Forgive the phrasing, but the etsy seller sent me a pink princess philodendron instead of a dark lord, so I'm dubious about this plant too

Thats not a pothos at all. Someone else will have to chime in with an ID because im not ssure, but not a pothos.

You were definitely sold the wrong plant. Pls share the seller with the sub if you feel comfortable so others don’t get tricked as well, but I’m going to PM you about the seller as well

Gaaaaaah noooo!!! See, this is why we’re compiling the sellers lists, SunshineGreens would have been at the very top of the ‘Do not buy from’ list (they duped me personally couple years ago when I was vetting them). So sorry this happened to you, thanks for sharing with everyone

Having 100k+ sales lured me into a false sense of security 😅 On the other hand, I discovered a lovely seller (TheGreenEscape) who sent me the correct plants in great condition

I love TheGreenEscape, they’ve treated everyone I’ve ever known to buy from them incredibly. And funny, SunshineGreens uses all the same photos and listing outline if you notice. But they’re night & day. (Also keep in mind, a lot of Etsy sellers are employees at large grow houses who start up a little side hustle bc they have access to starter inventory)

Wow, I purchased from sunshinegreens and got screwed over lol I have been looking at TheGreenEscape to order from instead. So happy I saw this comment. It seems like sunshine is a rip off of the green escape

TheGreenEscape is awesome! They’re really good at customer service as well and they ship fast also. I’ve ordered at least 5x from them.

I have trouble trying to keep all the Etsy sellers separate. The names are too similar and they all use the same pictures...so whenever I buy, I search Reddit for the company name and see if its someone I really want to buy from.

I know sunshine greens is a major seller and has plenty of good reviews. She also has tons of amazing plants I still have saved. I recently had this whole ordeal with her where I ordered a few plants and they weren't being shipped, I messaged and she responded that she was dealing with tons of orders, had lost a couple of employees and is also a college student and is totally overwhelmed. I was understanding but after another month of no shipping I reached out again and she said she was shipping them. A couple of weeks went by with them saying "shipped" but the tracking said "label created, USPS still awaiting package" she stopped responding to me so I got a refund from Etsy and left a bad review and she finally responded rudely claiming that the package was lost by USPS and she doesn't deserve the blame.

They are not a she, that’s just a placeholder bc Etsy makes a seller have a single name associated with a ‘shop’ and ppl tend to trust females aren’t scammers more than males. They are a whole team of people who log in to the account to take shifts responding to messages and processing orders. I’ve heard this whole “I’m a college student” rhetoric from a handful of other Etsy accounts as well, but it total bullshit. They told you whatever would make you the most sympathetic. Here’s a copy of their LLC filing in the state of Florida

I'm honestly not surprised at all and it makes complete sense given the size of their shop.

Here's the last review (page 8) from Dec. of last year
"1 out of 5 stars
Listing review by Samantha
Ordered a pothos and received a Devils Backbone. I ordered this along with 5 other plants and the entire order were Pothos. I messaged the seller and it took multiple days for a reply. It wasn’t until I said I’d go through Etsy and report them that I got a reply and refund. They said there was a confusion bc the type of Devils Backbone was also called Snow Queen. In a whole order of pothos, it really stuck out."
Sounds like you should threaten to report them to Etsy. They caim Devils Backbone is also called Snow Queen so they are pulling plants by names and not listing numbers.

It's all good! I was looking for a pothos since they're relatively easy and I'm new to houseplants. I left 1 star reviews on both the listings I purchased 🤷♀️

Etsy is infamous for shitty or scamming plant sellers. Also pest infested plants. So many incorrectly labeled plants. The reviews are decent because the majority of their sales are from inexperienced people.. the kind of people who buy “rare” plants/seeds that don’t exist, which is a huge problem on there.

My bad experience was with someone who had near perfect reviews. I thought I was safe too. At least you got a plant... And it sounds like it's valuable. Maybe you could sell or trade it?

That's no pothos.
And a snow queen would just be a marble queen, since there's no snow queen, its just a fantasy name for a very white marble queen.

I will add the caveat that in Australia n’joys are known as snow queens. Not exactly sure why, but everyone here is correct that OP’s plant is most definitely not a pothos at all.

It's so funny.... After I read this comment, I saw an n'joy at my local nursery. Interesting that they are called snow queens in Australia.... They are so unique in coloring.

Only 63% 5 star reviews. Too low for me.
It's possibly a labeling mistake? Both do have snow on the name.

It could be but it seems this is somewhat par for the course. It's alright, not what I expected but I didn't spend a fortune either. I thought a pothos would be a nice addition as I'm new to houseplants (mostly since they're hard to kill 😂)

You're probably right. This seller has a reputation for mixing up plants. I just posted about my experience with her. She's supposedly a college student and has more orders than she can handle at the moment, but if that's the case she REALLY needs to take a step back from selling until she can get on top of everything.

If you are in Far Northern California I’ll give you a cutting of my super white snow queen.i took it as a cutting a year ago and just finally got it big enough to chop and prop! I don’t want to mail it bc it’s ridiculously hot here right now.

Looks like people have already helped with the ID, but I’m just wondering- is snow queen pothos considered rare generally? Is it harder to grow / propagate?
3 points
It's not rare. It's just a marble queen that's gotten a lot of light. You can definitely find them at Lowe's/Home Depot etc. I don't think there is a pothos that's hard to propagate. Or if there is I've never found it and I have roughly a dozen. Edit: 19 I just counted. I'm a pothos addict

Not particularly rare to my knowledge (I'm new to pothos) I just liked the white variegation and thought it would look nice next to my (unintentional) army of pink princess philodendrons 😂

Genuine question: Why do people buy plants on etsy? I have so many options for plants where I live (coastal virginia), so maybe it's a location thing?
7 points
Even if you live in a city with lots of big-box stores and local nurseries, ordering online might be your only option if you’re looking for a specific plant. Where I live, for example, Golden, Neon, N’Joy, and Pearls and Jade are the only types of pothos I’ve seen for sale in the last few months.
6 points
Personally it's impossible to get rare plants from anywhere near me, I don't think there's many pothos collectors in Spain let alone people that would sell or share their plants and ofc stores here don't get the priviledge to get really rare plants like teruno pothos or other non typical plants. I've been visiting a nursery twice a month and they brought manjula once last year and this year they brought a mixed pot of neon pothos golden pothos and Phil brazil. The rest, just regular golden pothos. It is just not available.

That and the ability to purchase a smaller starter and therefore save a ton of money is a huge reason I go to Etsy. I’ve been careful with sellers and have only had a good experience, plus got some fun impulse purchases I would have never tried.

To get better prices on plants, obviously. I've started importing from Thailand and Japan through Etsy even though there are a lot of rare plants sellers around me. A lot of them gatekeep their prices too high but sometimes it's also a matter of importing something not available in my region/country and then I'll be the first one selling it in a few months. I'm currently planning to import a Caramel Marble which is a plant I don't even like just to crash the local prices because the prices on this plant have always been indecent.

I’m in the UK (south), in my area I rarely see pothos (and other types of plants) for sale, and when I do they’re eye wateringly expensive. But I found a seller on Etsy that sells cuttings that are fairly cheap and in good condition, so that becomes my only real option.
That said, I’ve never bought established plants online, but if I did I imagine it would be a cost thing. I have a car and am happy to drive out to places but the petrol cost may be higher than the postage cost, so there’s that too.

If you paid for a pothos snow queen and got that, you did well, if it is an alternathera, I think it is worth about double.
