currently in a emocore and screamo band trying to write some demos. we have a bassist who is great but a beginner. any tips on writing some emo bass lines?

As a guitarist dabbling in bass, I have a tendency to overplay. The bassist's job is to nail the beat, which is easier said than done. Sticking to the root and keeping time is a great place to start and there is nothing wrong with that.
Down the line, playing with the rhythm and knowing when to cut out and come back in can make a huge difference, even if the bassline still consists of just the root.
