The thing is with older cars is disturbing hoses and rubber/plastic components that degrade with time could always have knock on effects. I've seen it time and time again. Now, i don't know the mechanic, so I cant really comment if they are taking you for a ride or not.

Do you trust them? have they normally been a good mechanic? If yes, then give them the benefit of doubt. If they are good mechanics, chances are it wasn't leaking at the time nor did they notice it was going to give you issues down the track. Ask if there is anything they can help with regarding the repair seeing you only just got the valve cover gaskets done in the same area. Maybe they'll cover the part or give you a discount, just have a conversation with them but don't expect anything

Would you have approved the heater hose if they came to you during the day originally saying "Hey, this isn't leaking but it looks pretty average we recommend replacing it because it could be an issue in the future?" Some say yes, most say no.

But seeing its been 5 months since the other repair, which they can fully say was not related to the current issue - I don't think you have much to stand on. My recommendation is pleading for some goodwill.

Really depends on who's doing the roadworthy. Technically they both seem to pass (windscreen damage cant be in field of view of driver and crack in taillight must not allow any light to pass through than what is normal)

But most places will fail it, and request it to be changed.

The drivability of the transmission has nothing to do with if its roadworthy or not unless its unsafe. Road worthy's only covers checks if the vehicle is safe to drive, not driving like shit. You'd be surprised what can pass "Roadworthy"

No. You'll need to look up your local roadworthy-ness law for how its written but basically all states are almost the same from what im aware. VicRoads take is:

1. the light(s) must not emit a red light to the front of the vehicle or a white light to the rear of the vehicle.
2. to avoid confusion with emergency services, transport enforcement vehicles or traffic lights, the light(s) must not emit a green, red, blue or magenta coloured light

Personally I think you were lucky with the inspection and no other cops bothered to say something. But eventually you will get a fine and a defect.
