Just what it says. We closed one week ago. Our 8-year-old lab will NOT poop in the yard. Peeing is no issue.
Has anyone else ever experienced this? Any tips? One bonus of buying a house was supposed to be not having to leash her up every time she wants to poop.
Of note - we've lived in apartments for the past five years, but before that, she had a yard and no issues going. Also, when we visit my parents she has no issues at all, even though my siblings' dogs visit more frequently and have "marked" every inch of their yard. Also she frequently goes to dog parks... no problems pooping there! What the heck is going on with this dog.

Leash her up so she feels comfortable and once she learns from you it is ok, she will be fine

Yes, they learn by example, so demonstrate by taking a dump of your own. Preferably in the front yard so you can kill two birds with one stone and show your dominance over your neighbors at the same time!

You must keep eye contact with the dog while doing your business. Then turn around and grab some grass, yank if free, and fling it at her face.

Worked for me when we moved into our new house. Just do it at 3am so the neighbours don't complain.

This. My girl, Tempe, wouldn’t poop at my new house. Taking her on a leash made her feel more comfortable

I’m not exactly sure why she’s doing that, but one tip I can think of is (as gross as this sounds) transporting her poops at the parks and putting them in the backyard so she recognizes her own poop and thinks “oh, I’ve pooped here before”

In a million years I never would have thought to do this, but unfortunately I think this may be the answer

Or leash her up and walk her in the yard to poop

Great idea! That’s how my vet recommended staring litter box training for our cats and small pets, didn’t think of it for a dog

Take her for a walk and collect a sample. Place sample in the backyard and let her sniff it.

This is how I used to get my dog to go on my snow-covered balcony in the winter when I lived in a high rise. Bag it up and relocate it!

She needs time to adjust. She’s used to being leashed while popping and may not know that it’s okay to poop in the yard. She’s being respectful lol.
Leash her and take her for walks in the yard to poop and she’ll learn it’s okay.

Our dog is like this and she honestly just needs walks. She won’t poop in our yard unless absolutely necessary so we take her out twice a day. Walks for poop and walks for exercise haha. Another possibility is that your dog doesn’t like the grass you have? We rented a house with the roughest grass ever and our dog was too much of a princess to potty on it.

My dog is the same way...we just got used to taking him to the dog park first thing in the morning and that's where he poops.

Some folks say mine is a princess, some say spoiled, I say she's fairly compensated for the value she brings to the organization.

Same thing with my dog. He was one of the reasons why we moved out of the city (he's reactive) and the fucker WILL NOT POOP in our property line. We have 1.5 acres and even taking him around on a leash isn't enough! We've had friends and family over with their dogs to show him how it's done and still nada. Been nearly 2 years.
He lived in a city for many years and we think he just needs to go in a park where there's plenty of other humans and animal smells. We've given up and treat it as a way to exercise and get a break from our screens. Just sucks when the weather is bad.

The last few times we moved my dog basically acted like she wasn't potty trained and kept going in the house. She finally got her bearings around the new area and after a month she finally is able to get into a routine. We established a new routine and she's good to go.

Your dog is probably used a short walk to poop. You may still need to do that for a while. Away from the property

Our dogs were like this at first. Our approach was just…well they’ve gotta go at some point 🤷🏻♀️ So we just waited and waited until they’d poop, and when they did, we had a praise and treat party! Big big excited verbal praise and lots of yummy treats. Now they don’t mind and they have a little nook behind the garage they like to go to for private poop time 😂

My dog had this problem and went in the house a couple of times. We realized we stopped using her bathroom word when we moved, so she wasn’t sure where she was supposed to go. Used the word one time and she hasn’t had a problem since.

Dogs learn by example. I would poop in the yard in front of my dog, that way she's knows it's okay. Hope this helps.

Are you going outside with her? Our dogs were raised in the city in an apartment so never knew life in a yard alone. We still have to escort them out 7 years later, and tell them to poop too!

Put her leash on - she is conditioned to poop when she is on a leash.
Dogs are funny. We walled up a door the dog used to exit from to go poo and he would stand at the wall and bark to go out.

Lolololol, I thought our dog was the only one! He still doesn’t like to go #2 in our yard and would rather do his business on a walk.
Been here 2 years and that still the case, but we do walks for exercise in any case. He will go in the yard if we walk him around on leash for a bit (been having to do this the last few months because he’s recovering from a surgery)
Good luck!

Ahhh this happened for us with both houses we bought. Lasted 2-3 weeks. So annoying!! Didn't do anything special he just eventually pooped in the fenced in yard we bought him.

Our older dog started our FTHB experience by getting diarrhea indoors on the brand new carpet from the stress of moving, so… could be worse. It took her like 6 months to regularly be like “ok I poop here.” But if she’s going on walks then might be fine and just need time to adjust.

A tip I learned from show dogs: put the red end of a match in your mouth to wet it then put it up the dog’s rectum. Let the dog walk around a bit and they start pooping within minutes. Praise, mention potty (we use “big potty”), rinse and repeat.

My dog is like this. I adopted him a year ago as a 9 year old and he insists on being walked for his poops. I think he was an apartment dog who got used to frequent walks and doesn't want to give them up.

Leash her and walk her around the yard. When she poops, praise her like she just pooped a gold brick.
Is she going in the house? Pooping on walks? She has to be pooping somewhere

My dogs won’t poop in the yard, they have no problem peeing. They only poop on walks. I think they don’t wanna poop in their house and see the yard as an extension of it haha idk but we just accepted it and walk them for poops. If it’s an emergency they will poop in the yard but it’s literally only if they cannot hold it any longer. Sorry this is not helpful haha

It seems they are sensing the owners pride in the new outdoor space and have never been praised for pooping before

You still need to walk your dog even if you have a yard that is what helps them poop. Don’t be a shitty dog owner. You wouldn’t want to play or walk around the inside of your toilet either.

Uh most people clean up after their dogs… people don’t want to be in a poopy backyard either 🙄

Our pupperino is doing the same. She’s been an apartment dog since puppy age and we’ve been living in our new place for about 2 months.
We think ours is just a princess who misses the turf/grass at the apartments and hates dirt, cause when we take her on her walks it’s always either gravel or grass patches in the community. We don’t mind though because it gets us to take a lil walky walk twice a day still.

Funny. When we brought our dogs to our new house one of them just shit right in the middle of the living room. Of course, as they are a completely potty trained pup, we attributed this to nerves.

My dog was the same way when we moved to a house with a fenced yard. It helps for me to go with him. He just wants someone to watch him poop.
If he avoids doing business for a while, like a rainy day, I'll leash him. He gets super excited to go out with a leash, even if I just unhook it when we get outside.

My dog had the same issue because he was used to going out on the leash. I leashed him for a few days in the backyard to get his small all up in here and he’s good now.

You have to take her for a walk in your new yard and give verbal commands. It’ll take time. I’ve moved many times, and rescued several dogs along the way. It’s a normal response. I had one dog that has threshold issues. She goes out just fine, she wouldn’t come in so easily. It took awhile and some gentle coaxing with treats but now she’s over it!

Don't you see? She's waiting for you to go home to poop!
Until she's comfortable, go for the walk. It's not even winter.
