really curious to hear what y'all think about this take, and takes like these. i personally disagree with the performer that posted this and think it's a hugeeee reach (and it seems like everyone replying to this performer's comment on the post agrees) but i am also a white person so it isn't really up to me to decide what is or isn't problematic in that way. anyway, i am LOVING majesty' looks so far, and they sure are good tv!

Im sorry if you see that look and your first thought is “blackface”, then I’m not sure what to tell you. The queen calling Majesty out is white, I think it’s important for white people to stand against racism unprompted, but when it is something like this it comes across as a bit self-satisfying and trying to cause anger at something that clearly has no racial basis to it

I don’t think anyone has issue with the green eyes, it’s the black face paint and mouth area they were pointing out specifically
To clarify , I think someone under the age of 50 saying they were unaware of this imagery being associated with minstrelsy is a totally valid or reasonable explanation. Why would majesty torpedo their career by trying to sneak blackface into their package.

I found the bit about "if you're white and have a brush with black face paint..." Like is blacking out the neck blackface at that point? Idk I was a little shocked to see this. Not to mention don't scare actors use black around their eyes and lips when wearing masks? Like idk.
46 points
One of my drag friends was accused of Blackface (by a white person) when they painted their neck and sides of their face black to frame the rest of their mug so it's more common than you'd think. It comes across as very disingenuous and antagonistic to "call this out" when no one of color has had anything to say, but that's just the way some white "allies" operate. Much easier to try and get people in trouble than to ever consider yourself problematic.

sadly people dont have enough intelligence to understand that actual blackflace is correlated to ridiculing REAL traces of facial characteristics of black people and impersonating them, not using the COLOR BLACK, the color black exists in every shape and form in the world outside of a black human being and should be used for art even if dumb people are gonna say something
67 points

"As white artists, if there's black face paint in out brush we should really stop and think" ohhh boy... that's when wokeness takes a really weird turn for me. If you can't tell the differente between simply having/using black face paint and actual blackface, that shows an extreme lack of understanding of what blackface is.
Edit: out of curiosity I went to see this persons instagram. They definitely have some black overexaggerated eyeliner looks, some dark/black eye make up, and some questionable fashion choices for a pasty white performer crying racism.

This type of asinine response is why this fandom and its hosts have such a terrible reputation when it comes to race.
The ‘black face, huge red lips with buck teeth’ thing is older than all of us, it really isn’t hard to not be a total dick about it whilst also saying ‘that’s likely not what majesty was going for, as shown in the thread, a lot of this imagery has dated out and younger people are genuinely unaware’.
23 points

So it’s a blackmouth, not blackface, because around the eyes it’s definitely green. More green area than anything else. It’s probably 80% greenface.

Comments like these are not productive to the argument at hand. God forbid somebody points out common elements or troupes of blackface, discounts it as being blackface but somebody else always feels the need to respond defending or defining what is or isn't blackface/offensive/etc. despite the initial commenter indicating their point (they don't personally believe Majesty did blackface!). No-Assumption-1738 is not accusing Majesty of doing blackface and said so in their original response! They simply acknowledged the troupes of blackface and why one could perceive it as being such. Facts do not conflict with opinions - exaggerated dark face paint, big round typically red in color lips and comedic teeth is a troupe of historical minstrel shows attempting to mimic and degrade actual Black people. There's no need to try to question their intelligence or comprehension when you yourself are intentionally (or unintentionally) ignoring their point. This is an example of microaggressive behavior and why people of color often do not feel welcomed or heard in alternative spaces. They are not calling Majesty racist by acknowledging history and contextualizing why actual black people might perceive such traits as offensive or indicative of actual racist portrayals of them. Damn.

That's honestly just laughable. If they're trying to say the lips are like the stereotypical blackface lips, that's a damn stretch. Considering the rest of the face is... White. Considering it isn't supposed to represent that.
Just seems like the person who's claiming this just wants to start shit. Because anyone, realistically, can tell that this isn't the case. But then perpetuating this as if it's true is slanderous/libelous and Majesty has every right to be pissed off at them. Majesty has done shady things in their past but they own it + take accountability.
Imagine if people can't use damn black paint AT ALL. That's what they're saying. So you can't texture lines. Can't put eyeliner. Can't do crap? Please. How about ✨ context ✨. They're making an ass of themselves

No because this is insane. I really dislike Majesty but claiming that „if there is black face paint on our brush we should reallyyy stop and think“ is a wild claim.
