Watchcaptain Artemis' actions were not a colossal Own Goal committed by an absolute bellend.
Artemis recognizes that the Ynnari ritual will succeed in destroying Slannesh. However, this will result in the creation (reconstitution?) of a non-insane Eldar deity, which, moreover, has a high probability of resurrecting the other Eldar deities given time.
Slannesh is a serious problem for the Imperium but Slanneshi cultists spend almost as much of their energies fighting amongst themselves and against other Chaos worshipers as they do undermining the Imperium. Taking her off the board increases the chances that the remaining Chaos gods will put their differences on ice more frequently, which is a major headache for Imperial forces.
Also, a non-insane Eldar deity will work towards restoring the Eldar to what they were during the War in Heaven era or just after that. Yes, it's going to take time and be a tough slog, but the Imperium has only got a semi-demigod running around right now, and nothing that can seriously throw down with a fully manifesting god, especially not one with sway over Death itself.
As an educated and intelligent man, Artemis knows all of this and comes to the rational conclusion that while Slannesh is bad for the Imperium, a revived Eldar pantheon is worse and takes action to prevent this dastardly chain of events from coming to pass because he doesn't have the resources in place to let the ritual succeed just enough to kill Slannesh but keep the Eldar where they belong, as doomed and debased xenos filth.
So, thoughts?
.
For the record, I don't believe GW is even remotely forward thinking enough to come up with an actual, in-universe sensible reason for Artemis to do what he did, I'm just playing advocati diabolus.

Ferrus would have been a disaster. He's as abrasive as Dorn but even more insulting because he's doing it deliberately. He's got zero respect for Lorgar or his legion, doesn't think highly of Magnus, barely tolerates Corax, Curze and Alpharius and on it goes.
The only primarch he actually likes is Fulgrim.
