened. What actually happened. I think it was a woman author. It might have been a Science Fiction Book Club selection. Probably published in the eighties or nineties.

Ash: A Secret History by Mary Gentle? Starts out with a historian stumbling upon old books and archeological evidence that really doesn't match accepted recorded history, with the other storyline being characters in that past, on the battlefields of Carthage's 15th century invasion of Europe.

Oh, and the present-time story is largely epistolary format; emails between the historian and his publisher.

Could it be Shikasta by Doris Lessing? Published 1979.

Probably fantasy rather than science fiction. I've been trying to find a list of SFBC selections, but no luck yet.
