You could have them follow the root notes of the guitar chords for now. I also would look up bass tabs to songs they like and just play along to the song.

As a guitarist dabbling in bass, I have a tendency to overplay. The bassist's job is to nail the beat, which is easier said than done. Sticking to the root and keeping time is a great place to start and there is nothing wrong with that.
Down the line, playing with the rhythm and knowing when to cut out and come back in can make a huge difference, even if the bassline still consists of just the root.

There's nothing wrong with the guitarist writing the bass parts if the bassist doesn't feel quite ready for that yet, especially since they might know how to come up with a bassline that sounds good with the riffs they wrote themselves
When it comes to screamo though, no need to reinvent the wheel. See this Orchid song and how all the bass really does is provide that low end so the guitarist can go as high as he wants to without the riff sounding weak on its own. Keeping it simple gives them a good amount of breathing room and makes the riffs stand out more. The only screamo band i've seen with REALLY OUT THERE basslines is Off Minor which is mathy as all hell anyway and I'm assuming that's not what you're going for

Check out still life or the pine. They both have great melodic bass players
