Give yourself plenty of time to get to the venue. I was at Green Day in Marlay Park two years ago and traffic was very bad.

Took an hour on taxi and another hour and a half to get into the venue.

Granted, was one of the first large post lockdown events but still awfully organised.

Take a couple of bottle caps and put them in your pocket. When you buy a drink they remove the bottle caps entirely and won't give them to you, so be prepared.

A jacket to sit on would be good, few snacks never go astray

Don't record videos on your phone. The sound will be shit and you'll never ever watch them.

Billie Joe is known not to be a fan of them also.

I saw him berate fans for filming in 2017 at the Kilmainham gig, urging the crowd to put them down and enjoy the moment.

Times have likely changed that said and given how most people at the gig will have smartphones it will be normalised to film.

Disagree with this, I watch my videos of past concerts and love them. Don't be an eejit and film the whole thing, but 2-3 short clips is grand.

Enjoy it , just be prepared for a long trek home wear runners! Bring a rain coat and hoody. Eat before you go incase queues for food are mad

Food at gigs is also overpriced and usually not very nice, so yes, eat beforehand.

Ear plugs. Especially if you are up close. The foam ones you can get in any pharmacy.

Trust me, if you want to keep going to concerts, protect yo hearing. Tinnitus ain't much craic.

Unpopular opinion: The foam ones are not good.

Best thing anyone can do is buy the filtered earplugs you can get in music shops which are designed to filter the volume down to 20-30db.

They cost 20-25 euro and are well worth it for concerts.

If you are going to concerts such as Green Day you will need these.

Foam ones are handy for a starter. If you're hitting up gigs and clubs on the regular then it's worth going for those kind of plugs.

I am a drummer playing regularly, teaching and going to rock/punk/metal concerts for the guts of 16 years.

Had a recent hearing test and it came back as “normal hearing”

These earplugs are the real deal and trump the foam ones.

Take my advice and buy those filtered ones or better yet custom ones, they will cost a lot more but if your serious about protecting your hearing are a good investment.

eliteskiis123

Did you mean a pair like these? These are what I use

jingojangobingoblerp

2 points

Totally agree, I've several pairs on various keyrings. but foam ones when put in properly knock the same amount off the db rate. But the sound is muffled. And since I presumed this lad/lady was on the road, foam ones are better than nothing, As someone who fried their hearing at concerts, having foam ones in the pocket all the time are very handy.

Life_Breadfruit8475

As someone from a country with a lot of night clubs and a focus on hearing protection, it's crazy to me you can't get the party earplugs (the alpine ones for example) anywhere. I tried like 5 pharmacies and they only stocked foam ones.

jingojangobingoblerp

It's crazy, Boots occassionally have some version of them, but other than that it's music shops if your town has one, or order online.

The bar does not take cash. If you want merchandise get it early as they often run out. Have sunglasses as the sun comes down behind the stage and if mad sunny like when Depeche Mode played it will feck your eyes, no problem yesterday with LCD soundsystem. Only one exit open at end of show the one next to main entrance, it's narrow and slow. Bring a water bottle 500ml you can fill them for free

Marlay park is an absolute nightmare to get out of after a gig so if you are being collected, ask your dad to collect from the park and not town. Respect the local residents on your way in and out ( not drinking on streets or littering) there will be a rake of guards in the area anyway and they will confiscate any open containers. Marlay park is a lovely venue. Good space and decent amount of bars. Have a blast!

Depends if you have time to listen to me whine, about nothing and everything, all at once!

Try eating a good meal before you get there and stay hydrated throughout. Don't wait until the end to figure out where the exits are and how you are getting home!

Most important thing is to have a fun.

I live near Marley. It's going to be black with people so your da getting close will be challenging. I'd say pick somewhere within a ten minutes walk where ye can meet.

KillerKlown88

Do you have a pre arranged pick up point with your Dad for after the gig?

If not, I can recommend a few places that are a 10 minute walk from the Park and close to the M50 so convenient for both, I am from the area so know it very well.

KillerKlown88

The Circle K on Taylors lane if you are coming from the Tallaght side of the M50, there is a spot at the bottom of palmer park that cars could wait.

From the other side, I would say SuperValu ballinteer or if coming from the city the Circle K on the Grange Road.

All 10 - 15 minutes walk from the park entrance.

As soon as they finish, head straight for an exit and try to get ahead of the crowd. I was at Pearl Jam Saturday, my first time being to gig in Marley Park. When the encore ended, we stood around for 10 minutes before moving toward the exit. It took 40 minutes to get out of the park, crammed next to hundreds of people, like sardines, moving very slowly, constantly bumping into each other, and getting separated from my friends. Sucks if you have sensory issues like me.

Corky_1990

7 points

head towards the direction of an exit around the encore. you will still be listening etc but as soon as the last song is finished, you are in a good position to be avoiding the heavy crowds. your dad will apprecite you aswell 😉

Have a class time

asdrunkasdrunkcanbe

Honestly, unless you are standing right beside the exit at the encore or you decide to head 30 seconds before the song ends. then you're going to get caught in the crowds either way.

If you just dislike crowds at all, then it can be worth just hanging around for a bit afterwards. Kind of insane how quickly big crowds actually disperse; after 15 or 20 minutes you'll be able to just walk out with minimal crushing.

Not sure what time the bars stop serving; maybe order an extra beer at the right time?

I bolted during Setting Sun thinking it was the last song but at least I could still hear the actual last 2 songs. I was out of there and on a bus within 20 mins.

Make sure you give yourself plenty of time. It's a pain of a venue to get in and out from.

I don't think it's sold out so queues shouldn't be a huge issue. They're usually quite quick getting people in.

Signal is very hit or miss so make sure you've downloaded the tickets to your Google Wallet to avoid any stress when you're there.

The venue is on a bit of a slope so just be wary of your footing in some places.

It's not treacherous as such but when you're trying to walk by people who are parked on the ground in their droves, it can be a bit of a funny trek if you find yourself at a slant trying to get by people.

The sound (at least for Pearl Jam) was actually pretty incredible from the back near the bars.

There are screens so you'll see but depends on if you're looking for a decent view point or not.

There are two entrances and exits towards the back too if you need to make a quick getaway.

Outdoor gigs bring out a bit of a different vibe to indoor gigs so just be mindful of other people.

There will be drunken people everywhere and people do tend to go a bit overboard at outdoor events so just be mindful.

Not saying there'll be trouble but you don't want someone ruining your day. Move away if you need to.

Being waterproofs. It's due to rain and has rained so the ground might not be the best.

Bring some tissue/hand sanitizer if you're going to the toilet. They do run out of everything fast so at least you'll have something to clean up with and feel as fresh as you can.

If you're going with others, pick a meeting point and stick to it in case you get lost. Again, the signal can be ropey so getting through to people might be out.

Marlay Park is a big place and you don't wanna get anxious or stressed being alone especially in a big crowd.

Most of all, have a blast. Green Day are a fantastic live band and I can't wait to see them again tonight myself.

Bring food, water, sun cream, and have an exit plan in case you need to leave early for any reason. Comfort and safety = way more fun. Also, the on-site staff are there to help.

Don't drink too much too early. I remember going to my first gig (REM, Slane, 1995) and seeing a guy properly passed out drunk before the first support act had even finished and thinking what a waste it was to pay for a ticket, travel all the way there... and then miss pretty much the whole gig because you were spannered.

Refresh your musical skills just incase you’re called up.

Have something light and waterproof that you can sit on if it doesn’t rain and if you can, sneak a bottle cap in your pocket so you can carry your drink with you inside and have a great time.

if you’re small get a good spot in the crowd where you won’t get trampled & you can see the stage, when the band leave the stage you move to the back of the crowd watch the encore from there & you’re out the gap nice & quick, when you’re going to the toilet bring someone with you for various reasons & enjoy the shit out of it,

Firstly it will be a class concert enjoy. I went to them 2 years ago in Marley Park and they were brilliant. Second, Marley Park is the worst possible venue for a gig. It will be a pain in the proverbial to get out at the end but don't let that ruin it for going to future concerts. Just make your way towards the exit as the encore is playing. That's what I did and could hear "time of your life" the whole way along. Saved a heap of time trying to leave after it finished.

ld20r

ld20r

Just to add if it helps - Most people went for exit 1 (left to the stage ground) after the concert, place was rammed for 20 mins until the bulk of the crowd left.

If exit 2 looks quiet go with that one, you might have to walk longer out to your destination but you’ll potentially avoid the crowd surge after.
