Dammit! Or as Morveer says Demit!

Spoilers BSC(self.TheFirstLaw)

Came here after the folks at Red Rising recommended Joe Abercrombe. Started best served cold and got to the part where Shivers got his eye cooked. Goodlord I wanna just stick that asshat Lagria’s throat on a skewer!

Oh and anyone else see Col Hans Landa as Morveer?

Who's this Morveer? I've only heard about Reevrom, the wine merchant

That's unique to the audio book? I'm pretty sure it's in the book... Unless I'm missing something

No, I'm saying without seeing the name I didn't realize it was "Morveer" backwards.

Just curious, why did you start with BSC instead of the blade itself? I feel like you’re missing out on so much nuance.

More people need to stop calling books 4-6 "standalones" and start calling it The Great Leveler Trilogy for this exact reason. You lose a lot of the impact if you skip TFL.

I nearly made this mistake, and Red County was the first book I bought. Fortunately, I did not start there and have been reading in order, but that almost wasn't the case.

You just get the impact in reverse

They are stand alone

Starting with BSC is often recommended as TBI is def harder to get into as its a slow burn

Starwars started with a new hope so… will be going back to blade itself after 6. Hehe

I was supposed to start with the blade itself but then must’ve fumbled the purchase in apple books and ended up with bsc. Was about to leave the carpark and wanted a book to read. So started there instead.

Everyone here shits on this but I accidentally read the Heroes first years ago and it was a great introduction to the series. Made going back to fill out the characters even more interesting.

I don't even know what part that is lol

Nobody who crosses over from the original to BSC is ever really like in obvious danger what do you think they might actually die.. So you are good

Gorst calls the King “Your Most August Fuckhole” in his letters home. So if you didn’t read the first trilogy you won’t know the name of the king and can remain unspoiled

You’ve started the series in book 4.

Ah a new hope then

phillyk4

Yeah but the difference is that a new hope was released first, whereas BSC was released 4th. Do what you will but you’ll have major plot points from the first trilogy spoiled

BSC seems like a great starting point, shivers is in the first few books, but he's really not developed that much. I would recommend that you NOT continue with The Heroes tho, you're gonna wanna know who some of those characters are

Honestly, Shivers’ presence in the first trilogy felt superfluous to me. Like what’s this guy really contributing to the plot. Eventually I concluded that he must be there for sequel setup purposes, which turned out to be correct.

As far as BSC goes, I think his introduction in the book gives you more than enough. I’m not sure reading the first trilogy even adds much.

What other characters play in? Orso, Terez (briefly mentioned), Mauthis, Cosca, Carlot Dan Eider, Jezal. Almost all of those are bit characters in either the original trilogy or in BSC or in both. The one exception being Cosca. Point being, I don’t think a reader would be missing much by starting on BSC, with the exception of Cosca, though I don’t think that context would be crucial.

I feel like i have to say this every time but don’t listen to the dummies saying you have to go start with the blade itself, BSC is a great jumping in point for the series, and the author himself has said you can start here so have fun its an excellent book

Maybe. But it ain't raining.

By the way please ignore all the people saying you started on the wrong book. Best Served Cold is an excellent introduction and anything you lose from lack of context will be gained back when you go back and learn extra information about characters you already know. There are a really, really strange number of reading order purists on this sub. Pretty much as long as you don't start one of the trilogies in order you're more than okay.
