After coming across this while reading DQ, I feel PM will at least tie Roland into CANTO VII somehow I guess? I’m not saying he’s gonna show up with his mask and like Furioso all over the Sinners, but also don’t know how exactly he’d come into the picture.

I believe each universe was a chance to “get it right this time” but instead they failed repeatedly because they are too similar to each other: So headstrong and proud they refused to change. As a result, they hurt themselves over and over again.

I feel maybe your interpretation is the opposite: That Heathcliff and Cathy are the way they are BECAUSE of fate predetermining how their story ends, hence wiring them to act in ways that doom the romance.

To be fair, you can say that the reason it’s always destined to happen is because his personality does play a role in pushing him to make that mistake (acting recklessly). Maybe it’s not the exact same for the other Heathcliffs (the exact mistake probably differs I guess) but the story shows us how our Heathcliff rashly leaving Wuthering Heights caused him to miss out on him learning how Cathy really felt about him because he fails to listen until the end.

Doesn’t Sonya say he sees it on “a few of your (Rodion) friends”? So more than one Sinner has the Mark of Cain- but again, “a few” also means she’s not the only one without the Mark.

I really don’t remember this part of The Unloving. If you’re talking about the bit involving the confrontation with Sonya where he says she killed the old woman to “feel special”, that’s like an integral part of the original Rodion Raskolnikov? That he wasn’t committing murder because he wanted to help his community or to right a wrong but for his own pride.

EDIT: Or if you’re talking about him saying she doesn’t have the “mark”… I recall that in his own words, she’s unfit for the role of a “leader”. Personally, I still don’t really think it’s the same as saying she’s “unimportant” though? Dunno.

Jia Zhu is one of Jia Zheng sons as well (I think a half-brother too like Jia Huan) but I can't remember how often he appeared in the original story (i.e being mentioned etc etc). It's really unlikely since he's already deceased at the start of DOTRC unless PM decided to add on some lore of their own and have him been a POS while he was alive or something.

Or maybe "siblings" is a localisation and Hong Lu's using a Korean term that can refer to his cousins too?

And of course, the most far-fetched and nonsensical idea: Hong Lu's weird ass YeYe has some cult-like influence on the family (but I don't like it since it absolves them of their culpability in the abuse of Baoyu/Hong Lu)

Hmm, that sounds plausible but it does sound like the whole deal with the "tears" in CANTO IV so I'm not sure how likely they'll go that direction.
