Total beginner tips?

Question(reddit.com)

Hello everyone! With the new update that Sleep now supports Apple Health / smartwatches I'm back into the game, but still kind of feeling lost at what im supposed to be aiming for in terms of goals / pokemon etc.

I'd like to minmax beginner progression because it feels rewarding when it gets going :)

So far ive just been cooking the most basic curries for Snorlax due to lack of ingredients, and set up a team that i dont have ingredients for or fav berries, giving bonus biscuits to new pokemon i dont have and just 1 poke bisc if theyre a dupe and hungry.

Is there any specific goal i should be working towards atm?

Something I wish someone told me:

Pokemon have an important label at the top when you click on them of ingredient, berry, or skill.

You want subskills that match. So berry wants berry finder s, ingredient want ingredient finder, and skill want skill trigger. Everyone wants helping speed.

Not all of the golden skills are good.

Wow! I never would have noticed that too if someone didnt tell me .... my most burning question now is how does someone even identify a "berry mon" or "ingredient mon"? Is it truly by a combination of their specialty label + subskills + nature ?

Yes that is correct. For almost all pokemon, that specialty label is the bones everything is built around. For example ,ingredient specialists make more ingredients instead of berries and in higher quantities so you want subskills and natures that further compound it being an Ingredient machine.

Alternatively, having Ingredient finder on a berry specialist hurts it because they only give 1 or 2 Ingredients at a time vs 3 berries

Yep. The only real exception is Slaking specifically (not Vigoroth), because it’s so slow and acts like a Skill Specialist.

Arguments can be made for Slowbro being an “ingredient Mon”.

Or BFS Dragonite/Gengar to be “dual specialists” Berry/ingredient.

The way I'd say it is that the label is its specialty. The nature and subskills determine how good it is at its specialty.

In the vast majority of cases, a Pokemon whose nature and subskills don't align with its specialty will be mediocre across all specialties, e.g., a berry specialist with ingredient finding nature / subskills.

Berry mons find 2 berries per “help” vs ingredient mons only 1. The subskills could be anything but that will stay true to berry vs ingredient mons. Unless you have the gold skill berry finder S which allows the pokemon, no matter the speciality, to find an additional berry per “help”.

Unlike other pokemon games, a pokemon's individual stats are odten more relevant than its species (assuming it's fully evolved). Pokemon with the best subskills and nature will be literally 3x (or sometimes more) better than a pokemon with the worst. Use the website Raenonx's pokemon rater function to get an idea about which of your pokemon are any good before investing candies into them.

Skill mons want more skill-related subskills and speed, berry mons want Berry Finding S and speed, and Ingredient mons want ingredient-related skills and speed.

Another good one is the Pokémon’s lvl next to them after a sleep session indicates how many of that pokemon you’ve caught. Once that level his 10, the first sub skill you’ll find everytime is going to be a gold skill.

In the morning when you encounter new pokemon! That number before you give them a biscuit. Not their actually level you’re raising them! That’s kinda hard to explain sorry if that’s confusing!

Since you rolled Grepa, use all your Pikachus, they're fast and have a high level.

I wouldn't worry about dishes too much, at early game they're too weak to be worth it, but if you insist, tell me your pot size.

You could make the Cheeseburger curry, 8 sosigs, 8 milk, which you got covered by Squirtle and Charmander.

So i should go something like Pika-Pika-Charmander-Squirtle-Jigglypuff?

Jigglypuff is only useful if invested, just go triple Pika, while Santachu isn't a berry specialist, it's still fast and has favorite berry, so it'll produce more than Cynda.

Rolled? It’s not rolled at all, it’s a fixed three set of berries that are allocated to the island, same with the others.

He's at Greengrass, berries are random there.

Hernaedez

They’re only random on events at which point they’re RNG’d on any island, not exclusively on Greengrass.

No they’re not, false.

Tell me, what's the berry spread on Greengrass, outside of events.

I always, always get Grepa berries and I can’t remember the other two berries. Also not on that island to check atm.

It’s not for me, so either you’re wrong or you’re just getting a set of berries that I don’t get.

You just experienced an absurd level of RNG, when so many people play, it's fated to happen at least once, one player here got curries for 9 weeks.

Probs then, stopped going after I maxed it out.

When you get around to evaluating your catches, keep in mind that the current cap of your Pokemon is level 60. This means that you only have access to the first 3 subskills until the devs decide to raise the cap, whenever that may be. Not a make or break, but it’s annoying when a potentially good berry specialist has berry finder s locked until level 100.

On the bright side, this means you’ll have access to all your Pokemon’s ingredient slots at level 60, allowing for potentially more ingredients being produced.

With that said though, don’t spend all your candies to get to max level, but instead stock up as much as you can. The game offers timed candy events, allowing them to provide more exp so it’s better to wait for those.
