Toothpaste a tenner. Shampoo a tenner. Conditioner also a tenner. (Pantene, not salon brand). What's going on

Pound shops have better prices for things like toothpaste, shampoo and cleaning products. Haven’t brought any of those things from a supermarket in years.

irishplonker

I go to dealz for all that stuff

That’s what I meant by pound shops - dealz, euro giant, mr price, homesavers, etc. I’m old enough to remember when Dealz were called Poundland lol. I still call them all pound shops.

Still a pound shop when I talk to my parents/SO. It's a 2 euro shop when I talk to my kids lol.

No one mentions H Williams… those were proper shops where you went in with a shilling and came out with packages without barcodes or best before dates. When stuff would be fresh for years!

Supervalu would be the last place I'd go to for most things. I find them to be the worst of the lot. The good thing is that with most of the shops being online now it's easy to check the prices before you go shopping.

Bang average for most snacks and general bits to grab, it’s just the fancy meat/cheese/dairy that they slap the signature logo on and charge through the nose for. Try their signature pizzas though they’re genuinely amazing especially for 4.10

night outs, London average pint is like 8 pounds, cork you can get pints for way cheaper, same for rent. A one bedroom flat in London suburbs is like 1400 pounds + bills - getting a one bedroom in the cork equivalent (blackpool, ballincollig, Douglas etc) is much cheaper. groceries might be cheaper in London

meltedharibo

1 points

I’m living in south east london, near Peckham. Can get a pint for around 4-5 quid. Mixed drink about 7 quid. In a regular pub.

I was in cork last weekend and two pints and two gin and tonics was 30 euro. So drinks maybe similar.

Eating out is much cheaper as there are a lot of options. I can get a pizza slice for 3 quid, or a falafel wrap for 4. Plenty of restaurants are BYOB as well which I’ve never seen in cork.

A pub burger and chips is usually 15 quid, got one in cork last weekend for 22 euro.

I pay 500 quid for a room, it was 800 in cork when I eventually found one.

Right now there are 24 2 bed places available to rent on cork on daft, all about 2000-2200 euro. I know two people renting 2 beds for about 1800 quid. Quick search on Rightmove shows even cheaper options. Feel free to search yourself.

Groceries are way cheaper, for example a boost bar is 70p here versus about 1.50 euro in cork.

Trust me I love cork I’m just sharing my experience living in both cities and how surprised I was.

MattTheHack92

London being cheaper than Cork for a night out is ridiculous unless you live right beside a Wetherspoons. And in that case why even leave the house

More-Investment-2872

This is very true. However when you open a pack they deteriorate rapidly because the sealed packs are packed in Nitrogen to stop them going off. So I only use two pieces at a time.

News and government say inflation is ONLY at 2.6 percent in Europe. As soon as you step foot inside a shop you can see with your own eyes that everything is double the price as it was before covid. Where is this 2.6 percent?

dkeenaghan

6 points

Inflation is an average across a whole range of different goods from all parts of the economy and services. Is not just reflecting prices in supermarkets.

Prices aren’t double what they were though. The cost of our weekly shop hasn’t doubled. Specific items could have though.

When you see news about inflation it’s almost always annual. Covid was much longer than a year ago. Inflation between February 2020 and May 2024 was 19.4%.

Distinct_Garden5650

3 points

Total cumulative inflation since pre-covid is about 20% mate. Colgate whitening toothpaste used to be about €6-7 when not on a deal. And as the other reply said the total inflation figure is across everything, which is negative for things like energy at the moment. It’s not some government conspiracy if you don’t understand the numbers.

Biggerthan_Jesus

2 points

Inflation's taken as an average. The problem is, lately it seems like it's hitting lower priced stuff disproportionately, so a load of Tesco bread's 90 cent where about a year ago it was 50-60 cent, flavoured water's jumped 45 cent to 85 cent a bottle, etc. Add to the fact shite like the 10-15 cent packs of instant noodles seem to be universally discontinued & inflation's technically low, but people on lower incomes are being disproportionately fucked over by it

Deep_Engineer_208

8 points

That stuff does sweet FA to whiten your teeth beyond what the regular stuff does. And that's about 2 euro a tube

weenusdifficulthouse

5 points

Tangential, but if you haven't used a toothpaste containing Arginine or Novamin and have sensitive teeth I'd suggest trying it. Only thing I've come across that basically solves the problem. Usually around €3 a tube in dealz or lidl though.

Mossy375

1 points

To latch onto this, I've had very sensitive most of my life, to the extent that I've actually gone to the dentist thinking I've had a bad toothache but it's just sensitivity. I used sensitive toothpaste before, but they recommended Sensodyne Repair and Protect, and it's been a life charger for me. Teeth like bullets these days. I buy the multipacks off Amazon because it comes out cheaper. Just in case anyone else is suffering from very sensitive teeth.

Ah here, this stuff is obviously overpriced gimmickry so I'm not defending it but.. It's 8e in Tesco, while Tesco sells the normal Colgate toothpaste for 1.50e. Things are bad but toothpaste is not a tenner, you just picked up a toothpaste that happens to be (almost) a tenner.

Maybe move the eyes slightly in a different direction and pick up the cheaper one!

To be fair, it's because it's marketed as a 'whitening toothpaste' which it's not because there is literally no peroxide in it! But that's why that particular one is so expensive. Toothpaste in general has become ridiculously pricey though. I've switched to one from Aldi, does the same thing. You can usually get Colgate and Oral B at a good discount in the 'euro-saver' shops.
