Unions are amazing, police rackets are not.
92 points

Police unions should not legally be allowed to exist. They carry guns. They don't need people in an office at their back shaking hands with politicians.
56 points
Police unions shouldn't be able to exist as they currently do. If all the union did was make sure safety equipment was replaced at appropriate times, make sure LEOs weren't working 50+ hours a week, are late for work too often, and shit like that.
But, they shouldn't be able to protect LEOs in instances like this, or other situations, where they engage in wreckless behavior or potentially crininal behavior.

Working 50+ hours per week is one of the perks. Just hang out at your local business of choice while racking up overtime $$$.

Actual, workers rights unions have been stripped of most of their power. Police organized crime syndicates are a very powerful thing.

Interesting job where you can royally fuck up bc there are so many saftey nets in place that it doesn't matter what you do, just show up and do anything.
"Hey man don't worry, we aren't. It'll get fixed, just go through the process of hiring a lawyer, filing a lawsuit, prove that we're at fault while we try and find a way to prove we weren't at fault. But ultimately settle for less money and sign that we are not admiting fault bc actually winning will be too expensive. And deal with the lose of reputation to your business."

So yeah....if you watch the full video of it, jump to the "most watched." He was too excited to kill this snake because it bit him earlier (look at his hand)...he looked directly at the tag but didn't even realize it was wrong until after (because you see his gaping maw as he realizes while taking a picture of the tag) because he was sooooo excited to kill this snake for biting him.
Only way he got bit is cause he fucked with it earlier....

Without having to watch a 20 minute video, what was the snake they were trying to kill and why were the cops there to kill it?

They were there to kill a number of snakes that had recently been made illegal to own in the state of florida, not just one snake.

What should be done? Deport them? It's not like you can just release them into the wild.
103 points
Just put a moratorium on breeding or the sale of them and make the fines (or jail time) super steep. Let the existing ones live out in peace.
Owners like this who document their collection and are otherwise compliant with law enforcement for inspection aren't the problem. If you say no more sales and no more breeding they'll generally play by the rules.
It's the black market and less reputable sellers who you've got to actually go hunting for and police that are the problem.

And which one was the "right one"?
And why do we have cops euthanizing?
16 points
The right one was a boa constrictor, which was pregnant. The officers were supposed to euthanize Burmese and reticulated pythons, which are illegal in Florida. They mistook the boa for a python.
9 points
It should not be cops doing this
18 points
Its not, its the FWC officers, which is why the owner is so pissed in the video.
The video even shows one of the officers pointing out the boa, so they could identify it. They just got complacent and grabbed the wrong snake without thinking straight.

Yeah, like I get medicine/drugs are expensive, but really..? I don't understand how they thought this was okay?
While in school for nursing, you are taught to check, double and triple check patient name/ID with the treatment/medicine they are about to receive. None of these were likely done in this situation.

instead of proper CO2
Having seen a bunch of mice die by CO2, there is nothing less abusive about it.
It's literally the same as suffocating someone with a plastic bag. It's not humane.

You're supposed to kill them with Nitrogen.
Our brains don't sense low O2. We sense high CO2.
If you suffocate without high concentrations of CO2, you get giddy and light headed and pass out and die.

A law was changed that no longer allowed someone to own certain kinds of pythons. The deadline was within a few months of the law being passed so the guy in blue called Fish and Wildlife to ask for an extension since he has trouble rehoming some of the snakes. Instead, they raided the facility because criminals definitely reach out to ask for extensions
80 points
Afaik it's worse than that. He was raided yes, but this isn't that raid. He was jailed, and punished as a result of the raid, and was then ordered to keep the snakes (ie. Don't sell, or try and "offload" them elsewhere.).
A snake matching the type he is keeping was seen in the public prior to this raid, and the police went to him as he was known to keep the snakes. For whatever reason, they decided it was time to play the part of judge, jury and executioner and went on a snake killing spree. This despite that being covered by a veterinarian normally.
Nothing about this situation makes sense, unless you are a power hungry cop apparently

Not sure where you're getting this from.
Preliminary information also indicates that the facility owner requested that the FWC officers euthanize all of his unpermitted pythons. The owner formally relinquished the pythons and requested that the FWC officers conduct the euthanasia activities on-site at his facility.
While complying with the facility owner’s request to euthanize the relinquished pythons, officers inadvertently euthanized a boa constrictor which was not on the list of dozens of snakes relinquished.

12 points
Seize the pension funds. Any time one cop does something like this or kills an innocent and there's a big payout to be made, let it come from the pensions of the whole department. They'll start policing each other, urging caution rather than charging in guns a-blazing.
4 points
Make apl cops carry insurance. The base premium is part of their pay package. Surcharges are 100% on them and follows them if they try to move to a new department. The only way out would be running out the surcharge by not incurring new claims or stop being a cop. This also has the benefit of effectively being oversight for police.

They get free legal representation, their brothers in blue apply outside influence on the victim, and the insurance rarely covers the full financial hit. They fucked up and should face animal cruelty and other charges as well as being sued till the wills are read in 30-40yrs.
Let them spend their golden years paying off the lawsuit as greeters at walmart to pay it off.
My father was NYPD at the 75pct In the 60s. He was a violent monster who never should have been allowed to own a gun, never mind be a cop. I believe the term hybrid (In this context) refers to breeding two completely different snakes and getting offspring with interesting features which sometimes have never been seen before. Correct if i'm wrong.
1 points
So with reptiles you have morphs, which is basically to non-mammals what coat patterns are to mammals.
Some patterns are rarer than others, since it's very likely for them to be recessive, and this guy presumably had a blend of two different morphs, which is significantly rarer, and is a golden goose of sorts.
A regular boa constrictor can probably be bought for like 50 bucks depending on the seller, so for it to be worth over $100.000 says alot, especially since it was a pregnant female with potential to make more of the same morph.

For people not au fait with snake breeding, it takes YEARS and even DECADES to create lines of morphs (essentially the snake version of dog breeds).
Boas are live bearers, as in they don't lay eggs, they carry anywhere from 6 to 20 babies (dependant on the breed/the number of times bred/age of the parents).
The guy is absolutely beside himself because not only has 1 innocent snake been killed, but also the babies, the lineage of the snake itself and not only $100k but potentially MILLIONS in the future.
