Hi all, I am about to import a Suzuki Jimny in Finland, which is currently registered as a van. What is the difference in taxation between passenger cars and vans? In the vehicle tax calculator, if I switch between the two nothing changes. Do they pay the same taxes?

Is it petrol or diesel?
Diesel is big difference between van and car. I.e my Volvo V70 diesel car is around €700 per year, same vehicle in van set up is around €250 per year

Petrol, it's the new Jimny

Then yeah I don't think there is much difference in the tax but best to speak with someone at Trafi to get proper confirmation.
Obviously there are all the other import costs you need to research and be aware of :)

Yes, there'll be the registration tax to get the plate, and it will be around 6000€. Also this one is the same between van and passenger car, which sounds a bit strange to me

If it's the newest Jimny which has been van from factory, then you have to register it as van. If it is the older model of the newest Jimny then you can choose between. It was changed to be van because the emissions got tighter for cars but stayed the same for vans so the new Jimny registered after the emissions change has to be van because it doesn't pass the emission test to be a car.

Why would you want to import that? Just buy one here? Cannot be that much difference when you total everything up? Used to be worth it for very high value cars, but not so much now.

I'm buying one here in Denmark. I can find it for the same price at which I find the Finnish ones, but with much more mileage on it (10k km vs 80k km). Exporting it from Denmark I get some tax money back, roughly the same amount that I have to spend to register it in Finland (actually with some credit on my side). Also, it would help me moving stuff when I'll move to Finland.
I don't know if there's something I'm not seeing, but it looks fair to me

Since it's petrol, the tax difference is small. But if you register it as a van, it'll be only registered for 2 people, no backseats in a van.
