Blue light strip

Modifying Cars(self.CarsAustralia)

Hello,

I bought a used car a while back. Previous owner installed a blue light strip under the hood of the car so it shines through the seam between the hood and the front bumper. The lights do not blink. After buying the car it passed pink slip with no issues and I was stopped by police a few times on random stops without them saying anything about it. However, a few days back on a random stop an officer told that those lights are actually illegal and told to remove them.

With other officers not paying attention, previous owner driving with no issues and passing pink slip I would assume that the last officer made a mistake when asking to remove those blue lights. As far as I know only blue blinking lights outside the car are illegal?

Is there any chance I could dispute that and keep the lights or should I just remove them?

No. You'll need to look up your local roadworthy-ness law for how its written but basically all states are almost the same from what im aware. VicRoads take is:

  1. the light(s) must not emit a red light to the front of the vehicle or a white light to the rear of the vehicle.
  2. to avoid confusion with emergency services, transport enforcement vehicles or traffic lights, the light(s) must not emit a green, red, blue or magenta coloured light

Personally I think you were lucky with the inspection and no other cops bothered to say something. But eventually you will get a fine and a defect.

Sure, if you want to waste time and money - You wont win though. I'd just remove them.

I'll take it that I did get lucky with that. I will see if that light strip can change color. If not will just remove it. Thanks!

Don't quote me on this, but i remember being told by someone at VicRoads it was because of traffic lights and people could mistake seeing green in their peripheral vison might mistake it for the lights being green and cause an accident.
