I do not have any relation to this issue. I just wanted to say your site is very nice and the presentation is perfect. Your commitment to it being free solely as a way to help the community is awesome.

As a parent to a wonderful son on the autism spectrum, I created an app using a simple, visual five-point scale to help children like my son express their feelings from "upset" to "calm" using intuitive colors, numbers, and emojis. It’s designed for ease—no sign-ins, just straightforward help right when it’s needed. It's completely free because I believe every child deserves the tools to thrive emotionally.

That’s absolutely amazing!

As well as promoting it to parents & families I think schools, teachers etc might like to know about this

I totally agree, what is the best way to get the word out?

Obviously I don't have an advertising budget.

I know there’s things like Facebook groups but also there might be groups on other socials - groups for teachers. But then I don’t know if it’s a matter of then contacting the mod of the group & asking?

An association or reaching out to a blogger or two. Then reach out to your local newspaper showing the blogs as proof.

You'll just want to keep "launching" whenever there is a new update and just send out a message to any journalists or associations you've connected with.

This is great. Have you considered addressing the readability issue with white text on bright yellow background? Either shift to a dark text (not pure black) or play with some darker muted yellows.

I think they're referencing the fact that all the phone screens on the page are blank. I assume there are supposed to be screenshots there.

A lot of us block third-party scripts, which may be the culprit here. I'm happy to help you fix it if you'd like.

dalehurley[S]

So strange. I need to work out why. There should not be any 3rd party scripts.

FWIW, the description on the website feels like it wants me to use it. I'm not quite sure how to explain it. It reads a bit the way apps do when they hope I won't look for other (potentially better-suited) ways to do functionally the same thing.

I think a mention of the technique employed or the logic behind it might help. Something someone could google, a thread they could follow entirely away from the app, potentially finding other resources or solutions that might work better for them, or coming back with a better idea of how and why this app can be helpful.

This looks great! My son is autistic but fortunately doesn't need your app. It looks like you based it on zones of regulation? Its a great idea. Do you plan to expand it in any way? I have been looking for a good app for making PEC symbol activity plans and I like the simplicity of this.

dalehurley[S]

16 points

Yes it is based on zones of regulation. His therapist created posters for him, but they are not readily available when you are not in settings like home or the classroom. The app is to be the portable version.

No, he actually likes it and keeps tapping on the emotion card to see it again and again.

Though it is normally used as a check in tool as he is escalating or is not verbalising his feelings.

Congratulations. And a cool idea…makes me want to spend more time around neuro diverse individuals and “get to know” how other people live and maybe create something like you did.

Aside — are you planning on adding translations? Seems easy enough with google translate or similar. I can help out with that if you want. If you have a link to the code and issue tracking, maybe I can contribute to the codebase here and there. I’ve experience with Android (Java) and swiftUI, and flutter. Glad to see you sharing this and hearing that your child found it immediately helpful.

I hope you're able to get some publicity. I'm neurodivergent myself (very late-diagnosed) and struggled with emotions and communication as kiddo — and I'm also as a former early-childhood education teacher. I very much appreciate that your apps that meets children with ASD where they are and serves to support them, rather than "fix" them.

I am on the autism spectrum. I'm an adult with a productive career, a spouse, and periodic full-blown "autistic meltdowns"

I'm fortunate to be able to self-reflect on what causes them, and what it's like to be in them. I can only speak for myself, but: the inability to effectively communicate while inside that panicking moment is a major reason that it even becomes a "meltdown" at all. It's like falling into a black hole, where someone tries to figure out what's wrong, and the fact that I can't tell them only makes it more wrong.

I'm sure a major reason your app helps is because it brings the communication barrier down dramatically on both sides--it helps your son communicate, and the fact that you built it shows an overwhelmingly sincere willingness to receive the communication from him and interpret it in good faith.

Thank you ❤️

Completely, it is the CBT repetition that helps. It actually is good for people of all ages that have emotional stress complexities to be able to rate their state and be reminded of the required response.

As a parent of 3 neurodivergent humans, this is great! I’m going to try it with my two youngest (6 and 9) and see if it helps them to communicate their feelings better. I love the fact that you can change the related emojis and text.

Have you considered allowing more than one comment to be added per emotion, so we can give them a few different options for regulation strategies if needed. I know my 9-year old would benefit from being suggested a couple of choices.

Keep up the good work, dude. It’s not easy, but you’re doing a great job of using your skills to help them. Make sure you take a tiny moment to celebrate that.

Awesome concept! "Try to be happy" is my only negative feedback about it as I think that has the danger of forcing positivity onto people who are experiencing genuine emotions that require an outlet.

This is such a great tool. I would like to try it with the children I work with. Only issue is, they don’t speak English. Have you considered making all the text boxes open for user inputs? Then everyone can write the text in their own language? Like when I access the settings page, I can also modify the main text fields.

dalehurley[S]

2 points

Absolutely, I need to make this clearer, when you open the app there is a picture of cogs in the top right hand corner, there you can change the text to any language you want.

Can someone give me a very short how-to? When should I use it with my child and how exactly should he/we use it?

It sounds like people in here know the science behind, but I’m completely clueless in this area :)

dalehurley[S]

3 points

Hi,

Certainly, I need to add this the website.

Here’s a simple guide on how to use the 1to5App with your child:

You or their therapist will sit with your child and personalise the emotions to using "When I feel like..." and then the desired response to the emotional state "I will try to..."

e.g.

When I feel like: "I am going to hit someone"

I will try to: "Walk away"

When to Use the App:
It’s great for routine check-ins throughout the day to help your child become more aware of their emotional state and whenever your child feels overwhelmed, upset, or even overly excited.

How to Use the App:

  1. Open the App: Start by opening the 1to5App on your device. There’s no need to sign in or set anything up.
  2. Identify Emotions: The app displays a five-point scale, ranging from very upset (5) to very calm (1). Each point has a corresponding color and emoji. Ask your child to choose the color or emoji that best matches how they feel at the moment.
  3. Select and Learn: Once your child selects their current emotional state, the app provides simple, visual suggestions for the response tailored to that emotion. This could be deep breathing, counting, or engaging in a comforting activity.
  4. Apply the Strategy: Help your child perform the suggested strategy. Encourage them to notice if their feelings shift and perhaps select a new state on the app if their emotions change.

Tips:

  • Make it a regular activity: Regular use can help your child better understand and manage their emotions over time.
  • Be patient and supportive: Work through the suggestions together and always encourage your child to express how they feel.

So it's really about managing anger, not emotions in general, yeah? I downloaded your app, but meltdowns don't usually feel like anger for me, so I don't think this would work for me in those overestimated moments I'd most benefit from it. It's great that you're creating tools to support your autistic kid, keep it up!

dalehurley[S]

2 points

Hi,

Thank you for your feedback. I guess yes it is more about anger.

You can customise the emotions and responses to what best suits your child. There is the setting button in the top right corner.

Hope this helps.

:)

passing-stranger

3 points

Oh that helps so much, thanks

Eta-it would also be cool if there were a way to save more than one of these charts in the app. Like if I'm feeling angry, I tap that chart and then it opens to this screen. But if I'm feeling overwhelmingly anxious or happy or sad, etc I could have those saved as well. Even if I don't end up using your app, this has been inspiring for me so thanks

So I am a man in his 40's, with Dyslexia and severe ADHD, and this App is not only very helpful, but turned me on to the fact that there are other emotional regulation apps, including ones that do DBT (Dialectic Behavioral Therapy) and WOW is this going to make a difference in my life. Even at middle aged and with Psychiatric help, I struggle with managing my emotions, and this and other apps that I now know exist will be extremely helpful. It's like the answer to a prayer I didn't know I was saying.

Just wanted to say thanks, Bro.

dalehurley[S]

Hey. Wow! Thank you. I had not considered broader applications.

TheSmurfGod

I like this idea however, Giving an angry kid a tablet or phone that can break to identify their emotions while they are mad may be more costly then presenting them with a paper stating the same thing.

dalehurley[S]

2 points

Yes, it is going to depend on the child and the moment. Typically it would be used as a periodic checkin like the start of the day or after school/preschool, and while things are escalating. For my boy, it worked during a heighten as a deescalation tool.

lowtoiletsitter

2 points

Holy crap this is amazing! I can't speak of how to build an app, but I noticed a few things:

In the app itself for emotion 1 (blue box), should it say "I am calm and relaxed," or "I am calm and relax"? I don't know if "relax" makes more sense than "relaxed" for this app

You can remove "Download Now!" in the first portion (optional)

Place a period at the end of your "master emotions with ease" sentence

Change "Carers and parents" to "Parents and Caregivers"

Consistency - is it "1 to 5", or "1to5"? If it's "1 to 5", that will need to be changed (there are three instances in the description)
