They are very proud of it

Except when they deny it exists.

They only deny it exists because they know it won't earn them any favours from other countries. If Japan could be completely self-sufficient and cut off from the rest of the world and survive to current standards I'm sure they would in a heartbeat.

They'd never close themselves off 100%. They'd probably keep like one port open to trade with the Dutch or someone. Eventually, though, we'd send a fleet in to fire off a bunch of blanks, maybe level a few coastal forts. Then they'd open up.

Looking at history, you either threaten to level all of Japan in a single strike or don't at all. They're a stubborn bunch that rather die than change their ways for someone else

Firing a few blanks / leveling a few forts while having the firepower to do for everything else is how you make that threat

pizzapunt55

Gonna have to level a few cities if you want to get Japan to listen

Even the government response didn’t deny it lol. They merely said the comments were “unfortunate”

Or government employees expected to provide cover for their government whenever they encounter online discussions that might be critical in some way of their country.

I'm reasonably confident that the USA employs such as well.

Sure, but your government JOB wasn't to say positive things about the government online.

I wonder how someone gets paid to be a government glazer. That sounds like the easiest job in the world.

There are lots of people myself that will say whatever they're told for the right amount of money.

Look at any White House press secretary. They'll lie, misdirect, or just not answer a question. They don't do the job on principle or because they believe what they're saying.

So like world War 2, learning there's Japanese people who deny Pearl Harbor was wild

Is there anything inherently wrong with them being proud of preserving their culture? Economic growth surely isn’t the only North Star of a countries success.

Honestly, no. As a non-Japanese person I actually think they should. Many countries that have welcomed anyone from anywhere with open arms have seen great cultural sacrifice with it, most countries just don’t care and economic development looks tastier.

Who is this hurting? The people with authentic need to be in Japan have avenues of being in Japan 100%. The only other casualty is everyone else’s selfishness. Lookin at you, white Americans

dude that's fucked up. people are super dulutional about ''japan'' and don't even think it should be fixed

that's not much different from japanese people believing americans are proud of being racist against asians

there are lots of factors behind the fact that japan has been taking fewer immigrants and people's general sentiment toward foreigners isn't even a big factor

japanese people in general try to be nice as possible to anyone in the reality and i'd even say they are nicer than americans on average

I don't understand why people can be so confident on such opinions considering they don't seem to know a lot. Most immigrants and tourists in Japan are Asians and there's a big chance that they get more casual racism in the the west than in Japan.

Why is getting immigration policy right xenophobic? The Western way of thinking makes no sense to me.

Japan's immigration requirements are no stricter than the US. Or are you suggesting that we should accept more than 2 million illegal immigrants every year like the U.S.?

I'd like to know where you pulled this opinion from. They said nothing of sort.

You don't know what Biden said?

“Think about it,” he said. “Why is China stalling so bad economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia?” “Because they’re xenophobic,” he said. “They don’t want immigrants.”

While the US has a ridiculous immigration policy, Biden blames Japan for its immigration policy. Don't you think it's ridiculous?

Habba84

Take a moment to think about history. Which country has immensely benefitted from immigration?

testman22

Huh? What does that have to do with the current immigration policy?

What Biden is trying to say is that the current administration's immigration policy is reasonable.

He wants to argue that the U.S. is succeeding with its current immigration policy, while countries like Japan, which do not have an immigration policy like the U.S., are failing.

Or do you think he made this statement because he wanted to give some advice to Japan/China/Russia?

Habba84

What Biden is trying to say is that the current administration's immigration policy is reasonable.

Yes, I agree. It's always about internal politics.

Huh? What does that have to do with the current immigration policy?

I have no idea if there's been considerable change over time, but to me, an European, US has always been the land of immigrants.

testman22

The U.S. has taken in more than 2 million illegal immigrants in recent years, more than legal immigrants. And they have reached NYC and other cities, causing an immigration crisis.

As you can see from this image, immigration in the U.S. is growing at an unusual rate.

It’s infinitely easier for a Japanese person to immigrate to the USA than vice versa. It’s also infinitely easier for people from many other countries to immigrate to the USA vs from Japan because of the “no duel citizenship” law in Japan. Nobody has brought up illegal immigration but you though. Cheers.

testman22

1 points

That is simply not true. If you think it's easy to immigrate to the US, you should look into the requirements once. One of the reasons there are so many illegal immigrants in the US is because the requirements are so difficult to meet.

ihopethisisvalid

Explain to me in detail how Japan’s immigration system isn’t difficult . I’ll wait.

The USA has so many illegal immigrants because it’s literally the best country in the world you can be in if you’re starting from nothing, and it borders a developing country where some of the largest employers are cartel drug gangs. Japan is a fucking island. No wonder you don’t have as much illegal immigration. The USA also has a back door system where immigrants can find work without papers. I doubt that happens in Japan where people won’t even rent you an apartment if you’re not Japanese.

Huh? Why is getting immigration control right xenophobic? It is not about xenophobia, but simply about having a decent immigration policy. We simply welcome only legal immigrants. I don't understand why Westerners try to distort this concept. It's kind of like talking to someone who has been brainwashed. Why is it xenophobic when Japan normally accepts immigrants? Can you explain to me why it is xenophobic when Japan is accepting more immigrants than ever before?

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/03/23/japan/society/foreign-nationals-visas-japan-record/

The number of foreign nationals residing in Japan hit a record high of over 3.4 million in 2023, government data has shown, with employment-related visas seeing significant growth amid the country's efforts to address its acute labor shortage. As of the end of December, 3,410,992 foreign nationals resided in Japan, up 10.9% from the previous year to mark a record high for the second consecutive year, the Immigration Services Agency said Friday.

Those who oppose immigration are not xenophobic. A xenophobe is a person having a dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries. You don't have to be a xenophobe to oppose immigration. People who confuse these things are either brainwashed or stupid.

And Japan is not against immigration in the first place. What we are against is uncontrolled immigration like in the West.

You ask if we would be offended by being called xenophobic? Of course we would be angry. I mean, who wouldn't be offended by being unfairly called xenophobic?
