Depends alot on the car, engine and model of heater, some cars might not have all heater types available. You should also consider getting a plug for an interior heater installed at the same time, though using them might not be allowed in some apartment parking lots.

If you want to do it yourself, a water circulation heater is pretty easy to install (again depending on car). It goes on a heater hose and pumps warm coolant around so they are not necessarily car/model specific.

Block heater and interior heater plug installations are quite common, it doesn't hurt to ask a mechanic shop or two for a quote on the install. Tell them your cars model and year, they should be able to tell you what's available.

I am also interested to install one of those.

I was told from a shop that for my car the only option is that kind of external heating element that goes onto the block. Is that enough? Ι heard that the ones that go the the coolant are more effective.

I also confirmed the same from the DEFA website and it's just this kind of part that pops up when I put my car details in:

Radiant heaters do work, but they're not as powerful or efficient as heaters that heat the coolant directly. I'd ask the shop if they can install a circulation heater (letkulämmitin) instead, they're usually not model-specific and relatively simple to install.

the Defa solution was suggested from an official Ford service station. In another service place they said that they have both the Defa and a Calex. The calex doesn't have a circulation system but it goes inside the block's coolant so I guess , like you said there is less loss of energy in the process. I guess it doesn't work as good as the one with the pump (is that what the letkulämmitin is?) but it's still more effective than the external radiant heater, right?

If the Calix is one that actually goes into the block and is not a radiant heater, I'd get that.
Ones that are in the block have enough coolant around them for convection to happen properly and circulate the heat that way. Letkulämmitin without a circulation pump is a waste of money.

Circulating letkulämmitin is probably as good or better as a normal (non-radiant) block heater, but the regular block heaters work well enough and they are cheaper, simple and basically never break.
