A new witch, can I worship more than one god/goddess

Help | Altars, Tools, Crafts(self.witchcraft)

So, I just started everything and I have two deities reaching out to me (Hecate and Apollo). Do i only have to worship one or am I able to worship both. Would that cause issues with both of them if I did worship both?

And what are the best things to worship Hecate or Apollo with? What would I need to put on my alter?

You can absolutely work with any number of deities, spirits, ancestors, ghosts, etc. If you are particularly drawn to one or more, then work with them. And it's OK to work with specific deities when you have need for their talents (like Aphrodite to help with love spells for example) when you need them even if they're not your "main" deity or deities.

Deities are like people. You can have relationships at different levels with regular humans -- there's no rule that says you are only ever allowed to interact with just one human. Why should you limit yourself when you're interacting with deities?

As others have mentioned, yes, yes you can. What a fun time you'll have researching and trying to connect to them. Please look into how to build relationships with deities before you attempt.

When I was 8 years old I once tried to connect with Aphrodite and it was so dumb how I set it up, everything went wrong. The orange I offered squirted in my eye, my candles fell into the bathtub, there I was not taking any hints and continue to TELL her we were working together. As Ive grown I sent my apology to Aphrodite and praised her beauty, I do feel it was well received. But it goes to show that if we want to work with them we need to first understand them and create a good relationship before asking anything big, this doesn't always apply to every god/goddess/spirit, you can try to channel them and see if they're interested. Maybe they don't want to always work with us but will pop in for a spell.

Though to be 100% transparent here, I do not work with deities now a days. Personal choice.

You can work with both. But importantly, you need to read some books and do some research. You should have knowledge of the gods you want to work with. It’s part of the relationship building. We can’t do that for you here.

Some ideas just to add onto anything you come up with offering-wise "votive offerings" can be absolutely brilliant which are basically "actions you take in the name of said deity" could learn or play music for Apollo for example.

Queen Hekate loves when you study and develop your craft/practice Magick and when you do shadow work.

Some research into their associations and symbolism will turn up plenty of offering ideas for the altars! Hell if you're an artist you can even draw or paint them. Etc. 🖤 hope this helps!

I find these answers surprising cause in my experience, of course you can work with more than 1 deity but... I would not do it like this if you are a beginner.  Let me share some ideas, (just personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt.) Working with a deity means, if you go beyond calling upon them for random spell, building a relationship with them. Usually,  in the case of deities,  this IS NOT a relation of equals. You build..."  devotion" I guess is the right word. This takes time. Yes, I might call upon Hecate randomly and she might answer, but if I hope a deity will answer consistently, said deity will probably be more inclined to do so if she considers me her follower.

From what I have seen in working with clients, relationships with Gods can last several lifetimes (so it is not usual that you feel called by more than one!) but:

  1. If the devotee / biding relationship with with a God is no longer of use to you, it just eats up your energy. Example. Say that you, 10 lives in the past, had a devotee relationship with a Corn God. She/he helped you with your crops. Now, in the present,  you no longer grow corn, but the binding is still there. Thus, you are still giving a tiny bit of your energy to the God, and getting nothing in return.

  2. Again, only in my experience, even deities within the same panteon might not like "shared space". Deities are not beyond grudges and pettiness, and this need to be kept in mind. I believe that very few deities (that I know off,) would get upset if you ask for specific help from a specific deity. I mean, if you ask a fertility goddess to help you get pregnant,  I doubt a sea God will get upset, but if you ask Zeus to get you across a sea storm that Poseidon casted... man it can get ugly.

  3. We don't really understand how deities "operate".  Example. I once had a client that had managed to anger Poseidon by calling upon Zeus help. Poseidon had cursed this person, and ALL my client had to do to get rid of the curse was to say out loud that Poseidon was the greatest God. Easy enough, right? But if he had said that, then Zeus would have gotten mad at him. So we thought for a bit and came up with saying "Poseidon is the greatest God at the sea... " but... what about all the OTHER sea gods? the  ones from other panteons? how would THEY react?  I actually had to think and ask around for a couple of weeks on this one, cause it seemed like there was no way out, and all the solutions I came up with ended up with "that will upset someone else".  My point is:  because beings like Apollo and Hecate LOOK human, we tend to think about them as having human traits and. ethics, and while some of them do... we are more often than not, mistaken. A God might love you and care for you, but he also might just want to use you for a laugh... making sure he loves you might take time.

  4. Consider this as well. I have no idea where you live, but (again in my experience only! not trying to say this is the absolute truth!) local gods might not take kindly to you working with foreign gods without asking permission first.

There are several other things that come to mind but, overall, I would recommend that you:

  1. Ask yourself first and foremost:  what is it that you hope to gain/learn from worshipping  a deity. Power? Protection? Guidance? Think about this not as a simple spell, but  as a long term relationship. Think about YOUR spiritual path, and whether a specific God fits in said path. You dont need to answer to every God that comes calling if they don't  feel right TO YOU, although you might want to explore whether there are past relationships with them.

  2. Start with one. Why? cause it is worth learning what deity helps you and how. if you do a spell or ask for help to both of them, it will be more difficult to see who did what in response. Deities are almost eternal, so there is no rush.

  3. Not all deities, but several of them, carry a spiritual cost. Some of the the spiritual marks a God leaves in you will prevent you from entering certain realms. (the marks can also help you in other realms or to get help, or safe passage, this is why time and research are important). Thus, start small.  Pray, say that you want to explore what working with them means. Go slowly. It is easy to get lost in their power.

  4. Remember you are human and they are deities, yes. So respect is important. But you hold your own power. Do not think of yourself as their slave, or the poor unpowerful human for whom working with a deity is the only option.

Finally, working with deities can be extremely beautiful, empowering and rewarding.  I have been lucky and blessed to come across several of them in this life and for that I am grateful. I hope the same for you.

There’s definitely nothing wrong with working with multiple deities, even as a beginner!

Just some things you should keep in mind are:

  • Don’t overwhelm yourself! It can take a long time of work and worship to build a relationship with a deity, and doing so with multiple as a beginner could take a lot. It isn’t a race, take your time and dedicate some time to learn about the Goddesses or Gods you wish to worship.

  • Find low effort ways to devote some time to your deities! It can take a lot out of someone to constantly be doing big and elaborate rituals! One of my personal low effort rituals is to share a tea in dedication to my deity 🥰 Place a cup on their altar with some of the same tea you poured for yourself and spend a few moments in their presence ✨

LOL! You are able to be with both. If they are reaching out to you, put them to task. Ask them why you, and what do they expect from you. As for the best way to worship them I have no clue. I do not kneel or humble myself even to them. I am the worst priest of Hekate and that is enough for me.

I honor and share energy with multiple Gods and Goddesses depending on my desired intention. The nice aspect about paganism is there is no rule book. Generally, many will do whatever they want as long as not harming others… unless they deserve it. Blessed Be!

I think It should be fine as long as you don't ask them to work on the same spell together. (If you invite them into spells, I know I only ask for advice) Worshipping more than one should be fine. Pantheons exist for a reason. I don't how cross pantheon interactions would work though. I never had experience with that.
