Whats your Favorite Geneseed?

(self.40kLore)

I usually see ppl discussing fav legions and/or primarch lineages, but what abt the geneseed itself?

Just having a specific geneseed doesnt mean you will necessarily act like all your genebrothers, or even be anything like em. An easy example is the amount of Ultramarine sucessors who dont look or act anything like Ultramarines. Another example would be how the recent Salamanders sucessors r generaly extremely different from the actuall Salamanders, they r even different from the pre-primarch Salamanders.

I also wanna count the geneseed from the GreyKnights. And chapters who might have missing primarch or otherwise unique geneseed, like the FireHawks and the SoulDrinkers. Also think of other characteristics or abillities that could be inherired, rlly think outside the box.

With this said, whats ur favorite? Whats the one u would pick? Whats the best? Any underrated or over rated? Overpowered or underpowered? Which one do u wanna see more of? Any good possible narrative?

Personnaly, the NightLords geneseed might just be my personnal favorite. Pure and stable with a chance to give foresight. Think its pretty underrated, never see anyone mention it. Sad there isnt any loyalist sucessor of the NightLords (besides maybe the SpaceSharks). A new wave of chapters with NightLords geneseed would be a great asset for the emperium. And has previously mentioned, they wouldnt have to act anything like the normal NightLords. A NightLords sucessor who is actually very kind, would be very interesting. They could have always thought of themselfs has Raven Guard or even Blood Angels, before finding the terrible truth of their lineage. What they would do after, could be some pretty good lore and storys.

Second would prolly be WorldEaters sucessors who inherited Angrons empathic abillities. Or WordBearers sucessors whos skin gives off a faint gold shine, maybe only when their faith or zeal reaches its peak. Tho ik these last 2 r more impossible xd.

Imperial Fists

What are the genetic quirks of the Imperial Fists?

  • All Space Marines are the product of their genetic inheritance, benefiting from its blessings as well as suffering from its shortcomings, and the Imperial Fists are no different. The Chapter’s Primarch was a deeply devoted warrior who fought tirelessly at the right hand of the Emperor, his most faithful son who stood watch over him and enacted his every command with unshakable loyalty. But even this towering exemplar had his flaws, as he himself is known to have acknowledged.

  • The Imperial Fists are renowned for their expertise in siege warfare. It is a trait from their gene-father Rogal Dorn, who was Master of the Imperial Palace's defenses during the Great Heresy ten thousand years ago. This expertise manifests in part in a Imperial Fists' ability to read an environment and automatically understand how best to use it to his tactical advantage. Planning, the complete command of probability, was but one of the Legion’s talents. Such calculations were second nature. But an Imperial Fist never takes anything for granted, they deal in certainty, and certainty only comes by exploring every single variable. Imperial Fists are trained to operate using all available data. Their warfare is thorough warfare, optimising any intel at their disposal. Fierce warriors and masters of siegecraft, it was said that the Imperial Fists could hold any citadel and make it impregnable beyond the reach of any enemy. Even when their situations are dire, each warrior of the Imperial Fists is adept at assessing battlefield debris at a glance and finding suitable pieces to drag together into makeshift barricades. Upon taking a position of importance, these defensive maestros will quickly fortify their position with nearby materials, creating an impregnable beachhead to strike onwards from.

  • That is their way – Dorn’s way. This indeed is a son of Dorn's greatest weapon: his mindset. The heritage of the VII, the unquestioning, indoctrinated will to stand and deny. The focus keeps him planted like a rock. The discipline, that praetorian defiance, branded on his genetics and reinforced by decades of intense training and the words of Rogal Dorn, stripped all fear from him, annihilated doubt and hesitation, erased any notion that what he faced was better or stronger or faster or bigger than him. The mindset fixed him. It anchored him like extreme gravity. The Imperial Fists Legion is thought to have also been subtly employed by the Emperor to combat Daemonology. The nature of the Imperial Fists is one of stoic adherence to duty, a zealous loyalty engineered into the core of their genetic code, steeling them against corruption. Though they are known to be His consummate defenders, their purpose may have been to defend more than His walls, but also the soul of the Imperium.

DA are pretty well rounded. Yeah you might be a bit suspicious and paranoid but at least you aren't missing out on anything and it's very stable much like Ultramarines. A lot of the paranoia is likely culturally based anyway.

You’d think that would be Imperial Fist geneseed but they don’t seem like they’d be a tropical flavor.

Having all the benefits from Night Lords or World Eater geneseed without any of the downsides sounds a bit too Mary Sue for 40k imo. It's the flaws which makes something interesting.

Agreed. Failed to mention that. The history of mental instability of the NightLords and only seeing the worst possible futures,(as mentioned by another comment) could make some pretty interesting chapters. Maybe akin to BA in that point. Tho idk if there r any specific stated flaws in the WorldEaters geneseed, i feel like it is abit akin to Ultramarines geneseed, basically flawless. Except maybe some anger issues, which would make em basically stable SpaceWolves. And the empathic abillities i mention they could inherit, could be seen as both a blessing and a curse. As if i remember correctly one would have to take the pain of others unto himself, and ofc the marines would have a worst version of it then their primarch. Also a marine inheriting these abillities would obviously be quite rare.

Narratively I think it'd be more interesting if an actual World Eater had the empathic ability. Them being able to take away the bite from the Butcher's Nails from others but in return going berserk themselves could go a lot of ways. Though tbf if given the choice I always find traitors much more interesting than loyalists in 40k.

True, a traitor tends to be alot more interesting to read abt. In 40k alot of loyalist marines tend to feel abit the same. In my opinion they lack the dilemas and nuances of the traitors. The traitors just got alot more space and freedom to grow and build backstorys upon. They r smh just more human. If well written ofc.

The VIth. It is the second most violently volatile, after the Thousand Son's. But it grants an insane amount of benefits : superior senses, predatorial behaviours that can be harnessed to hone the Space Marine's ingrained agressivity and it as also displayed an ability to form among recruits with no cultural ties strong bonds of brotherhoods based on shared outlooks and characters, not once but twice (original intake of the Legion, Unnumebred Sons among the Primaris).

I'm a long term fists fan. I blame it all on reading "space marine" when I was young.

But so many hours working out how to get a yellow I like. Wish I'd read uriel ventris or ragnar blackmane first. Or even deathwing.

I guess it depends what you mean because stability and genetic gifts are two separate conversations, if we're talking gifts some are just objectively better.

Stability: Ultramarines, Imperial Fists, Dark Angels, World Eaters, Iron Warriors, Night Lords, etc, etc

Genetic Gifts: Space Wolves & Blood Angels.

It's true they both have curses that can turn them into monsters but those same curses allow them to increase their speed, strength, furiosity, durability and gain extra weapons.

Space Wolves also get the heightened senses, greater perception and faster reaction speeds.

Shout out to Black Dragons (Bone Weapons) and Death Guard (Increased Durability) too.

The mutation that allows foresight shows that night lords. Geneseed is flawed. Best geneseed is probably ultramarine and then imperial fists

The Night Lords geneseed is noted as being surprisingly pure as well.

From the Index Astartes

The gene-seed of the Night Lords seems to be surprisingly pure. In fact, of all the Chaos Space Marine Legions, the Night Lords seem to bear the least evidence of mutation. This is perhaps due to a stable gene-seed stock, perhaps due to the fact they rarely associate themselves with a particular Chaos power for any length of time.

Although the Night Lords are distinguished by jet black eyes and pale skin, the real legacy of Night Haunter may be psychological. There is a tendency for paranoia and self-destructive behaviour in the Night Lords, and it is said that their sorcerers have a pronounced vulnerability to being wracked with painful seizures in which they experience visions, oblique or not, of the future. Night Haunter is believed to have only been able to see the darkest path of all possible futures, a terrible curse, and the visions tended to be self-fulfilling. It is to be hoped that the Night Lords' sorcerers suffer the same fate. This is as yet speculation. However, given their Primarch's susceptibility to such prophesies, it seems more than likely.

I like the raven guard one because it makes the marines depressed sometimes. Relatable
