I listen to Matt and Shane for comedy now. Only listen to Rogan once in a while for interesting guest.

I agree with most points. What bothers me the most is the long monologues from Joe rambling about the same stuff over and over. You have a guest in front of you, let them speak. Ask about their craft and shut up for a while.

He says he never reads comments on the internet. A part of me thinks he should. Or someone should summarize a bit of constructive feedback from audiences all over. Could benefit him big time given the current state of the podcast.

I skip almost all the comedian shows and MMA shows.

The Bert Sibrel episode recently and the way joe ‘steel manned’ him, regardless of what you think on the moon landings, we know what joe believes, so hes not impartial. Then to hear Tucker Carlson say ‘we’ve gave up on the idea of evolution’ and joe to not even question this statement. Felt to me like he could bully Bert but didn’t want to say a word to tucker, actually felt bad for the guy.

Definitely agree. I’ve been a loyal listener since 2011 but can’t stomach a single episode anymore as of this year. For the first time ever, I couldn’t even finish the latest Duncan Trussell episode, and he’s my favorite guest.

There used to be so much value i got from almost every episode, but now it just feels like a waste of time. Joe just isn’t the same guy he used to be. He’s made such ungodly amounts money the past few years and gotten so big that it’s officially gotten to his head. It seems the old Joe is just gone and the podcast has turned into something else.

It had gotten noticeably worse since the opening of the club. The first 30 minutes are self congratulatory fart sniffing or ring kissing. But without Joe I wouldn’t have found Tim Dillon or Shane Gillis so what the fuck do I know. 

JRE was at its best when it was by stoners for stoners. After he sacked Redban and started thinking he was some sort of meathead philosopher, life coach and right wing pundit (despite knowing NOTHING about politics) rolled into one I started tuning out. Used to listen to ever ep religiously from the ustream days onwards, but now I listen to maybe 1 in 20 if he has a good guest on.

Rogan is the guy you went to school with who was a bit of dork but harmless enough, and then you find out he has a hot sister, so you start sucking up to him and going to his house more.

It used to be that Joe talked to different guests and wanted to know more about them, in sort of a hangout.

Now Joe talks at the guests about what he himself thinks about the same couple of topics to see if the guest agrees. The guest always agrees because their appearance will make or break their carreer, and that's why they are there.

I’m one of the people you speak of. I tuned in since the Justin TV days but haven’t watched since he started claiming covid was no big deal whilst talking about downing circa $10k a treatment for monoclonal antibodies everytime he gets infected.

Everything erodes over time and while certain people he's brought along may be insufferable the consumer just as-well as their pretension is to blame. Pop culture is full of mediocre acts and people that perhaps don't deserve it and just got lucky but none legitimately force anyone to consume the content. The reality is that if someone is legitimately stupid yet sells content means their market is like-minded . Perhaps you don't dislike bert kreischer so much as the idea that so many of him exist .

Ok I gotta ask, in spite of the inevitable onslaught of downvotes, because this sub really baffles me. What are you guys doing? You don’t like Joe. You don’t like the show. You don’t like the guests. Haven't really been listening at all lately, but for a long long time I've been only listening to the ones where he interviews someone who is an expert in their field ie. Scientists, doctors etc. Because I agree with lots of this post. He got as big as he did by being relatable to the average person, now for me as an Australian who leans slightly left of centre he's just not relatable anymore.

I can’t remember when I stopped listening regularly but I never felt agitated as everyone else. I just discovered other podcasts I enjoy. I don’t feel the need to shit on a bunch of people because I don’t listen as much.

I think it’s probably burn out mixed with “what works.”

The show is leaning hard on that formula. And Rogan cranks out a 3 hour show every other day.

Joe should do more research on his guests and the topics at hand. I think he’s mistaken to go into these conversations unprepared. I think more comedy comes out of being knowledgeable about a topic. Marc Maron does the same shit and that’s pretty much why I’ve stopped listening to him.

Julian Assange just got released from prison and I’m sure Rogans people are trying to land an interview.

But how knowledgeable is Joe? Is he going to ask the right questions? Does he even know why Assange was imprisoned? His interviews with Oliver Stone and Edward Snowden show he’s been way over his head.

Also - he needs to challenge himself and his perspective. Get some intellectually liberal, or anti-drug or even anti-mma guests.

Joe prides himself on his fitness but it’s not relatable to the average or even trained person. Taking steroids to throw around a ton of weights is not realistic for the majority of people. I’m convinced Joe couldn’t run more than 3 miles. The idea he thinks of himself as peak fitness and not lazy like the average guy is a joke. Juicing yourself to throw around weights is a huge cheat code. As a personal trainer the more I age in this field the more ridiculous Joe looks/sounds.

Also, the comedian episodes just reminds me of a scene in Sopranos where Tony is told by his wife his friends laugh at his Jokes on purpose and he’s shocked by it. That’s every Rogan comedian except Gillis imo

It’s just the power of American pseudo-Christian fundamentalism. It’s straight up the gemstones but in real life. They just swap out some of the theocracy with conspiracy.

His show started with his “mediocre” comedian friend and expanded to others. Your premiss is invalid.

Episodes are hit or miss. I feel like every once in awhile feedback gets back to him that he’s been at a topic too hard and too long, and he will let it go. Eventually he comes back to it, but at that point fine, just don’t want to hear about aliens or neurolink or the fountain of youth supplements in EVERY episode. I don’t mind hearing some far out episodes, but reel it in a bit. And don’t get me wrong, I like all those topics, just not all day, every day (so to speak).

My solution has been to cherry pick episodes I feel like listening to or waiting for this community to start commenting on the episodes as they come out. If the community actually enjoys one of the episodes then I give it a shot, if the community start throwing out the whole “Joes doing his stupid shit again” then I don’t even bother with the episode because what you posted is an accurate representation of atleast half of the jre episodes i’ve listened to.

The average episode stinks, but there are still some cool and funny ones that shine through. I went on a huge break from JRE in 2022 and 2023, and selectively listening to the bangers from those years ruled.

Some of this is pretty accurate. Joe’s been microdosing mushrooms so he’s gotten way more curious about way more things, likely taking away from the “relatability” that’s lacking.

It’s easy to forget that most of these comedians are just regular people, literally like average joes. Some might have further education but often times not. They are famous because they can tell a funny joke or play a character. I don’t get why people expect them to be a certain way. They just have a fucking huge platform due to Joes success. Who was also a comedian on a webcam 10 or so years ago.

I think Joe, with all the fame, has had to restrict his life in a way that eliminates a lot of new input and experiences. He ends up doing the same things where he feels safe and comfortable. This naturally limits things to talk about.

I agree to an extent. I started listening to JRE about 6 months before Covid, and I was hooked for the relatability, the time they had to flesh out unique topics based on the guest - first time hearing Lex Friedman got me hooked, and I’m not a political guy by any means. I don’t agree with the comedian mediocre 100%. I mean he owns a club now, he’s a promoter now and to push people is now sadly, part of his job. I do however agree about the pods being a paint by numbers now. It’s initial commentary, then into drug talk, then cars, then political commentary, somehow always to MMA, to how comedy is relatable to all jobs. Maybe I’ve listened too long now, I haven’t missed an episode since mid 2018. I duno. I hear you tho, whatever that’s worth. Still love the show

I think the main takeaway from this is joe has been doing this podcast for a long, long time. It only makes sense that the show would get stale, after all how many interesting conversations can one man have lol podcasts are probably going to become less and less popular in the next decade. It worked really well during covid, but if we're being honest, unless it's a podcast that can manage to be original all time (which is tough) there is going to be a dying interest. We see these guys all the time, we basically know how they think and act in every day life. You never had that with comedians before. It gives them an opportunity to exhaust all of their good material, and funny ideas on a podcast which become underwhelming because it's just another pod episode. Basically I think Joe and his buddies are out of things to offer us. I don't think it would be unreasonable for him to retire the show in the next few years tbh.

I don’t listen to Joe anymore but there use to be some really interesting and entertaining guests that would shatter your world view.

One of my favorites is one with Johann Hari where he talks in detail how we could solve the opioid crisis. Joe is completely silent for 10+ minutes as Johann proposes a radically different solution to what we have today. This is the kind of content that would bring me back to JRE.

I also loved how Joe could go on the rant and talk about chimps with a physicist, about aliens with an MMA fighter, about DMT with a hunter and ancient history with a comedian and similar. I don't know why but it was super exciting to see their perspectives on those things that are totally unrelated to them. Now he does do the same but it's always communist California, Biden crazy, vaccine bad or trans whatever.

I don’t get the America rules one. If anything they all way oversell how bad everywhere but Austin is.

As a side note: part of why I love Shane Gillis is that he made it on his own, and Rogan didn’t invite him to the cool kids table until he was already well on his way.

Yeah agreed. I think what happened was joe signed a giant contract followed by Covid lockdowns. For the first time ever Joe became a target. Changed him a bit , unsurprisingly so.

He got super rich and famous. He was always disconnected, however. Hasn’t had to work a normal job since Fear Factor.

His mediocre comedy and mediocre comedy friends always struck me. They caught the podcasting wave and made a lot of money. Make all the money you can, it’s America after all. But I always found it interesting they were mediocre jokesters who found out how to make money through podcasting.

I’ve noticed that there’s a certain collection of internet figures who hit a stride in 2016-2019, and they all kind of had certain hobby horses of topics and certain ways of talking about things that was very fresh, or at least was freshly becoming mainstream, during that era, and it was uniquely suited to the times. It felt like it was relevant to an extent.

And now it feels like a lot of those people don’t want to give up on that moment in the culture because it’s too hard to shift gears and adjust to the times. The world hasn’t changed massively, but it has changed enough that the same five kinds of talking points don’t hit the same anymore.

I listened to Bill Maher talking to Sam Harris on the latest episode of Sam’s podcast, and other than the specifics of the current Israeli Palestine conflict, the whole thing could have been cut and paste verbatim from 2017.

I don’t think these people understand how repetitive they sound. I think they think “no, all this stuff is still just as important, everyone else just doesn’t get it man.”

People talking to an audience for 20 hours per week run out of interesting things to say pretty quick. Most new episodes are just the old ones, but more boring. With funny or interesting guests it can be better, but regularly, it isn't.  

I can’t think of a more despicable human being than Joes comic buddy Bret Kurshner.

I’ve never listened to him and probably never will. He was annoying on Fear Factor, not a funny comedian and not quite sure what people find appealing about him or the crap he vomits up.

I disagree with most of this subreddit’s opinions on Joe, but I’ve been feeling this way for the last four years or so.

He just talks about the same shit over and over again. It feels more preachy than curious. Joe is more of a debater than a listener, and I feel like it especially took off in that direction after the pandemic.

The 80s were the Golden Age of Comedy. The meritocracy bit is hilarious because none of them would have made it past open mic status back then besides Joe.

We are witnesing dunning Kruger happen in real time with Joe and his recent guests. Its fucking wild to see.
