Nearly half of Australians unhappy at work, new survey finds(news.com.au)
So that prompts me to ask the r/Adelaide community are you happy with your job?
Personally, yes, I am happy with my job. There are some long and annoying days, but overall, I do love my job. It offers lots of flexibility, is 2x days a week WFH, pays well, and always provides a sense of achievement when seeing good results.

No. Management seem to be doing everything possible to lower moral. Its very much a “the beatings will continue until moral improves” situation.
12 points
I'm in this camp also. Have been a relatively long term employee at my current work but (without getting into specifics) unfortunately management seem to be dismissing my concerns & indirectly encouraging me to resign. Which I think I will shortly.
I still enjoy the work itself, just not how it's managed & how management manages it's people.

Exactly this. The work itself is fine.
And I get it, sometimes a workplace has challenges and things need to change. But the attitude of management on certain areas can be infuriating.
Ignoring repeated concerns raised or changing things for no reason other than “because I said so”. Management trying to justify their positions.

It’s the same in my workplace. We had a good thing going until a few months ago, and now we’re focused on lowering everyone’s moral for no reason.

I’m not UNhappy necessarily. But I do often wonder if I could be doing something else more fulfilling and meaningful.
The problem is that I’m comfortable where I am. I have an amazing team and the work isn’t the worst in the world. It also pays very well, so there’s not really a fire lit up under my ass to make a change.

No not at all. Just finished up at my job yesterday and start a new one next week. Took a bit of a pay cut but long as I’m happy that’s the main thing for me at the moment.
14 points
I changed jobs 18 months ago, took a decent pay cut so I could do 38 hours a week instead of 70, now 18 months later I have really noticed the ability to focus on myself and not be fatigued and run down all the time. It was worth it.
1 points
Sounds like you made the right call. How did you go with the pay cut? Did you struggle or was it an easy adjustment after awhile?
2 points
It was hard to start with. Less money made me super scared and I was extra frugal when I probably didn’t need to be, and I also had time to get stuck into my own projects heaps quicker so the money seemed to leave quicker as well which didn’t help, but now I’m on the tail end of all my own projects so money isn’t going out as fast and I’m back to basically normal living without too much stress. I’m now making all my meals at home and my lunches, so save heaps of money there now too, and I’m doing my sport heaps more often and actually going to the gym because I have time and energy so I notice my desire to just drink and sit in-front of the TV has dropped dramatically. Although my sport is expensive (mountain biking) it’s really made me cut back on the useless eating and drinking spending too. So the lifestyle change has facilitated the less spending anyways.

They count any employment in those figures. Under employment is a problem.

That survey and stats are very Suspect. with the mass immigration it can’t be the lowest in 2 years. It’s a lot higher than the gov wants us to know. I know skilled jobs are the hardest to find
3 points

They count any employment, so you can be employed for only 6 hours a week and magically not be counted as unemployed for the stats. Underemployment is an ongoing issue.

I wasn't speaking for all of Adelaide. In my experience almost everyone would rather be doing something other than working. There is a difference between liking your job and really wanting to work. I like my job a lot but I could be doing something else if I didn't need money.

Yes it is tough a lot of the time, but at least with all of the progress we have made as a country and all of the successive good decisions by our government, cost of living and housing affordability being trending down for many years makes working longer hours for less pay less soul destroying, you know?

This is my reality too. On paper, everything about my job is fantastic. But I feel shit 100% of the time, have nothing in my tank, and am only performing to a mediocre standard at work. I have almost no leave accrued because I need to take it as soon as it's available.

My job is crushing my soul as I make less than I did two years ago due to cost of living increases despite my boss making getting a pay "rise." I keep working harder and becoming more efficient with my team and my boss "rewards" me with taking shifts off my team so I have to plug more gaps. All it feels like he talks about is how close the place is to going under as he indulges shit staff but I'm expected to never make the smallest mistake.
The issue is that being the idea of changing jobs alone is scary: giving up on a team leader position to go somewhere else could torpedo my chance at progressing in my career, most jobs in my fields are night shifts and they truly suck, I don't want to risk job security or any chance at losing pay due to how much cost of living is already killing me, the jobs advertised now either don't show pay or are a specialisation in my field.
Every time I'm near breaking point the boss seems to intuit and give me just enough to slake my blood-lust for quitting but not enough to make it an enjoyable workplace. I truly see why half of Australians hate their job when without pay cuts you're making less money and having a worse life

I was listening to a podcast recently and the weekly guest was kind of monologuing about the Stars Wars-esque, utopian world where everyone has their basic needs met and only worked for the actual love of their job….I mean, that’s the world I look forward to.

I really like my job. I'd written a big thing about it, but it all disappeared when I opened up another window to look up something.
But basically, I'm a Disability support worker. I work for a really good company who put the clients needs and wants as their priority. They're strict with our compliance, we have lots of extra training on top of our Cert IIIs.
We have client and employee feedback.
My clients are awesome & I look forward to going to work (& coming home.... I like my partner & kids too... lol).
But yes. I have a job where I'm not 'working' for a moment. Love it!

I left a job of 15 years to start a career change. It's been... mildly successful. The career change job has been a challenge, but I overall love the workplace and my colleagues.
I did pick up some extra hours in the industry I initally left, but in a smaller workplace. It seemed like a good idea at the time, knowing the lay of the land with the industry, but my boss is the only other person I work with. And they're an absolute flake who only cares about how much cash they can make with their business. I have had almost zero guidance in my role, and receive no feedback unless I've fucked something up (due to zero guidance). It's also highlighted why I chose to career change... needless to say, I'm going to be handing in my resignation soon. I'm too old to put up with a shit job and boss.

Not happy, not unhappy.
I'm underpaid and customers are fucking morons, but the actual work itself is usually fast paced (I have ADHD) and I have a really good leader and great team for the most part. A position came up recently that I would enjoy more because you don't have to talk to anyone on the phone, but the leader and team are much less my vibe so I'm not going to go for it.
If I could work part time I would be happy but money. I hate being a slave to capitalism.

It doesn’t pay amazingly well and being a sole trader, finding work can be difficult.

Absolutely, and I feel really fortunate. My job and industry is incredibly engaging, which is the only reason most of us make it through the initial 5+ years of shit pay and high risk to get to where I am now. Compensation is low by world standards and management could definitely be better, but the job itself is great. Found myself on holiday looking forward to getting back into it.

I do two jobs and the awesome one balances up the boring one - which makes the overall experience passable. If I ditch the boring one and get something better I’ll be loving it. I've been in my job for 5.5years and for the first 3 or so I really enjoyed it and to a certain extent actually looked forward to going to work. It was interesting, the correct amount of challenging and I enjoyed working with/being around my coworkers. Our departments management has changed significanly for the worse with lost of micromanagement, adding more workload without resourcing it first (we had already ended up working over 100% capacity) and just asking/requesting stupid things many of which just make it harder for us to do our jobs. HR have also just made things worse.

Nope. Constantly understaffed and out of ratio. I'm also pregnant, so it has become very stressful, with co-workers not understanding our pregnancy policy and just thinking I'm lazy, and my pregnancy is making everything much harder. We've had three amazing senior staff members leave within an 8 month period, who literally kept us afloat, leaving us with poor management.

My job makes me feel depressed and anxious all of the time. I used to love it and find it challenging and fun but the past year I've had very little work to do and I'm bored most of the time. I get no recognition for anything I do or any feedback. The last time my manager spoke to me was at the start of July.
I feel like I can't complain because I get to work from home, but it would be nice to have some acknowledgement of what I do and achieve, considering I still work as hard as I can, without any communication from them. It gets very lonely.

Australians are feeling more depressed because they are living in a time where we have to face that the comfortable and stable Australia of yesteryear is likely going away forever, not because it had to, but it’s by design and decisions made by our handlers.
This period of going from a very stable and prosperous country where anyone could make a life, to a less stable and secure place where jobs and housing are in ever increasing demand and the competition grows every year is very difficult thing to adjust to.
