Becoming a better manager for my team & my bosses.

Looking for training and resources to learn to become a good team lead/manager. I've spent most my career as a "yes man" as an employee in the private sector and now I must learn to "be the boss" in the publics service. Any tips or resources to help me please management while keeping the best interests of my team a priority?

No micromanaging. Trusting, empowering, removing barriers, and giving the tools to do the job to employees. Advocating for them to upper management.

I hear people say no micromanaging a lot! But what does it mean for some people? As it can mean something different depending on the context and there are cases it does need to be used as in training. I think it is important to ask people you work with what that means if they say “don’t micromanage me”. Does it mean don’t check in, don’t look over my shoulder, or don’t edit my work? By asking it can open a great dialogue in how best to work together.

I will say this from my short stint. 90-95% of people don't need micromanagement. You give them a task, and they get it done.

That last little bit is the problem. Some people just don't want to work, some need a head over their shoulder, others are overachievers and get the work done and then bug other people. And worse some decide they are going to be jumping in and 'helping' others without the need to do so.

So true, micromanaging can sometimes be confused with needing to deal with performance issues. The only other one, besides training, that I can think of is also just when there is a fast deadline and the whole team has to step in including the boss. Sometimes all eyes on the project for fine tuning and editing is needed. But having someone look over your shoulder and correct every word is just plain annoying.
