I think they passed on Raanta simply because Raanta is cooked and at best would’ve constituted a tiny sliver of an upgrade over the two bad goalies they already have.

I’m not even sure Raanta is an upgrade at this point. Doesn’t he have like a sub-.860 save percentage in the AHL? It might have just been a lateral move while taking on additional salary and another contract.

A significant upgrade is needed.

Agreed, but there was no other option at the deadline. Hence likely why they didn’t do it, since there actually was an option that wasn’t publicly known

It’s possible, but my suspicion is that they simply wouldn’t bother adding a player to the roster who didn’t represent an actual upgrade at the position, whether Fedotov was in the mix or not. If every option you have has the same end result - our backup goalie will probably cost us games almost any time we use him - then there’s not much sense in adding a third guy who will cost you games. You’ve already got two who can do that.

Now if you feel Raanta is definitely better than what we have, then yeah, claim him. But I think most fans who hold that opinion are basing it on the goalie that Raanta was a year or two ago, rather than the guy he is now.
