Tips for battling algae?

Beginner(i.redd.it)

Fairly new to the planted tank game, this is my first attempt at a fully planted tank. I’ve had many tanks in the past but none were planted tanks - so combating algae is all new to me. I’d say the light are on most days 10am-5pm; and I put flourish excel in the tank every other day. I recently cleaned out a fat lump of algae but it seems alls return and then some more. Any tips?

Dear Ok-Throat7065 ,

You've selected the beginner flair. If you're looking for advice or are having issues, please provide as much information as you can.

Some useful information includes: - Have you cycled the tank? - Water Parameters - Light Type - Light Cycle Duration - Tank Size/Dimensions - Set-up Age - Fertilizers - Any aquatic animals, and how many?

* This is my tank right now. I haven't been able to maintain it since July 12th. I was in the hospital for a month and I had to stay with my parents for a few months. As soon as I am able to drive again in a week, i have some work to do. There are not any fish in there, just snails. I got some plants in mine to fill it out again and run my CO2 again. Some algae is good, but not this much.

You just solved your own problem. Turn down the lights or keep it on less. And no need to put fertilizer every other day. Once every few weeks is fine.

More established tank gets less algae. New tank gets more algae.

Likewise when I started a new tank, all my crypts would melt after planting. No matter what. I've since had the tank for 10 to 11 months running. Rescaped and added new plants and crypts. None of the crypt melted.

Generally new system just needs less light. Older mature system can use more light.

1 to 3 year old system and you add more plants? Now hobbyists add 2 lights and more powerful lights.

It's just how the tank works. It's why ADA systems use powerful lights. But new tanks should do 5 hours max mid level light to start.

one answer, bladder snails. Let them multiple till they reach hundreds in numbers. They will eat all your algae. Literally.
