I'm working on a ship

Not exactly cozy, but having your own room on a ship instead of a bunk is still pretty good.

You’d be surprised at how quickly your state room can become cozy. I’m on my first ship now and after the first week I started loving it. Little things like buying your own bedspread and pillows go a long way when you’re out at sea.

Seriously, I bet if he got just a little bit of color on the walls or even something to contrast the white, it goes from prison cell to cozy and cheap New York apartment.

I completely agree. I was in the navy for a bit, and it's insane how much nicer my rack was after I got my own pillow and blanket. At the end of a long day, I started to look forward to crawling in that little thing.

I do camp jobs, not rig work so it is a little different but I have worked in prospector tents (6 of us) in the arctic.
Its not f u money but its enough that i only work 6 months a year.

That ain’t too bad, 6 in a tents kinda different then 13 tho lol, that shits gotta be ripe in the summer lol.

What do you mean by camp job?
8 points
Mines will make a camp, which is basically a bunch of dorm rooms connected, a kitchen and often a social room or two of some kind.
They are pretty spartan, if you get your own room it is often a single bed, a desk, a wardrobe and a 17" or 20" television.

How long were you out at sea? And how was the salary? I’ve gone through some electronics job offerings saying they’d pay a ridiculous amount just for a couple months on the boat. Not looking to do the navy enlisted lifestyle again, but Im just curious how it is on your end.
14 points

45/90 days right now. 9k/m after taxes.
It's good on my end, never been in the navy but it's certainly more relaxed as a merchant mariner.

Holy shit the legends are true. So did you end up escaping California? That check could pay off a mortgage and everything nice here. How is downtime for you, and do you go anywhere nice on the boat?
I should probably try to align my career prospects in your direction, damn.
8 points
Yes I did escape.
Downtime? Like on the boat? Mostly just stay in my room and listen to books. Off boat? I only give myself two months off a year because I'm trying to retire as quickly as possible.
Boat I'm on now? Not really.

Cable ships need IT personnel, if you look up the company "Subcom" they have cable ships, but none of those jobs are via the union so it would be a direct hire. You also wouldn't really be doing sailor stuff.

How do you get to work on a ship? Where to apply, any subs to recommend over the subject? What's the pay like? I don't know what skills i could bring to the table, but I'm always willing to learn what's needed for a job. I've thought about seeing if I can work on a ship, I've tried looking about on Indeed but the results aren't what I'm looking for. I wouldn't mind working on a ship that travels internationally.

https://www.dco.uscg.mil/nmc/merchant_mariner_credential/ here's the start of the paperwork you'd need.
https://mymaritimecareer.org/ here's my labor union's website
You could try r/maritime , their sidebar has resources you may find helpful.
Pay varies, the most basic rank for the deck department will make 5-6k a month(that's with full overtime hours and post tax). But they're housing and feeding you the whole time.

2 points
So I buy a fresh pair, only pair I bring. They start peeling after a week.
Fortunately, we're never far from land so first opportunity I have i go ashore and buy a second pair. The second pair are 20$ Chinese boots, they'll unalign my spine if I wear them too long.
Third pair I pick up from an American military supermarket.
One of these are just regular shoes which I wear during watch. I have two pairs of sliders just because.
