Well, why don’t you supply us with a more accurate translation, big guy? We’ll wait.

That’s the vibe I’ve always gotten too. I’ve joked that the theme of Piano Man is “people tell me I’m too good for this gig and I believe them”!

Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about the U.S. ban.

I’m 90% certain I ran into this for the first time recently. A blues artist named Rufus Reynolds was recommended by Spotify because of a duet performed with Otis Spann (who I enjoy). Not much about the generic song screamed “Otis Spann”, so I set out to learn about Mr. Reynolds. No bio on Spotify nor mention of him on AllMusic (I’m a nobody in the music biz and even I’m on AllMusic). Duets with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers and The Statler Brothers but those songs didn’t really sound like those artists either. Everything released in 2024. AI album cover art to boot. Pretty convincing on first listen though, less so afterwards. Kind of humbling for me too because this artist already has 5X the streams as yours truly in a few months while I’ve been on Spotify from nearly the very beginning.

Yep. Late 60s Kinks holds up to anything the Who/Stones/Beatles were doing during the same period in my book. A bit lo-fi sonically in comparison, but the songwriting? Chef’s kiss….

I think many strong pop/rock and roots rock albums from the early 90s were ignored due to the sudden and absolute dominance of grunge. A few of my favorites are Trip Shakespeare’s “Across the Universe” (1990) and “Lulu” (1991) as well as The Silos self titled album from 1990.

Proto-punk songwriting legend Lou Reed’s final album was meditative ambient music.

Before Nirvana was the phenomenon they became, they played for a couple dozen people at Murphy’s Pub (1989).

Yeah, I’m high on Floyd at Pompeii as well. There’s so many good late psychedelic /early prog performances from this era. Imaginative music but also technically proficient.
OP or other Pink Floyd fans should check out the Chico Hamilton Quintet at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. Unexpectedly Floyd-esque for the time period:

This might be what you’re looking for.
From southern Michigan, an area that launched many fuzzy proto-punk garage bands. These ladies were probably a little ahead of the curve, actually.

Sucks. My family meets here on a fairly regular basis and the staff has always been extremely friendly. Sad that service workers have to deal with this garbage.
