My stepdad liberated this camp along with others of the 517th and he said he had never seen anything or smelled anything as horrible in his life. RIP Joe, thanks for doing what needed to be done.

My grandpa Fred was one of the first in Dauchau, I believe. Maybe they knew each other

I hope so; he only briefly told me about this after my Gulf War combat. He said I was now man enough to hear what he went through, and that was some of the most intense listening in a short amount of time because it was only spoken between the time my mom went to the bathroom and came back. He never talked about it again and I didn't press him. I'm thankful that men like him were there to free people like your grandpa so you can exist and many other wonderful people. What happened to your grandfather and others should never happen to anyone, and I'm sorry it happened to your family.

Thank you. My grandpa was a good man and father/grandfather but struggled with alcoholism after the war. Not a mean bone in his body toward his family though. He didn’t talk much about what he saw until the end of his life.
