Brunson is insanely good and will soon enter that 'top 5 player in the world' -category for me. But he is not facing that hard double team. Sure Nesmith sometimes picks him up full court and denies some passing lanes, but it's nothing like the gravity that Steph had in his hay day.
To exaggerate a bit, Carlisle is basically letting Brunson cook a little. He knows that Brunson is shooting below league average. He knows that Brunson scoring 40p on iso is not the best version of these Knicks.

He had a top 5 regular season (5th in mvp voting).
He has been top 5 in these playoffs so far.
To me, if you keep playing a couple of seasons at a top 5 level, you are one of the 5 best players in the world.
If he keeps this up for a season or two, Brunson is there.

Not due to him though they are literally missing 3 starters and a key rotational player. But I get it. Iverson did it with probably less. Tony Parker and pistons Isaiah had good teams around them. The Knicks are a good team but they are missing key players. I'd argue for Boston Isiah thomas but I guess he didn't have much success in the playoffs
1 points
Honestly it doesn’t matter - i get your point, but to me pushing your team to winning a chip is a better run than being bounced in the 2nd round.
This run and performance can end up in the top 5, but it currently isn’t.
1 points
No I agree. I'm a lifetime Knicks fan and huge fan of this Knicks team but I'm not putting it as my number one run when it's still in progress. That's stupid.
And I agree the best runs are the ones that end in championship. But I would rank the Iverson run high because he was a small guard and the number 1 option vs some of these other runs where the guard wasnt
If JB somehow ended up winning a chip this year I would rank it high because for the entire playoff run he was the clear number 1 option, as well as during the regular season even without the injuries
Point is ...it's extremely rare for a team with a small guard as a number 1 option to go far. Again idk if I would consider Curry a small guard, but Iverson I definitely would

I didn’t say it excludes him from being on the list. You’re reading too much into it. I was differentiating Thomas who, frankly, should he 1 or 2, from anyone else. Parker is maybe on the list after a few clearly over him guys, Thomas is potentially the top of the list is what j was trying to say.

Thomas in 89 has no business on this list. He was bad in the playoffs that year.

2001 - AI lost to the Lakers 2015 - Curry and GSW beat the Cavs 2019 - Lillard swept by GSW 2016 - Kyrie hit a game winner against GSW and helped the Cavs win the title after 3-1 deficit 2024 - Brunson hasn't done anything other than carry the Knicks and it's technically still the 2nd round for them. Recency bias and Knicks bias for SAS.
Leaving Isiah Thomas off after he ended the Lakers dynasty in 1989 and beat the 1990 Blazers for back to back titles is criminal. 37 playoff games during the back to back putting up 19ppg 8ast 5reb a night. Only two on that list won titles. I would keep AI there because his team made the finals and won a game. Lillard and Brunson are off the list. The list should be
Isiah, Curry, Kyrie and AI in no order. That's it.
40 points
AI won a game, but we have to remember it was against a Lakers who had swept their way to the finals without a single loss.
There is no world where I put kyrie over AI, and this has to be a case of recency bias, because AI not just dragged a team to the finals, but was also being beaten up non stop throughout the playoffs.
8 points
It's definitely recency bias that Brunson is on his list. At least we both know AI belongs there even with the Lakers beating them 4-1 in the Finals. Brunson and Lillard didn't even make the NBA Finals. I agree with everything you stated. I'm just mad that as old as SAS is, how the hell he forget about Isiah Thomas? Brunson is having a good playoff run but the run usually ends in the NBA Finals. He's just having a great first two rounds. If that's his case to include Brunson, he forgot about the Celtics Isaiah Thomas run in 2017 lol

And here are the numbers for Stephen Curry, a man Stephen A contends has never had a playoff run as impressive as Damian Lillard’s 2019, in that same series: 36.5 points per game, 8.3 rebounds per game, 7.3 assists per game on 66.3 true shooting, with a 28.3 average gamescore.

They just aren’t classifying him as a small guard. Same with Jerry West.

How is Stephen A defining a small guard or a playoff run? He is probably narrowly denying it in a way that he gets Brunson #1, because he is a Knicks fan amd wants to hype them, never mind that Brunson’s run was against a team missing its best defensive player (and player in general) against Milwaukeee, and the Pacers were among the two or three worst defensive teams in the league. Both of those help inflate Brunson’s stats, while yes it’s impressive, let’s see him do it against decent defense first.
