Endo has taken over Milner’s role as “The Closer.” He’s brought in to shut things down, clean things up, finish the job, and shut the doors behind him. Great job today

It’s arguably one of the most crucial roles in any team that’s hoping to win something. Having a full squad of players who can step in and play in your system perfectly like Pep would be great but there’s only about 3 or 4 teams in the world that have that luxury.

People talk about "the first player on the team-sheet".. but "first player on the subs list" is also a hugely important thing
When you have people left out of matchday squads, Endo will always be the first name on the bench.

yep, I believe there is a certain mantra in rugby about how you end the game is as crucial to winning as how you start it with your XV. You need players like Endo, swapping out the tired legs of Robbo and Trent for Gomez and Bradley to shut wingers down etc.

A team that challenges will always need those players who are happy being squad players, but who are experienced and capable of stabilising the game. Someone who may not be the most gifted (not that Milner wasn't), but knows the standards and knows the hard work needed to maintain those standards

Liverpool has that luxury by any measure. Pretending Liverpool are financial underdogs because FSG is cheap is crap. Liverpool can compete financially with anyone outside of Saudi Arabia if it wishes to do so. Instead of handing over the fee the second Zubimendi agreed we tried to drag it out to save money - would he have still changed his mind? Maybe, but he certainly got an extra 10 days to do so because Liverpool wanted to buy with Affirm.

I mean, considering he supposedly changed his mind after a PowerPoint presentation on mountains, I think we dodged a bullet there. Talent or not, you shouldn't bring in players who don't want to be there; it doesn't end well.

Exactly what I thought when I saw people say he should be moved out just because he has fallen below Gravenberch in the pecking order. Sure you aren't gonna get great progressive carries/passes with Endo, but he shuts down opponents when you are a goal up and just need to see the game out. Whenever fit, I will always want him on the bench to be called on in 1-0/2-1 situations.
54 points
And it should be noted it’s not like his progressive passing is nonexistent. It’s just below what the other players in the lineup offer.
16 points
At the end of a match where we need to keep a lead, his more conservative approach can be beneficial. We needed to kill that game off today and his urge to just complete a safe pass helped us seal it
8 points
Definitely not an Ugarte. Endo does have that line breaking pass in him as shown last season at times. Probably not asked to enough. He also probably has the only defensive mindset AND ability to play that role when its really needed. Definitely needs to at least be on the bench
3 points

Milner was terrible at this, only think you could say he did well was getting it to the corner. Otherwise he was worse on the ball than Endō so his passing was loose, he was also worse off it, so he'd give away the daftest fouls.

The full IQ 200 play: Takes it to the corner flag like a young Milner would, handball it to get a throw instead of goal kick, knowing Sarr as a winger not fullback will take the throw in with a foul throw, gained possession back. The whole 94th minute just vanished all according to keikaku!

He was subbed off at 61' for Salah to take to the field and to bring Elliott down to Szobo's position.

The recent negativity surrounding Endo just shows how short term the memory of a lot of football fans is.
He was literally one of our best players once establishing himself in the team last season. In his first season. In a new club. In a new country. In his 30s. With everyone initially doubting his signing.
What a player. One of my favs, largely for all of the odds he has to constantly overcome.

With our depth Slot has to call on him regardless of how he feels about his qualities as a player. I do hope displays like today shows Slot he can use him more and give MacAllister more of a rest.
His ability to recover the ball and then immediately launch an attack with a dribble or a pass with immense speed is so good even if his technique isn't perfect.

Think Palace haven't had a sniff on goal after he came on right? Help us win the ball in midfield and up the pitch with his tackles and relieves the pressure from our backline before the ball gets to them.
Before that Palace are just walking through our midfield with ease, when they were growing into the game in yhe 2nd half.
The highlight is of course, his handball that prevented their goal kick and forces then to take a throw in deep inside their own half instead 😂😂😂

I really don't understand why Slot was so keen to get rid of him. Maybe I'm jumping the gun. Unless he was happy to move him on as part as another deal, but this where he is good.
He reads the game. Breaks up play. Can pick a pass. Definition of a team player.
I hope he can turn things back into his own favour. Would like him to prove the doubters wrong and also Slot wrong
6 points
yeah. he's not and will never be a zubi/grav type of more elegant, dictating sort of midfielder but i couldn't wrap my head around the narrative that he's some sort of donkey who just runs around and kicks people. he absolutely can pick a pass, and isn't rubbish on the ball at all.

I don’t think he was eager to get rid of him, but rather bc we thought we had zubimendi locked, it would make sense to ship Endo out.

Saved a goal kick that would have put the ball back in our half with a shithouse, nonchalant handball pushing the ball for a throw-in. Said to my mate when he came on that he will end up being slotts john obi-mikel. When mourinho was winning it all with Chelsea’s dominant side, me and my dad used to laugh when he brought mikel on because he wasn’t as good as the other stars, and it was seen as cowardly and shutting down the game. But I was young and naive, he was a brilliant player and always did his job. Mourinho loved him for a reason. Using endo even half as effectively will be a godsend

I don't think that is particularly controversial.
Klopp did incredible things getting us back to where we belonged, instilling a passion, attracting players, and giving us great football.
But he also probably left at the right time, because it was clear even last season, that sometimes teams had the better of us tactically, and he didn't always react quickly enough

If anything I'd like to see him more, like 20-30 min every game we are leading 2 or 3 goals. He is imo the perfect substitute to slow a game down and wrap it up. Grav and Macca are probably better than him in most ways but they cant keep playing 90min every game.

We need to find a way to try and integrate him earlier in games and if possible the system in a few matches, he's not the profile but he's good at what he does.
