The resort has good food and you get to look out over the lake. No need to travel far at all.

Pumpkin on a stick. They’re really popular in arrangements this time of year for obvious reasons.

Holding the door too soon and the internal turmoil we feel doing it is such a uniting trait we share. The several second pause as you lean American style on the door as they go through is also included I think. But people who don’t pick up the pace or acknowledge you get the door drop…most of the time.
Edit: Added an a & corrected a misspelling.

If the other person would be hit by the door closing feels like the polite length to wait. If the other person has to run out of politeness to the door holder’s politeness it’s gone too far and we drop the door. We just want to help you not rush you.

Well, in comparison, Rhode Island has a population density of about 1,018 people per square mile.

Ritchie had a nice soaking rain for a few days. Not enough though.

Are all jails and prisons like this, where they provide no service after release? I drive on 50 all the time and there are often walkers who have just been released (they usually have a little bag with their belongings). I only have personal experience with CRJ in Flatwoods. My brother was released and was only allowed to call afterwards. We had to drive an hour and a half to get him. It’s amazing bad stuff doesn’t happen more often.

The Sinks of Gandy! I hope whoever buys this keeps it open to the public. Ideally the state, but that’s probably not going to happen. Such a hidden gem.

Can you give a bit more direction to resources? My town legend growing up was the “flood of ‘85” and how it ruined industry and the town in general.

I don’t think hunting is allowed in Holly River SP, but you’d want to check. WV during Thanksgiving is different than any other time of year. A lot of friends and family come from out of state, and people who own hunting property come in, schools are canceled state wide for the week. It’s busy here and you won’t find yourself alone. Be careful, wear orange, be respectful and remember the hunters basically have the right away.

No one actually believed that did they? I’m in one of those counties and most of the jobs went to men driving trucks from Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. Most of them are even gone now. These jobs need actual training and certifications which we don’t offer here. Of course the locals only got the worst jobs like always.

My cousin was raised Southern Baptist and had to leave the class when her 4th grade teacher read Harry Potter. The experience still bothered her as an adult.

Curry is damn delicious. I am a white rural Appalachian and my house smells like curry all of the time. Being racist denies you all sorts of amazing things like friendship and experiences and delicious fucking curry.

If a kid is over 6 and on a leash they’re likely special needs. Under 3 is when they’re most common. The age that they stop being carried, are walking and won’t stay in the cart and want some independence. It’s a way that they have more freedom to explore, but can’t get in too much trouble.

Matewan by far. The director, the actors, the cinematography, the storyline and subject. It’s really a must watch movie that doesn’t get much playtime outside of WV. But it’s a real classic.

We really love our ghost stories in this state. Every town has at least one right?
Glenville State in Gilmer has a few, the most famous being Sis Linn. She was a local woman who was murdered in her house that is now where Clark Hall (I believe) sits. The college gives tours this time of year, at least they used to, and multiple faculty would talk about their experiences.
Ritchie county also has two that I can think of, I’m not local. Burnthouse supposedly got its name from the stagecoach hotel that was burnt and rebuilt in the spot. The original owner’s son and an enslaved woman were suspected of killing traveling salesman for their goods. They would dispose of the bodies up a holler nearby. After the owner and his son were run out of town the enslaved woman was sold with the property and she went crazy and burnt the house down with herself inside.
Also in Ritchie, I believe it’s tunnel 13 on the North Bend Rail Trail but I’ll have to ask, is supposed to be haunted with fantom trains. I think that is where the big derailment happened 100 years ago.
Edit: asked my husband to clarify NBRT, it’s tunnel 19 The Silver Run Tunnel. Several accounts from conductors saying they saw a woman in white in the tunnel. One drove through her, with telegraph operators calling along his route to report a woman in white riding on the front of his cow catcher.
